I'd like to take this moment and say that beam weapons are the worst addition to gundam and I am happy no other timeline uses them. They are overpowered and makes for huge plotholes like why Zeon doesn't make their own beam weaponry after being raped by them.

What? Have you turned off your brain for the 30% of the show being reused scenes? Or low quality stuff?

See, there were some really well done, verily, but the show since the beginning was plagued with short budget and lack of commitment.

They just wanted to pull a Gundam anime fast to fill the void after Wing and before a "real deal" (which was Turn A).

Gundam X was cool, had immense potential, but mismanagement crippled it.

Danguard Ace has colony drops, autistic cyber-newtypes which make perfect soldiers (but can't deal with emotions), dummy balloons, the captain punching the hero to correct his attitude, a fanatical masked ace pilot, as well as robots being only a single part of a military force. In this show, humanity is divided in two equally scummy camps that attempt to justify every drop of blood they spill with impressive rhetoric.

The thing is that isn't unusual for a Gundam series at all, and most of the reused footage is quite good, like that shot of Garrod jumping into the cockpit which I think is used about three times. The recent BD really helps things look nicer, I recommend checking it out. The soundtrack is great too. Especially the latter half of this track.

I don't think anything can top my love for the original.

What do you think of the campier kid's mecha anime? From what little I've seen I like the stuff. It's really relaxing and fun.

Zeta's very good, but it does feel less solid overall. 79 Gundam has this organic feel to it where everything makes sense in the internal logic of the universe. Why are there comic relief child characters on-board the ship? Because they're war orphan refugees who board the ship during the panic of an attack on their colony, and then are begrudgingly allowed to stay on-board because they'd have nowhere else to go, and the crew has become the closest thing they have to family. It's kind of cheesy, but you see the logic there. The equivalent characters in Zeta just show up half way through the show, presumably because someone in marketing wanted them there, and then that's that. Zeta is full of things like that. Stuff just happens. You can see the conversation playing out in your head.

>hey, we need a thing like that thing from the original show

>okay, poof, there it is

I'm not that guy, but I'd like to say that, in my experience, after you learn about real economics, history, politics, geography, language, culture, etc, these shows start getting really clumsy and fake, pretentious even.

Then, the more serious it gets, and the more serious it takes itself, the more you can see how shallow the people behind think and create, because they really think they're doing something deep, when they have no self awareness of their own lack of understand of everything, basically.

It's not a case of being childish or grown up. The original show is quite childish, but it feels more consistent than Zeta. It's more just about telling a childish story well, or telling it in a clunky manner.

Compare how Char is introduced in episode 1 (maybe 2), and then developed over the course of the show, to how Scirocco just shows up about a quarter of the way into the show, as if they forgot to include a charismatic villain, and then tried to shoehorn one in.

If anything, your post comes off as quite pretentious.
