Rather, I think it's the flow of the story and writing that make this bullshit so egregious, especially if it's your first rodeo. You're given a genuine (loli) harem story, with volume after volume of loli goodness and tons of fanservice (and not just of the titillating kind), only for an incredibly sudden reversal as you're then bludgeoned over the head with the old hag option last minute. It's as if the author is mocking you, providing exactly what he knows the fans desire, only to spit in your face last second with a bait and switch.
That investment and subsequent disappointment is what truly pisses people off. It's not solely that the old hags always win. If the old hags were an actual contender from the getgo, then there wouldn't be nearly as much problem.
