Has there ever been a Western style sci-fi anime similar to Star Trek or Babylon 5? A cast of characters traveling around, visiting different worlds, meeting different alien races, intervening in all kinds of struggles. I think that would be cool.

Lolis run a church in a fantasy world. The main girls would be nuns but other characters would include an ara priestess that the nuns constantly have to stop from sexually harassing the alter girls and the goddess and her angels who occasionally appears to help the girls with their problems.

Actually, I think I just want a SoL show following a bunch of cute lolis living on a Culture Orbital, interacting with the other inhabitants (both human and non-human), and exploring all the artificial ecosystems and structures. The background artists could go wild and it could be a really comfy show if it was done right.

It's not a crew on a scientific mission to chart star systems, but nothing summarizes Dirty Pair more.

Just give me a shitty comedy isekai where a bunch of Yakuza wake up in a fantasy world and then start a bandit gang.

A salaryman with severe depression who's lost any lust of life is given powers to fight an invading Allen force, toku style, but it's only activated when he feels his old childlike passion for cool things he used to have. Enough passion summons a giant robot he pilots.

Most of the time he can't access his abilities due to stress and losing interest in life, but he always channels his passion at the last moment.

The villain wants to destroy Tokyo because of Akihabara holding vast potential passion-energy.

The salaryman in the end rekindles his Love for cool things and leads an army of otaku into space to save a world that always shunned them and treated them like dirt, not because they care for the normalfags, but just because it's the cool thing to do.

I disagree. I think it's very much like Star Trek TOS.

There are two kinds of Dirty Pair episodes. One is true hard sci-fi. In the first episode, they have to deal with a rogue AI similar to VGer in the first Trek movie or Hal in 2001.

The other type of Dirty Pair episode is along the lines of those campy TOS episodes where the crew deals with native issues like the Wild West episode.

There's a lot more action in Dirty Pair, but it's very similar and takes a lot of inspiration from TOS.

You may be thinking more of Babylon 5 or Next Gen, but don't forget just how silly TOS really was.

As always, it is he who has the largest financial stake who decides what kind of anime gets produced. It's also worth noting that Kadokawa, besides their large stake in anime, owns almost the entire LN industry, so if you ever wonder why there are so many more LN adaptations now than there were 10 or 20 years ago, there's your answer.

That was an interview with Okada at a Western con in 1996. This is from the same interview:

I think the idea has since left his head due to his own success killing his dreams, and his frustration has come out in the Rebuilds. Remember the studios want to make good anime. It's the producers and companies that fund everything who make the important decisions that can either make or break everything.

At another point in the interview, Okada said this:

So, I think, the responsibility was not with Gainax. People say, "It's the responsibility of Mr. Anno," but they're wrong. Control over schedule is the responsibility of the producer. But Tatsunoko and T.V. Tokyo couldn't handle it. It was out of Gainax's control.
