I was one of those lucky many who happened to discover the original FLCL right as I was hitting puberty. Due to this, I HATED FLCL Progressive. It felt nothing like the original, in fact, it was embarrassingly generic. Best I could rate it is 2/10. FLCL Alternative is significantly better, but more importantly, it captures the FLCL feel markedly better than Progressive. It's still not objectively good, somewhere around 6/10. However, this is all I expected from a 20-years-later cash grab and my personal connection to the series bumps it up to a high 7. If you're in the same boat as me, it's definitely worth watching during this dry spell.

I wish there was more to say, but the girls aren't sufficiently cute which is a huge deterrent so I doubt this thread will hit 20 posts.

Glad you said this first because it hits right to the heart of why these sequels shouldn't have been made. FLCL isn't a story about Guitars and robots. It's a puberty allegory and a pretty great one that resonates perfectly with the era it was created in.

I guess in a way it's a guilty pleasure. They obviously shouldn't have been made, but we happen to live in the reality where they were. That's cool to me, but I know it damages the artistic integrity. Man, any more Cowboy Bebop episodes would likely be terrible, but I'd probably give whatever came out an automatic +5.

With name taker animes the original idea has alot of development and style to it and then there's its shitty sister that just rips off the name and does whatever's popular at the time not thinking about aesthetics or even plot

(Easy examples: fullmetal alchemist brotherhood soul eater not flcl progressive sailor Moon crystal boruto )

>A rehash of the superior parent series that replaced the protags with cute girls.

This isn't inaccurate.

I'm not sure I like these new FLCL things. It's like watching a skinwalker take your friends place and act as if nothing happened.

No, if you'll allow me to be edgy then an accurate description would be; seeing a Jewish man (Adult Swim) realize people like properties that either ended properly but are still up for grabs (Birdman, FLCL) or one's that never ended and are easier to grab (12 Oz Mouse, Samurai Jack) without understanding what made them what they were in the first place, cutting off their faces and putting it on theirs while dancing around saying "This is what you wanted isn't it goyim? Why are you crying? Don't you like it?"

These sequels were so shitty and unnecessary that I'm a little befuddled to how bad they were and why they were even made, nobody asked for this. Progressive superficially tracked the same ground as the original in an extremely watered-down way and all of its themes were extremely weak, and the episodes were weak as well, it's just weak and shitty.

Isn't that the case with any sequel, remake, reimagining of any franchise? There are rare cases where the sequel is ever good as the original that made the franchise popular in the first place.

Progressive was pretty bad. It took the style that was that one manga scene in the original and spread that over 6 episodes. Even though the first episodes of both feel like rehashes, I think Alternative at least tried to go for the puberty aspect from a girl groups respective for it's 6 episode allotment. They might turn out okay a couple of months after you get it out of being fresh and new in your mind and try to overly compare it to the original but I think it'll just turn out the same. Progressive was stylish trash and Alternative is okay but unnecessary.

Also, I'm not sure if there is much political subtext to that collared woman. I know she's based on a real person since I recognized that character from a mahjong manga I read in the past. You know, the one where you fight super saiyan Hitler on the moon.

I thought it was better than Progressive but I was hoping for an appearance by more of the original cast.

I liked how Progressive showed adult versions of two original season characters in the credits which onto itself acted as a backstory for that season.

The two additional seasons are guilty pleasures but then again, so is much of the anime I have seen.

Guys, where/how can I watch FLCL Progressive with subtitles? I can't stand the dub.

I'm not a teen anymore, I've only recently discovered FLCL and it hit me like a truck, it hit me right in the prepubescent feels and I feel alive again (and it hurts). I only watched ep 1 of Progressive, it's shit alright, but at least the first song was good.

Can you guide an unfortunate soul, please? I have to go through this.

Yeah, I want to know how to watch the non dub, too, but I don't think it's out yet or something.

I'm glad you liked it.
