I hoped this would be good, but the first episode didn't impress me much at all. The tone was lacking, the fights felt very weak, and there was already a fair bit of QUALITY.
The setting feels off, and leaves me unable to tell whether it's modern-day and only the spies and the bad guys have secret high-tech like robots, or a near-future that just looks almost identical to now.

I liked most of this episode, Momo's backstory and motivations were handled fairly well and I liked that we didn't get info dumped about her past. Just a few quick shots and some scenes her and there were enough to give a good understanding of the character. The other girls aren't fleshed out yet, like why purple was jealous, but I expect that will come in later episodes. The girls are cute, the mascots are cute, and there's just a hint of yuri (though I hope it'll be more than just licking and one-sided crushes). My only strong dislike was the music during the chase scene after Momo takes the pictures. Not to my taste and didn't fit with the idea of the show. Also the mention of a traitor at the end makes me interested to see who it might be.

Well I enjoyed the second episode a lot more than the first. The training was a lot of fun.
The characters still feel really one dimensional so hopefully they build on that. There was some odd stuff though. Playing intense electronic music as Momo is being shown gadgets seemed really inappropriate. Momo's passing of the test was also really lacklustre. I thought they were supposed to be super athletic spy girls, but then she gets thrown off by a barrier of tennis balls on the stairs? This is the same girl who jumped effortless across an entire courtyard. That was also bullshit by the way. It was like the animator thought 'oh its not that far in my drawing so she can probably jump it' without thinking about how vast the actual distance would really be. Really took me out of it.

I'm wondering who the traitor is. Today I was thinking maybe it could be Goemon? Considering she shot out the tonfa from the girls hand during the fight, but didn't shoot to kill when she clearly could have? I suppose that could be because she wanted to take her captive but.... still. So far this has been fine, even if there have been a lot of sloppy moments in the writing, directing, and overall animation quality. I'm incredulous that a girl like Momo managed to become a full fledged spy in just a short amount of time, performance enhancement drugs notwithstanding. I do like the chemistry between her and Yuki though. They make a good pair, which isn't quite the impression I had about the others (wasn't Fuu supposed to be possessive of Orange or something?). The fight choreography is nice, on the other hand. Every little movement and impact seems to carry enough force to make you feel its sheer potency, speed, etc. The animation is pretty fluid in action sequences, though the fight with tonfa loli was lacking in a few areas and the conclusion was lackluster. She can catch high speed shuriken but can be easily baited into stepping on a mine? You'd think she's a Metal Gear boss or something.
Speaking of which, I think what makes this show so charming is that there's something oddly cheesy about it, fighting yurus notwithstanding. It all seems really over the top, the music is energetic and the characters all follow their own particular archetypes in such a way that makes them one dimensional, but you can't help feeling like you enjoy them either way. Combine that with this ominous evil organization seemingly working under the Patriots and the impression you have is that entire thing was made without an ounce of pretentiousness. I can appreciate that. It reminds me times long gone when we could appreciate a story for what it is.
Now the question is will the main girls all suffer from some kind of collateral effect from all the spices they eat just like tonfa loli? Because that seems like the build up so far. Imagine them in the middle of an intense fight and then suddenly having an overdose, much like the Finn death god here >>873384.

Well, we already had women getting kidnapped, drugged, and forced into sex slavery last week, so it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility.
Speaking of which, it annoyed me that Momo could brush that off so easily. Not only did she not dwell heavily on it afterwards, she didn't even bring it up when questioning whether she was cut out to be a spy. I would have at least expected a comment about how as a spy she'd be facing awful things like that head-on.
An ordinary high school girl becoming a superhero-spy is ridiculous enough that it works. But having an ordinary high school girl confronted by that kind of situation and having her 100% unfazed by it doesn't play well with suspension of disbelief. The light-hearted approach to the characters doesn't mesh well with darker themes like that.

Obvious if you follow a logical story. With how things have gone so far we can map out the next few episodes where Momo and Blue are the pairing of interest two weeks from now (ep. 6) and at the same time the traitor is exposed to be Blue with a cliffhanger ending. Blue goes rogue or joins Moryo (ep. 7). Tonfaloli joins the good girl team (ep. 8). Battle of Blue + Moryo vs good girls (ep 9). Momo takes on Blue alone (ep 10) and we get lots of background and motivation for the betrayal (ep 11). Momo beats Blue who rejoins the good girls in a double crosser or super super secret destroy Moryo from the inside mission climax (ep 12). Momo thoroughly licks Blue (ep 13).
This just seems like the most obvious and standard approach. I hope you are right though since a side character traitor would be more interesting if done properly.

