it's not that I don't know how to drive, I just hadn't driven.

I'd been on highways in the passenger seat before, and understood the preferred look and feel of going at 100km/h. the day before yesterday was my fifth time actually starting the car.

is it really so ridiculous to compare driving to Hanzoing? both rely on judging visiospatial differences and thinking ahead. the rest of the time, it's about ignoring all distractions, and matching the flow.

if you really think about it, the idea of hundreds of thousands of humans in metal bricks propelling themselves at lethal speeds along surfaces every day without incident is absurd. clearly there some dependable, shared, intuitive simplicty that doesn't entail having driven every variation of every road ever in order to know what to do, and since I'm probably not going to draw on long-term memories over a single highway, my brain will obviously be using a lot of the same apparatus it used for becoming a 3000SR Hanzo.

also, road systems are all about predictability and symbol recognition, which satisfies my 'tism immensely. how you choose to trace your arc (and car movement is all about tracing arcs) requires an awareness on where things will be, as where they are, then coordinating intention with movement. simple geometry, really.

hm... other ways driving a car is like playing Hanzo, is the anthropomorphic nature of most road vehices. Hanzo becomes ōkami (狼) as he dons the exterior of the wolf, similarly, one becomes car as they don its exterior, and to become one with, to perceive and make actions relative to the external thing, especially when that thing is something you have a high degree of control over, seems natural and appropriate.

it's not like I had to think any of this while driving. I just knew it was about responding to visual cues and thinking ahead.

There's always a risk, but holy shit, I knew what to do. I remained calm and focused, relaxed even. I drove in the slow lane, essentially along a straight line. unless the laws of physics broke and everyone around me went insane, I was going to be fine.
