That was only part of it but yeah, it was called the Endless Eight, the arc was about the characters being stuck in a timeloop and the eight episodes were all exactly the same plotwise with only a few minor changes in clothing, animation and bits of dialogue.

It pissed a lot of people off when it was airing and the director of the first season even formally apologized for it but I personally liked it (didn't watch it when it first aired though) because it makes you sympathise more with both the characters in the second season and especially Nagato in the movie.

Sadly Japs aren't into open world games or games that generally give you a lot of freedom regarding the choices you make, linear games are much more popular there, probably because of their very limited free time.

The whole idea of high school clubs sounds horrible to me. Why would I want to stay in school even longer? I just want to go home and play video games.

Japanese high schools seem kinda fun with all the quirky clubs they have. But that just may be an anime thing

Teachers don't meddle a lot in club affairs so it's really just a place for students to have fun with each other without the interference of either parents or teachers. Japs also don't have a lot of free time anyway so they probably don't care.

Oh and there are some schools of theirs where you are forced to join a club because of rules.

It is, I remember one scene in the second season I think made me chuckle when Rias tells Issei that she'd told the school that they were going away for a to play a match or something like that, when they were actually in the underworld fucking about.

The occult club in Kotoura-san actually did more studying of the paranormal.

Besides, the point of clubs is to have fun together while learning to teambuild and organize by yourself. It's a pretty good concept.

And of course you'll forever be branded an antisocial weirdo if you refuse to join a club, same as if you don't go for a beer with your colleagues after work.
