I just watched Haibane Renmei on a recommendation of an anon that it was similar in feeling to Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryoko. Though that wasn't the case (I actually found it close in feeling to Kino no Tabi) I still really enjoyed it.
I thought it was a very nice tale that told the story it wanted to tell, I liked that it didn't get bogged down in filler while not feeling rushed either. I also really liked that although the main character was Rakka, the story itself really was about Reki. You don't see that very often where the main character isn't exactly the character that the story is about. Obviously the story largely revolved around Rakka but at the same time her arc ended quite early while Reki's developed over the course of the whole series.
The one thing I didn't like was that there wasn't more world building. I understand that the writer didn't want to pollute his very personal story with a bunch of grand worldbuilding and lore but I still want to know other stuff.
Like what are the walls? Who are the Haibane? Are they people who died? What's outside of the walls? Who are the Tolga? Do the Haibane have an identity which existed before they became Haibane
I really would have liked more hints dropped throughout the series. Maybe even a little peek at what happens to the Haibane who take their last flght and go outside of the walls.
Overall it was good though I really liked it. So lets discuss it, what do you guys think?
