Who was in the wrong here? Personally I support normalfags who hardly watch any anime and don't even speak Japanese to start "fansub" groups where they take pre-existing translations but remove about a hundred jokes and add in their own whimsical commentary about how hard being a "fansubber" is into the subtitle track.

What's the impetus for doing this besides vanity? Obviously there's always been a demand for updating old hardsubs to better encodes but if you're going to spend hours on a project like this you better go full blast so you're not poisoning the catalog with a superior video encode but attached to a shit sub track. I feel like this was an underappreciated reason for why good fansubs went out of fashion. Not just more normals on the internet watching anime, but because of the laziness of people like this who took on the responsibility of restyling and retiming the softsubbed releases egging on the change.

True, I just often read these conversations in the comments. It is sad when I see superior fansub release I watched 10+ years ago unjustly fade into irrelevancy after getting trumped by a superior encode though. I don't mind when it's being replaced by official subs because there will always be people who check out the fansubbed version(s), but it's sad when a new fansub encode is released like this and it's shit but it replaces the original anyway.

I kind of wish I had more context, but as a lazy fan translator myself, who started doing it because I was unsatisfied with the kind of shit that was available before, my attitude is that you should have some degree of pride in your work pushing you to do a good job, but I totally get being a lazy cunt and not wanting to spend any more than the bare minimum of effort to get the gist across as well. I think something like the OP/ED of a show falls under safe to not translate territory, especially if it's a currently airing show and you don't have access to lyrics, unless it is actually really relevant to the show.

I would say it's a case of "you get what you pay for", if not for official licensed translations being hot garbage. That said, I think there's no honor among thieves, and people taking existing subs and modifying them for better or worse should happen more. There amount of effort required is a natural barrier for entry which filters out most faggots even if some do slip through, and if enough people do it and you end up with lots of releases to choose from, and having a bunch of alternatives to choose from is a good thing. The disgusting faggots who unironically enjoy memesubs can have what they like, and the rest of us can have our honorifics and TNs and all that good shit.　皆ハッピー、ラブ＆ピース！

Fair enough, but in the admittedly small context of OP's example it looks like FuktLogik did have access to the lyrics to OP and ED of SZS but just decided that it wasn't important enough to add despite it being relevant to the show.

I don't mind a fansub group releasing incomplete subs as long as what they do release is good enough to be used. I'm all for an open-source collaborate approach where one group does the main script and then another group builds on their work by adding the OP and ED.

What seems to have happened here is that this faggot took an existing translation, didn't bother adding lyrics, and then expected to be praised for his "hard work". If he transcribed hardsubs then at least that's some contribution which could be used by others, but I don't know enough about the situation to really judge.

Either way, it's probably not worth worrying about. At worst he's just an irrelevant shitposter who can safely be ignored.

I don't think anyone is particularly wrong there, but if you do a release without doing the OP/ED, it shows you don't really care about the quality of what you're putting out. But that's always happened. If anything, it happens a lot less now because the "fansubbers" (if they can be called that) who release those things do put a lot more work into it instead of just doing something rough and ready which used to happen in the days of speedsubbers who would release just to be first even if that meant missing loads of lines because they couldn't work out what was being said.

Any fansubber who gets an ego and believes that they are too good to do the job they volunteered to do can just quit and stop acting like a cunt. When they get an attitude like that, it's practically guaranteed that they'll start changing dialog drastically, adding their own interpretations which are surely wrong, and even inserting shit that doesn't need to be there, because they mistakenly believe that anyone gives a fuck about their opinions or beliefs. When they're that far gone, it's no longer about the love of the series or giving back to the fans.

There is always a sense of elitism in any community. If you are the goto person for something, you'll get an ego if someone questions your authenticity.

Also, here's something I don't get since I see it a ton in some idol shows. If you are a pro-subber, and you're subbing an idol show, why don't they sub the songs on the show? The point of the idol show is the songs themselves. Not translating them is kind of missing the point of subbing an idol show. I don't think translation payment per sentence or per word would have that much of an affect whether its worth translating or not on the pro-subber side.

I don't even know how valid such an excuse would be, but copyright law is really fucked in general so I could actually imagine a situation where you're legally allowed to stream the song in the context of the anime, but not legally allowed to translate it.

Japan has some weird copyright laws so that probably is the case. Or it's something to do with actually getting official lyrics. They usually don't even put out official lyrics for ages after the song gets used for shit for some reason, and they're not even translated just transliterated.
