 No.38404

Discuss fantasy anime and manga. There hasn't been a series that peaked my interest like Slayers and Dragon Half. I recommend watching Slayers and reading the Dragon Half manga.

 No.38408

Dragon Half and Slayers seem to be a similar flavor. Be nice if there were more fantasy anime like them, anime that isn't isekai.

 No.38411

The first 15 episodes of Sword Art Online are a pretty good representation of a tabletop RPG made into a MMO. Especially the unique skills aspect. It's what got me interested in the games which then turned out to be shitty dating sims and destroyed the most interesting boss fight right in the tutorial when the skull reaper was wailed on by you all but solo.

Dragon Half only had an OVA, but the manga is really fun. I also think Dragon Half and Slayers share a similar vibe, I just can't put my finger on it.

Well modern fantasy has utterly tanked in the west. It's tried to banter to trannies and literal autists instead of just making cool stuff. WOTC are funding gay pride parades and shit.

There's really no where this can go unless the industry collapses and there's a fresh fantasy movement. Japan has managed to preserve a little of the tradition with Dark souls but that's pretty niche (not the game popularity) and doesn't really do much with the concept outside of the usual stuff.

Lots of animes like Black Clover have tried to dig into fantasy as a setting but they take too much focus away from the world it's self. You would think people might take the hint from Tolkien where the world was much bigger than the characters were.

How were the modern Slayers OAVs?

 No.38421

Why do I hear some people use the phrase OAV and others use the phrase OVA?

Heterogeneous Linguistics

>A linguist travels among the world of monsters, learning how each species communicates.

This one's good. It's something different. It's fun to try to puzzle out what's causing the various difficulties in communication before the causes get revealed later, and the worldbuilding is quite decent.

My beef with tolkeinism is that it's not all that fantastic–it's 90% realistic medieval warfare fanfiction with a scant few otherworldly elements. I mean fuck, if the only distinct physical characteristic separating your good guy races is height then you have problems.

On that note, anyone got any Conan-esque series or one-shots they'd recommend? I watched Amon saga earlier and it hit most of the sword and sorcery high notes for me.

Any of you up for a /comfy/ romp through a medieval/fantasy countryside with Ryuutama? (may or may not end in starvation and/or freezing to death, it's my first time running this system)

Plan would be to start the game this Saturday(09/15), somewhere between 1000 and 2000 UTC, and go for about 2-3 hours, if everything goes right.

We'd be creating the characters then, too.

I'll use MapTool with VoIP in tox, probably.

You don't have to have a microphone if you don't want it. I'll use it due to it being far easier to improvise that way.
