Does the Protoculture plot thread make any sense? Their civilization was being destroyed by the Zentradi, but they already had stuff that could easily beat them without ever making devils (birdmen, the Star-singer, a giant shielded battleship they gave to the Windemerians). Originally, it was that the Protoculture became too militant and transitioned into the Zentradi, but then it was that the Zentradi went rouge and destroyed their masters, then it was the devils created to destroy the Zentadi threat being hijacked by protodevilin that promptly ate all the life-force in the galaxy (and they still somehow, and for some reason, sealed the Protodevilin into stasis even though they would have starved without spiritua). In Delta, it's sort of implied the Protoculture was a hivemind. Did they transcend into another plane after becoming one, and just left the races they seeded to build a new culture without them? Why didn't the Windemerians become a hyper advanced civilzation after the Protoculture flat-out gave them their technology and a device that can mind control the entire galaxy and create convenient interstellar fold portals?

I don't really like how singing has been turned into space-magic. Macross 7 was great, but it opened a can of worms, and we're now treading into "nanomachines son" territory. It's far more touching to see just plain music, without the intervention of a plot device, move the hearts of the enemy. Everytime another series after the original shows singing to stop militant zentradi, I'm reminded how great they were as main antagonists.

I can't speak for most of the Macross Franchise, but I thought Frontier handled it wonderfully. The idols were of strategic military importance, but where used in conjuction with military strategy. And "Vajra sing with their tummies" bullshit aside, I thought it was great how the space bugs needed to hear two separate singers singing to them to understand humans. They just need to make a macross where there's two space pilots competing for one idols' attention instead and they'll find the right balance of military bullshit.

Watching Macross 7 now, only just started. I hear a lot of good things about it due to the rock focus, and some bad things.
Is it hated because MC is an insufferable faggot like Kaifun who wants everyone to just sit around listening to music? Because it's getting on my nerves. He keeps shooting missiles every other episode right now but then gets mad at himself for not "reaching them with my singing" instead. No, it had the concept of culture being just as important as war and how we shouldn't lose either. Same with men and women both being important and it expressed this beautifully. The original Macross wasn't about songs. It was about culture. Remember how "Culture" to the Zentradi also meant romance between the sexes.