I mean, maybe they're saying that they were all working somewhere else already and then were just forced to work in that particular establishment, which isn't quite as dark but holy shit otherwise that's just a downright documentary of modern china and not at all fun JK spy activities. I still don't know how to feel about this show. Maybe it really is just that mediocre. As >>880640 said, there's no tension at all. They keep teasing you that shit's going to down any second, but in the end the girls are constantly being sent on wild goose chases, finding a bunch of clues that lead to nowhere. They also introduce these wacky villains that only show up for one episode when you really just wish they would be more recurring in the story. The old man with the snakes was some Metal Gear shit and I loved it. Same goes for the masochistic drug dealer. But it's like they only tease you with these fights, and even if they are well animated, they still lack tension. It's like if Jojo had all these cool enemy stand users, but the main characters just punch through them anyway instead of presenting these villains as actually life threatening. And that's what this show is. It's all one big cock-tease. I'm sure that whole thing about the spyce's effects seemingly becoming weaker that they, again, teased in the last episode will lead to nothing. They'll probably be finding blonde, find out their meth doesn't work because their bodies are adjusted to it, but they'll win because "they fought with their own strength" or something or other.
Really the only good thing is the character interactions, which is something Takahiro's very good with if anybody who has read Majikoi can attest. The chemistry between the girls is great, even during the more serious moments.

I never expected any better from this show, but still I'm somewhat impressed that it's so predictable you could guess the traitor after 2 measly episodes. Now next episode's first half will be continuing the despair, then
>haha it's joke I was just pretending to be of betrayings
then
<heh nothin personnel, kids, it's too late to stop mayo
episode ends, finale with big fight in part 1, then part 2 is everyone doing happy spy things. The only question is if they keep blue alive, but most likely yes, either through double spicing or being in on the betrayal. They'll probably kill someone in the last battle anyway, for good measure.

Her betrayal was way over the top. If they actually intended it to be taken seriously, then they fucked that up, too. But silver hair will obviously change sides, that was a given since her introduction. She's also one of the candidates for getting killed to death.

Both options are very cliche, it's just that if they wanted to go for that particular cliche with a straightforward betrayal, they failed at depicting it, because it looked a lot more like the other cliche playing out. It's bad either way.
Though I think having orange stay a bad guy and killing her would be the more original plotline, if they actually followed through with that, my opinion of the show would slightly increase.

Maybe, on the other hand, what other value does her character, and very little appearances have but using her for shock value, while also showing "she really became good at the end" etc.

My biggest worry is that they'll capture her at the end and then the jelly will go into effect, she'll forget all about being the traitor, and they end up forgiving her or letting her off easy.
No.886612
That change in tone was almost too jarring. Maybe it's because it came too late into the show and as we talked about before, there was basically no tension in the plot. Now suddenly orange has come forward as the traitor and everyone's getting steamrolled. I don't know, Takahiro has done something similar in Yuuki Yuuna but even then the entire story in that case suggested something was deeply wrong with what the heroines were doing. In Spyce, though, it felt like there was no buildup. Maybe there were a few bits here and there that hinted at orange being on the villains' side, but I had frankly lost most of the interest I had in the show at about the halfway point, so who knows. If Orange was getting paid to leak information, though, it does explain why she was so lax with expenses. Also I am still somewhat mad too because she was my favorite.

Also, this should could've probably been improved dramatically if it was given two cours instead of one. Sage for doubleposting.

Honestly they didn't give enough clues that it was orange... besides her being poor, and careless with spending despite being poor, but you could just put that down to being a impulsive person. Also, why do the Tsukikage girls live off base anyway? That place is huge. Orange could easily make money on the side without betraying too, via theft with her mad skills. She doesn't even have to kill. She says Tsukikage has to many rules, but where are these shown? Moryo has more rules.
Anyway, a bad betrayal. That said, I must admit taking over the world would motivate me a lot more than 'defending the status quo.'

Except that Moryo doesn't give a single shit about pawns, the only ones in control are the faceless jews old men and maybe to some extent the blonde, but blonde is still disposable considering the previous leader dying didn't cause huge issues. And orange is definitely below her, I don't know what she's expecting drinking Moryo koolaid.
No.886653

I know some people were predicting Orange since early on, but it was based on little more than who the traitor usually is. At least for some of the other suspects you could construct lines of reasoning to explain their actions in contrast to the betrayal.
She was pretty low on my list after her and Purple's episode, but she ended up rising to the top an episode or two before the betrayal. So I don't have the satisfaction of saying I was right all along, but I did eventually see it coming so I didn't get to enjoy it as a surprise either.

You should know that is coming. Orange even whispered something in Fu's ear before leaving her to the rape machine. Fu had a light reaction to that too and Orange had the chance to outright kill Fu with the lipstick explosive but chose not to.
This episode really tried to have all the pieces of a bad guys win episode with the shocked reactions from the masses and shots of the big bad device. Other anons have mentioned already that the show lacks tension and that lack of tension was on full display once again. We just dont care what the bad guys do with this drug. The story is lacking a reason for this whole conflict. Moryo is bad because theyre bad doesnt interest the viewer. If the story started with blue and her partner getting killed and blue seeking revenge this whole time we could be building up towards bad girl vs blue (or Momo). None of this is present though so were just watching cute girls play a big game of cops and robbers, which is nice in its own way.

