So I tend to gravitate towards specific writers that pull me in, in a more substantial way than just "here's some cool peeps with superpowers winning the day and being painfully predictable".
Unfortunately I've been neglecting to even seek out stuff I think I will like over the past few years, I need to get back into that stuff as it is creatively stimulating.

My style came about because of laziness; I drew comics because it was quick and I didn't really care about the art quality when I started out.
My only goal was to draw characters that could be expressive enough to go with the stories I wrote, so I didn't do very much research early on into anatomy and form as much as I should have.
Of course, I later fleshed my characters out, but my roots are in 'funny', simple comics.
Even still, I don't like spending a lot of time working on one thing; I like to just get it done quickly and say 'good enough'.
dfddc7 No.2088140

I've been looking at a lot of tutorials and stuff and they really help? the anatomy is a real challenge and so far I haven't drawn anything very expressive or like not-static?

2b7fa6 No.2088143

yeah, anatomy stuff helps a lot so that you understand skeletal/muscular structures, so when you apply it to even more 'cartoony' stuff, you just have an innate sense of proportion and mechanics rather than drawing things based only on your 'perception' of them; which is why there is so much terrible fan art on the internet, people try to copy styles too much without having a literal backbone of knowledge on how human characters should look.

One of the biggest influences on my style (outside from anime) was growing up reading Calvin & Hobbes, and I loved how loose and vibrant that world was - compared to how stale all othe other comics were in the newspaper.
I admired that concept so much that I kept my own comics loose and sketchy and explored my own horizons within four panels, rather than limiting myself to repetitively draw the same flat, 2-dimensional characters over and over.
37ca82 No.2088158
>>2088154
I did the same but with boys as well. Pre-puberty I was trying to draw hyper realistic animals and landscapes. I envied everyone I saw with talent in cartoons because I thought it was way cooler lol.
At this point, I can either take a lot of time and create shit like space-scapes that look really neat, or I can take less time and create silly cartoon things. I think I am just really disorganized in and amongst myself, which makes it difficult to set my mind to creating shit I consider valuable in any way shape or form. Maybe it is because my artistic dreams were belittled all the time lol..? idfk. I just get frustrated with myself, that is my biggest problem.
2b7fa6 No.2088159

I was always compared to the 'better' artists in my schools, who were super good at realistic stuff.
I knew I had no hopes of pulling that off, and I didn't try. Cartoons were more fun, and my interest was kept by doing one panel at a time and progressing the stories.. I wouldn't even realize I'd be working 1-2 hours on a single page, because I'd have been breaking the work down panel by panel.

I felt so defeated, I have ripped, torn, and destroyed almost all of my creations out of some repressed rage I have towards my passions. It's so stupid lol, I just need to get over it. I think I will.

Yeah, I literally burnt my whole past prior to 2010 except for whatever I had scanned and my binder of finished comics.
I had a big box FULL of paper going more than a decade back, and I didn't need to take it with me when I moved across the country so I dragged it out into the forest and poured lighter fluid over it, had a drink to toast it.
Likewise, I didn't get any recognition from teachers and there were many other better 'artists' in our large school. In fact, any time there was a contest, the other guy would win every time.
But, I was confident enough in my own comics that I would photocopy them and sell them for $1 each, and find that people I didn't know or talk to would come up and buy a copy cause they'd seen their friend reading one, and I rolled out six issues in four years.

close. I mean, the Betty Edwards puts it better than I probably could.
but it sorta wakes you up to the fact that you go through life ascribing meaning and giving labels to things automatically. the regions of the brain responsible for language and symbol processing, are located on the left side.
if you've never been taught otherwise, or you don't look at the objective visuals of things as part of your life, you likely interpret the world through symbols. and if you tried to draw something from imagination, you'd probably try to draw the symbol of the thing, and what you sorta know it looks like, and probably wind up with some disappointing vague looking thing, that doesn't quite look like how you know it should.
this book seeks to remedy that. it talks about the process of thinking, what you might feel, the excitement or pride that you might have upon succeeding at something you never thought you could do.
I'm assuming that's why loco and so many others reccomend it as a first step.
