freeshop was outdated even when everyone was using it, because it was an eshop(official) alternative. Basically, it was used by the scrubs that only learned the bare minimum about 3ds hacking to get their free titles.
Freeshop is a homebrew app that imitates the eshop, but doesn't show you games that aren't cached on their servers.
It also doesn't allow you to queue multiple title downloads in sleep mode afaik.
The not-retarded-tier method was to generate tickets (with shameless.exe), install those tickets, so you could send GET request directly to nintendo's servers and download any title from their e-shop regardless of whether you previously owned them, because they never bothered to create user-specific/console-specific certs. The games you own tickets for will just offer you to download them """"again"""".
They now did though, because they are all of a sudden paranoid about piracy. But it's far too late at this point, where pretty much every game has been dumped as a .cia, you just have to download them before nintendo starts throwing around more lawsuits against these databases. Basically playing internet whack-a-mole and wasting shitloads of money that they should have spent developing games for the switch that aren't just ripped directly from the wii-U with tiny extras. You know. If they want to save their failing business model.
BTW, hilariously, the nintendo switch has a similar model, but nothing has been fixed there. People are still downloading from the CDN to this day.
But, like I said. Too little, too late. This isn't going to stop the piracy, just make it slightly more difficult than stealing candy from kids.
