Can /animu/ explain why Gintama is so highly praised?

Various Gintama seasons are always taking a bunch of top spots on MAL and pretty much everybody seems to think this is one of the best Mongolian slideshows ever, but I've been trying to watch it (streamed 60 episodes thus far) and it's honestly pretty meh.

It's kinda boring when it gets serious and the humor is all just references and puns, like some kind of Japanese Freakazoid.

I love the character designs though.

As expected westerners can't into Gintama. I personally like it because the author took his time to establish each character to the point you genuinely care about them. None of the gag episode can be considered filler as they tell more about each characters personality.

I also enjoy the serious arcs because it's not centered around "x villian is level 99, mc is level 30. How can he beat him?" but rather the

conflict of the entire arc. I realize that all the points I made are very generic but that's what I think about Gintama.

It's sort of like the early seasons of The Simpsons.

>great voice acting talent

>mostly episodic format with moralistic undertones full of family values

>crude humour

>pop culture references every now and then

>lots of in-jokes for loyal fans

The author has a quirky way with writing too. For example, most of the episode/chapter titles are just life advice the author makes up.

Gintama is a pretty generic shounen comedy, funny only to its targeted demographic of 13 yo boys. The reason it's so highly praised is the same reason other generic shounen are praised - normalfags who do't know better and have no taste anyway.
