Man, my pre-teen self used to have the biggest crush on Sora... What a dreamboat she was.

 No.842538

>>841265

Sora was always a huge cunt. At first it made sense because the premise was that she represented love when she was a child and had to learn to recapture that emotion which she had lost. Then they say she did it, and she activates the Crest, but she continues acting the same as she did before. Huge fucking cunt throws a tantrum so she can't help when Tokyo is about to get nuked, all because Taichi was nice enough to give her a birthday present, but not one good enough for her.

Shippingfags are cancer though. And Tri got kinda neat by the end but not enough to make me give a shit. 02 is still canon, but it doesn't seem as bad anymore because Tri was so much worse. Anyway in 02 Sora decides to fuck Matt because he's a rockstar. The epilogue shows them still together and with kids in the future.

>>841470

Sora has the tomboy thing going, which would normally be straight up my alley, but upon rewatching, she's an absolute cunt. Now I normally don't go for just "pure," but Mimi is the literal embodiment of purity, and cannot be beat. My child self only saw her as a bitch, but only because I didn't appreciate that this was supposed to be a character flaw and a key part of the plot was overcoming each character's flaw and becoming the opposite of what they were at the beginning of the tv series, reverting to what they were in the movie. While Sora fails to do this convincingly, Mimi sticks to the idea of Purity, and is actually a nice, caring, and thoughtful person once she learns her lesson.

Hikari is an ultimate Mary Sue, only outdone by Mei in Tri. Hikari also has purity going for her, as well as everything else, including being a literal messenger for god, because she's good at everything ever. So fuck that she's not best waifu either. Mimi forever.

I got to the second movie before I stopped. I want to finish Tri someday, but every time I hear about it it's usually not in a very good light and how it tramples over the original characters by the end of it. I'd rather remember them from how they were in Adventure and even 02 then to see how they got retconned further.

It's not that it ruined the characters, it's just that it's fucking boring. The plot and even the action don't even really get started until the fourth movie. Once it gets started it's sorta okay but it takes way too damn long to really get started.

Tri made me realize that most the original cast don't have a personality. Those who do are just annoying as is the case for Mimi. She forces herself into everything and shoe horns in the mary sue in the most annoying ways possible. What's supposed to be endearing is just annoying.

02's cast may not be excellent but I can't say any of the 2nd generation children are personalityless. The smaller cast size made them able to flesh out a personality more even if those personalities didn't evolve as much as they should have. Completely cutting them out of Tri was a huge mistake. There is no reason they couldn't have had them return for the final battle and act as support. No one would have complained if we got a 10 second shot of each of the 02 kids older and their Digimon fighting off the invasion force. They could have even shown their higher tier solo evolutions since Tri made it clear that top tier evolutions now applied to every one even if they never had an in universe reason to reach that level.

>>842568

It's slice of life until the apocalypse happens. And the movies retcon the 1 major event that happens right in the next movie. The only good scene involves Patamon and all it does is make you angry at the stupid decisions everyone is making which leads to the event happening.

>>842666

The personalities are all in the execution. In Adventure it worked because they all got a few spotlight episodes, and while the characters were all somewhat two dimensional, the two dimensions each one did have were part of the plot, with unlocking the Crests.

Tri just sucked because everything was just about cute girls doing cute things instead of doing anything with an interesting plot or any emotional resonance.

It was neat to see the origin of the Holy Beasts though

 No.843186

>>843036

When I was a kid I totally thought the same thing. Killed the franchise for me. Later I gave it a chance and it turned out to be pretty good. Adventure and 02 both don't really give the Digimon personalities anyway, they're more just extensions of the children. That's why the children get credit for things the digimon do even though the children never do a damn thing. Frontier just cuts out the middleman and has the children transform into the Digimon, which doesn't actually change anything when you get down to it. I still wouldn't say it's as good as the previous, but it's not bad.

And yeah Tamers gave a bit more personality to the Digimon but still not much. And even then they were largely just exaggerated versions of the children. Renamon has a bit of conflict with Ruki but that's about the extent of any Digimon really having an independent personality.

 No.843271

The Digimon are the only characters with a personality in Tamers.

 No.843295

I'd like to see a Digimon series made with more of an adult focus to it. Do a kaiju movie but with digimon and see how far you can push the horror elements. I know they won't do it but I think it has some real legs to it.

>Be a normal dude going about life

>Digimon materalize and start to destroy Tokyo

>Dude finds a cute digimon like Terriermon or Koromon injured

>Tried to protect it from a building collapse

>Digimon bonds with him from the care

>The two of them flee the giant ass monster

>As Dude and digimon bro flee from various kaiju style digimon like Tyrannomon and Kuwagamon

>Dude and digibro bond

>End up trapped in dead end with a big digimon

>Digibro evolves and protects Dude from an attack, Slaughters the kaiju digimon but can't take on the biggest monsters

>More fleeing but now the kaiju are more aggressive after seeing one of their friends killed

>End up with some other companions, some with digimon and some without

>Kaiju digimon finally trap them in a way they can't escape

>Fight happens

>Good guys getting their shit wrecked

>Dude picks up a pipe and smashes in some smaller Digimon's heads.

