His name was Danny, and he was a good dog. Danny was an old dog, who grew up alongside me. He was loyal, patient, protective, and 100% a good boy.
About 6 weeks ago, we found some lumps on his neck. We took him to the vet, and they said it was probably bacterial; thus, he got some pills and we went on our way. However, I wasn't convinced, and two weeks later when the vet prescribed steroids to help with his "quality of life," I knew the end was near.
I'll save you the details, but he deteriorated pretty quickly, culminating in my carrying him to and from the car as he entered the vet's office for the last time, for he could no longer walk more than a few steps.
He passed swiftly and peacefully, maintaining the dignity he had always possessed, his body and mind both saying in his final days "I'm ready." And before that passing, I was afforded the most wonderous present I could of hoped for. As I felt his last breaths drawing near, his fur between my fingers, I was able to draw near to his ear and say those words which had sat heavy in my chest since I knew his days were numbered: "good bye."