I am fully expecting it, doesn't change the fact that it'll be complete bullshit after she endangered them and their families.
Although as for your two examples, Fu still acts as if Mei betrayed them after escaping the rape machine, even though she's just talking to Momo and Goe. Granted, I wouldn't be surprised if everyone knew she was playing traitor all along and scenes like that are just chalked up to bad writing. And Mei has said she wants Fu left alive.

No, it doesn't. Even children anime, airing in morning time slots can get away with panty shots and bath scenes as long as they aren't excessively sexualised.
Spyce premiers at 02:38 on MBS, and they have shown things far worse than pantsu.
Not showing any panties was a decision by the creative staff. Some directors and authors believe that leaving panties up to the viewers imagination is better than showing them.
That's why there are shots like >>880752, they don't show the pantsu because it would ruin the mystery. And almost showing the pantsu makes the viewers imagination run wild.

An even bigger plothole is that Orange could've sabotaged Tsukikage as a whole but just kept "giving them information." Although that could also point to her merely pretending to be a bad guy.
>>887354
I'd say the lack of tension is because the heroes aren't very interesting at all. It's like they got all the Foxhound faggots from Metal Gear but stripped them from all their charm and personality. Even Theresa seems to be there for no reason other than to give Yellow some conflict. This is the kind of setting that you could have with a two-cour series, a sprawling CRPG like Deus Ex, or a 100-hour visual novel with interesting lore, characters, world-building, intrigue and over the top charm. A device that releases a drug to brainwash people is the perfect setting for Bird Slut to have some melodramatic speech about her motives.
This show has everything it needs to be fucking great, but instead it just falls flat on its face, like it's some kind of adaptation of something that never came to be, constantly teasing with a little something more, but never delivering. Literally the only saving grace is that the fight scenes are quite nice.
>>887655
It could also be that they figures showing the pantsu would detract from the purpose of the scene, which is that Black was going on a violent rampage and that she can single handedly beat down a building full of yakuza like a protagonist from Ryuu ga Gotoku.

Sad scenes like that near the end usually get me, but I practically didn't care at all. The last arc made me mentally check out. The rest wasn't GREAT, but it had some great elements and was smooth enough to be enjoyable. Shame. The girls and the setting deserved better storywriting.

Stopping the drugs at the last second was the most retarded of tension building choices. It's not a bomb or a countdown to the drugs being released, it was how long it took the drug to reach complete saturation. The drug accumulation would of turned 99% of the population into zombies

>So what the fuck was that smile at the end? Are her memories erased or not? Did Momo not shoot best girl and they're pretending she did?
My theory is that Yuki scammed Momo, she gave Momo a pistol-phone with fake memory erasure bullets. After getting shot, Yuki just needed to pretend to have lost her memory. This allows Momo to get independent and Yuki can later rejoin Tsukikage as support.

I'd say this summarizes my feelings about this show. It had so many elements that could have contributed to an excellent show but somehow everything didn't align and it came out jumbled. Character design, OP and ED, etc. all felt wasted. The only thing that was egregiously bad was the OST.

This really was a strange show for those reasons. I can't really say this was bad but despite all the great things it has going for it, it all turned out painfully average. I think it's mostly because the writing felt super generic and predictable despite having an interesting setting and premise.

I'd blame the character writing above all else. By tropes and design, I should've liked plenty of them a lot, but in the end they were all so generic executions, even after the whole 12 episodes I barely cared about any of them. And this kind of show relies heavily on the characters, since the story was never going to be anything spectacular.

I think you're right, the more I think about it the more that seems to be the issue. The characters were so flat that they hardly stood apart outside of their basic archetypes. And even then half of them were just varying degrees of "cute and bubbly."
No.890291
This was about as meh as it gets. I tried may best to like this but at the end it didn't quite deliver. I admit though the action scene choreography and designs were excellent. I'm a big fan of the industrial setting for some of the scenes. It gives Spyce its own flavor heh. Speaking of which, I really think the idea of the Spyce losing effect was going to lead into something greater, other than simply indicating that eventually you can't work in the frontlines anymore. It makes the characters seem overly reliant on their drugs.
>>889873
One thing I do recall that was executed quite nicely was the idea that spies are liars. It tied in well to Orange's double agent plan, and it may also tie into Blue's last scene as well. She didn't simply want to leave Tsukikage -- rather, she wanted Momo to follow her own path, because she was still too reliant on Blue. But that's a dyke for you.
Oh, I did like how Tendo tried taunting Momo about her father's death, only for Momo to show no reaction. Nice twist on an old cliche.
