Its not that we don't get it and don't think it looks nice, and it's not just because you guys mostly act like pretensious cunts about it, like that, it's that we know the value of money and know for a fact that anyone who pays 100,000,000 million dollars for a painting is being scammed or is going to use it to scam other people.
5b68c6 No.2168385
>>2168384
But that's just it, it's not a scam. You don't get it, so you don't see the value in it. And that's the problem. People who don't see the value in the arts drag society down. You want to focus all your time and attention on trying to make life better or more comfortable, or try to make scientific advances, but without things like art and philosophy society would be cold and harsh, Darwinian as it were.

Oh what a load of fucking horse crap, you're completely fabricating whatever conversation you want to have with yourself without acknowledging what I am actually saying, art can exist and be appreciated without a ridiculously high price tag, which normally only accrues after the piece has successfully survived several decades of history and the death of the painter.
We can advance in both science and artistically without things being ridiculously expensive for no real reason, and with comparatively little effort.
5b68c6 No.2168387
>>2168386
It does exist without an incredibly high price tag, it's called a museum. But when private individuals want to own works of art that are intended for being seen by thousands, it costs money. And when people start paying that kind of money, that dives up the prices even more. It's not a scam, it's economics. The demand is high, the supply is limited, so the prices can be set at a seemingly ridiculous level and still be paid for. Furthermore, a work of art is not a one time expenditure. Art requires upkeep, regular cleaning, special lighting and environmental factors, some of it needs to be restretched, some of it has rot happening to the material that needs to be treated to slow it down, etc. Art is a very very expensive thing. Even on the front end, the making of it, materials are expensive as hell and painting is rather labor intensive, sculpture and printmaking even more so. The reason you see the prices on work skyrocket after a painter dies is because that painter is no longer producing work, so their supply is now cut off. What there is is what there is and that's all there ever will be, which drives the prices even higher. But Diebenkorn, the painter I said was worth 100,000,000 dollars, was selling for millions of dollars in his lifetime. Gerhard Richter, a German painter who is still alive and working, sells for millions upon millions of dollars for a single painting. And no, without a return to the caves, art will always remain expensive because of the cost of creation and upkeep.

And yes, his paintings are worth millions of dollars, I myself would pay millions of dollars for a Rothko painting if I had that kind of money. There are no regular services of any kind held in the chapel as the building is completely nondenominational. Oh, I absolutely agree, things are only worth what people are willing to pay. However, that applies to everything beyond art. It costs a couple dollars to make the new iPhone, yet they are charging a grand a piece for it. There are some people who purchase art as an investment, but there are some that purchase art because they like it. There are even some that purchase art because they like it, but who intend to sell it to purchase different art that they also like.

I'm not saying anything negative at all. I was just stating a fact.
My entire thing is perspective though. $15 Million is equivalent to 300 salaried median income workers. Assuming full time hours and no overtime that's basically being valued at well over 500 thousand man hours of skilled labor. I don't think the painting is worth that personally.
I'm a collector in comics, so trust me I completely understand placing a lot of value into something that by all metrics should be mostly meaningless.
Yeah my signed stan lee number 1 X-Men comic in near mint condition is worth well over 10K right now, but for all I know it may be worth bupkiss in a decade from now. All of these massive over inflated prices just boils down to people with too much money spending on status symbols of wealth.

But not always. And I'd say it's worth 15,000,000 because someone purchased it for that much. Which is how the market works. Once someone pays a price for a work of art, it very very rarely ever is that price or lower than that price again. And it typically drives all the other prices for that same artist up even higher. It's not always a status symbol. I wouldn't buy a painting to show off. I would buy a painting because it connected to me on an emotional or intellectual level.
