I don't know how the Canadian system works, so I can't make a comparison between the two without having to look it up on the spot.
I'm not saying the the country is a hivemind, but many people vote party line due to the issue that they see the parties taking up. Even most of the people who call themselves "independent" will actually favor one big party over the other because the fear of wasted votes.
As I said it's very polarizing.
Also the Latino vote isn't considered left just because they have a 55% favoring of the democrats, but because there is only between 10-15% that favor republicans. Whenever it actually comes to voting what you see is a Landslide vote for a lot of minority groups in one way or another. The biggest examples I can think of being the Blacks and Latinos.