>Dude is injured and bleeding out

>Digibro loses his shit and takes on Perfect form/armoured form/matrix evolutions to merge with human and proceeds to kick the ever loving shit out of the Kaiju digimon

>City is a blaze

>Military are moving in

>Heroes are nearly dead laying in the middle of a pile of digimon corpses when the military arrive

>Movie ends with the heroes surrendering to the military who are suspicious of the monsters

It's such an obvious film to make and it would be amazing. Digimon can do post apocalypse scenarios as it did with Savers. It just needs to admit it has adult fans and stop the bullshit kiddy non-sense which stagnates the entire cast into being blank slates with no development unless your names Ken.

 No.843395

>I'd like to see a Digimon series made with more of an adult focus to it.

They did. It was called Tri. While Digimon used to be for kids who like kaiju, now it's for those same kids who have since grown up into what Bandai assumes are 30 year old otaku who like cute girls doing cute things.

I'd watch a show like you describe, but what you don't realize is that that is a kids' show. Kids have much better taste than adults, as they actually want more complexity and understand the original appeals of the series. The adults they make shit only want faux-childish garbage that throws out everything that made the franchise good in the first place.

 No.843401

Tri was made for the modern anime market which is all VNs and slice of life. I wouldn't consider the people you describe as adults. They're still children mentally.

Children want to be adult, but these adults want to be children. Thing is, they're weirdos who want that sense of childhood because they don't know what childhood actually is. My guess is that they resent that their childhood wasn't how they wanted it to be so they have these fantasies. But the thing is, these are still the fantasies of an adult about childhood, and not the types of fantasy an actual child would have about their present lives. The fantasies an actual child would have would be kaiju and stuff, like Digimon is supposed to be, which is why it's good. Except Tri.

 No.843560

>>843551

I wouldn't say the digimon animes are good. They have good episodes but the series themselves are rather lack luster overall. Because the cast sizes are so large you end up with a lot of filler episodes to keep everyone on the same power level. Joe and Gomamon, Mimi and Palmon being a good example of filler cast members. 02 has the same problem with Takeru. Tamers with Lee (although Terriermon is great) and Takato to a degree.

Digimon is a lot like Star wars. The main media is meh but as an universe for games and side stories it's a gold mine. There's very few series as well suited to computer games as Digimon and it's only recently they started to make the most of that with cyber sluts and the DS RPGs.

 No.843566

>>843560

The anime is good as long as what you want is a series about monsters fighting each other with a surprisingly complex plot and likable enough characters with just enough depth to feel like there is a point to them.

 No.843599

>>843569

Yeah but the song that plays during fights is good.

The writing was surprisingly complex and subtle. Like yeah it's for kids, but though I didn't notice it as a kid, I do find it to have a lot of foreshadowing and detail upon rewatching. Like even though they only reveal the bit about the crests representing emotions in the Vamdemon arc like 30 episodes in, previous episodes, like when they evolved to adult level, or when they collected many of the crests, still showcased each character's particular emotion, long before that was revealed as a plot point.

I'll also admit that I got really autistic with it recently when I realized how autistic the multiverse gets with the WonderSwan games and stuff. The different parts of the franchise support each other well. 02 becomes a lot better when you realize it's as much a prequel to Tag Tamers as it is to Adventure.

 No.843601

>>843599

Which of the Wonderswan games are translated? they seem vital to the Digimon universe and yet we can hardly touch them. I tried to emulate one of them on the PSP but the wonderswan emulator wouldn't save.

 No.843604

>>843601

Only the first, which is the most bare bones. It had an official english release in HK. It only begins the story, and the gameplay seems to advance a lot in the sequels.

There is a site online that has translations for all the story text, but nobody's ever gotten around to injecting it into the game. You'd think with how autistic the fanbase can get, someone would have done it by now, but instead they just spend all their time drawing Renamon porn.

Though the Digimon Adventure PSP game finally got a translation recently, after five years, so maybe there's hope. I just try to publicize the WonderSwan games and how integral they are in the hopes that someone will do it. At least unless I get competent enough at moonrunes and coding to do this myself.

The thing that really bothers me with the WS games never being translated is that they're obviously the games that would have appealed to western audiences the most. The series was popular in the west due to the anime, and everyone in that audience saw it as a pokemon-like, so you'd think the game would have something to do with the anime and play something like Pokemon. So here are these games that are about collecting monsters in a turn based rpg, with a battle system that's different enough to not feel like a 100% ripoff of pokemon but still easy enough to understand, and the story is not only related to the anime, but is integral to the plot, as actual sequels that are heavily referenced in the anime, with key plot points not even making sense without them, and key characters being first introduced and built up in the games. Let's not release those games, let's release this super obtuse virtual pet that takes place in a world and with a story and cast that is nothing like the anime that made the series popular. Oh that actually sold well? Let's release a completely different super obtuse dungeon crawler with a story and cast and world that is completely unrelated to both the anime and the previous game, but release it as a sequel. Repeat changing genre and world with every sequel. I mean yeah this happened with the anime too, but at least the anime did two seasons in a row that were related. And actually the third season was heavily related too but you'd never know if you never played the WonderSwan games which were never released outside Japan.
