This. He also had a warped view on how humans think and socialize. It's somehow uncanny considering that he understood the Alpha-Beta-Gamma dynamics of animal relationship yet failed to understand ulterior motives of humans he meets in everyday life.

I think if muhsoggyknees was his whole issue then he would have no problem getting along with the Alpha guy and his 3 friends, but he didn't. He also scorned the hierarchical relationship built around the Alpha guy, who attracts Beta teenagers to himself. He wrote an essay saying that he intended to be a lone, independent bear i.e. Gamma. On the other hand this essay might have been merely a lingering manifestation of Chuunibyou he lost before the story began.

He getting along with Iori is indeed could seem like a rather out-of-character personality development, but I can only attest that it isn't actually weird. Similar minds attract each other IRL. He was a teenager who had little experience of getting along with other people and arrived to conclusions too quickly.

If there's one thing H8man has been doing right in the whole course of his life, it's him being quite selective in choosing friends. Many Betas IRL simply befriend each other and give their respect (a.k.a Asslicking) to Alphas simply to coax help one-sided-ly and mutual reassurances that they're in good company, not because they want to establish a mutually beneficial relationship where everyone helps each other regularly.

anyway, here's the LNs in english. the novels go in more depth with hikigaya's inner monologues and stuff. it's actually alot funnier than the show in certain places.

I didn't finish the series because the first episode alone was absolute garbage but just so I know for sure: is this another one of these shows where the MC is a socially awkward autist with zero positive personality traits yet all the girls end up wanting to fucking him anyway? Something akin to Re;Zero. Because that's what it seems like to someone who hasn't seen the show.

It devolves into haremshit, but it's not the kind of haremshit where there isn't any reason to like MC. He's relatively intelligent and fixes problems that other people can't fix, but he does it by socially sacrificing himself in the process.
