Despite missing the VCR lines, I would actually rate the shaft OVA on par with the original series. The other OVA was nice for the glimpse into how Kino became who he (female) is, but on it's own it was rather weak.

I couldn't stand the new anime from the start, but I only dropped it for good when I saw how badly they butchered the Colosseum arc, which was my favorite arc of the original (and a staple of the genre I love seeing in general). Also pretty idiotic that they chose to revisit an old arc with so much material still not adopted.

Does it pick up after that?

It does have a few good bits but I can't really call it great it. There's just too little Kino in her journey. There's a few episodes about Katanaman, Kino's mentor and one about an unrelated character. They aren't bad stories but the always had me thinking:

>Where's Kino? I want to have some more stories about her in her series!

So be ready for that if you ever check it out.

For all it's flaws, I preferred the scene in which she shot the king in the new version. That energy ball in the original was kinda weird. I still prefer the fights and backstory in the original though..

Also, that's not the only part that they re-made.

The old anime was actually kinda nice to watch as someone going in mostly blind. The others I haven't checked out, but I usually don't like reading LNs because the English release of Spice and Wolf came out like garbage to me and put me off them.

I saw both the older and newer series. I tend to prefer the older which I saw after seeing the newer mostly because it had better versions of the story arcs that got condensed by the newer series.

I will say I liked the first episode of the newer series very much especially the spin at the end that put context into the way the country is managed. I also liked the episode about the country of liars.

I will also say that I liked the first episode of the older series the most since it illustrated how the things that try to make us more interconnected and make life more convenient can drive people apart.

I always found Kino to be pretty cute but I never bothered watching the anime, is it more like Girl's Last Tour or more like Mushishi?

I would say a mixture of both, but it's closer to Mushishi than SSR.
