yes, they don't shy away from subjects like you'll get in (((modern))) media such as is an authoritarian dictatorship a better form of government than "democracy" (actually a republic). They also do a good job of showing each character's motivations and ambitions. Julian is shit and so is Schenkopp. pretty sure you'll find it hard to like Yang more than Reinhard thus casting everything in a "why is Yang such a little shit, why don't they just roll over and die for mein Kaiser" light which makes roughly 40% of the episodes painfully boring.

the remaster I assume you mean is the one airing now has better looking fight scenes but obviously its still airing and I have no idea if they plan to adapt the whole 100 or so episodes of the OVA but so far they've been 1:1 with the original. the old one has more nuance to the animation I guess - the men look more masculine and you can see the age on their faces. the fight scenes are kind of samey in the old ones and not particularly visually stunning barring one fight in particular.

It makes more sense to watch after you've more or less figured out your politics. Strictly as a court intrigue for both sides it's kind of boring. Same with having it only as the battles in a vacuum - they are pretty boring and the imagery isn't spectacular. But once you get invested in a side it starts becoming more enjoyable.

every democratic politician votes to go to war so they can stay in power and the ones who didn't vote were portrayed as weak and lost their positions. they alliance government was rife with corruption and scandal; on the other hand the empire government was at worst filled with inequality inb4 and ineptitude due to hereditary leadership instead of meritocratic but the view we get from Reinhard fixes both of those problems and then we're just left with Reinhard's unwarranted smugness vs the Alliance's failing government.

Probably the best anime of all time. It doesn't get too flashy but the storytelling and pacing are the best i've watched. Watch the original series, then the Gaiden series.

So is the current year rehash any good? I watched one episode but didn't like it as much as the original other than the 3DCG space battles perhaps being a bit more engaging to watch.

I suppose in the first part of LoGH we saw the alliance die due to the above failures, in the second half (pretty much the end) we saw the empire die since it depends so heavily on one man's vision, benevolence and ambition
