Just finished this for the sixth time. I feel like I get closer and closer to actually crying every time I watch it. There's just something so incredibly satisfying about watching Homura such a jaded and depressed person with literally no one to understand her. That scene where she's crying to Madoka on her knees and begging her to just stay for a second and Madoka just ditches her and meanwhile Kyuubey learns her secret and shits all over her is so fucking bleak I can't decide whether to laugh or to cry. The story is retarded but the development of Homura is just so brilliant that it doesn't really matter. I feel like rewatching it a million times only makes you relate to Homura more because you've also gone through everything a million times and you start to feel the bullshit Homura's trying to deal with first hand.
Urobutcher is a shitty writer, most of his stuff is irredeemable nonsense but somehow Madoka is pretty much a masterpiece.

The first time you watch it, you might be tempted to drop it because the first 3 or 4 episodes just sort of seem like edgy nonsense if you don't know what's going on. I actually dropped it like three times before I finally finished it. If you finish it and decide to rewatch it, all of it makes total sense and it's actually really good all the way through. It's probably the most rewatchable show I've ever seen. It's sort of like music, how you can just re-listen to songs as much as you want.
Although if you haven't seen any actual Mahou Shoujo series before like Precure or even Sailor Moon (not MS aimed at otaku like Moetan or Nurse Witch Komugi chan) then you might be too busy laughing at how stupid everything is to actually pay attention. That's probably one of the reasons I had such a hard time watching it at first, I liked it a lot more after I watched Precure.

It's kinda (not kinda, definitely) bland and is a super meme anime.
When it first aired, the whole "dark" stuff was novelty within Mahou Shoujo so people got struck by the surprise and sheer comedic shittiness of it.
Don't listen to OP, he's a shittytasted faggot trying to show off, like when a faggot says that some piece of crap modern art painting is genial.

No, you have no idea what you're talking about, Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de aru is a super meme dark Mahou Shoujo anime. Madoka is actually really entertaining and if you're actually paying enough attention to realize that Homura is the main character then you'd know that it's a good show. I'd also say it requires at least two viewings to really appreciate.
The art direction and general directing are too brilliant to ignore (yeah the art was pretty shitty at the beginning) as well as the buildup of Homura as a character.

The dude you're replying to though is full of shit. It's really not pseudo deep at all. Every time a character says something pseudo deep they either get totally shat on by reality or it's shown that they didn't really mean what they said later on. I'm not a sucker for edgy shows at all, I almost exclusively watch comedy and little girls shows and drop anything at the slightest hint of unwarranted drama. Madoka wasn't really an exception since i did drop it a few times but my opinion on it changed significantly once I actually gave it a chance.

The scenes in which we see the other timelines hit me the hardest. To see her try hard, giving her best, only for it all to end with her putting madoka down and crying over her corpse.
The amazing music really helps to give the scenes impact as well.

I thought it was really cool how the main theme used in the movie doesn't come in until the very last episodes of the show and is actually used sparingly. It gives the final scenes so much more impact. Most anime directors know jack shit about how to make music impactful and just order their henchmen to make le emotional chord progression and slather it all over the series with no subtlety at all.
I also like how Sayaka gets cuckolded and dies in every single timeline. It's pretty fucking hilarious and you can tell Homura gives zero shits about her and probably enjoys watching Sayaka die.
I gotta go watch Rebellion again now.

Wait so I watched this and rebellion without subs and I'm just wondering did they ever explain what benefit of kyuubey having girls harvest majuu was? Is it just because Madoka was taking up all the energy from the majou once she became the law of whatever and majuu were just another source of energy that didn't come from little girls?

I wasn't there but I can assure you that no one has the right to comment on something until ages after publication, Madoka can either be forgotten or be remembered as a essential anime show like Shakespeare to Western culture. No one knows until then.

Madoka basically made the energy source they where harvesting disappear, so in the new timeline they never went for that "negative emotion/grief seed" plan in the first place. Majuu are never really explained, not that there'd be a reason or enough screentime for it.

That makes sense, I guess kyuubey would be motivated to capture Madoka in Rebellion either way just because Madoka herself is energy regardless of the specifics behind majuu.
