You'll enjoy it more with context. I say this as a lolicon who watched/read it for the loli first before having touched Fate but then went through it all again after having read S/N and H/A. Hollow Ataraxia in particularly is good for context in Prilya since that's closer to the setting it's based on (rather than the main Fate VN).

You get much the same feel going into FS/N having watched Prisma Illya first. Prisma Illya stands on its own very well, in fact I think there are some parts I enjoyed more than I would having read Fate in advance.

Otogi Jyuushi is pretty dark in a lot of its themes, I mean, one of the animation directors(?) went on to write MiA. Not to say that it shouldn't be on that list but it's weird to see it branching off of heartcatch and listed as 'more cutesy and contemporary'.

You're right about korezombie, it's really a harem parody with (parodied) mahou shoujo themes than it is a mahou shoujo parody. Witchcraft works is in a similar boat, but while all 魔法少女 are 魔女 not all 魔女 are 魔法少女 and this is fairly apparent in Witchcraft Works where the most common mahou shoujo themes are really not very apparent.

I've seen way too many people give up or nearly do so once they reach the second half of Futari Ha to honestly recommend it to someone as their first precure.

Overall I'm not really sure about this being a flowchart style graphic though. Seems very arbitrary, maybe even biased, in a lot of ways and not neccessarily very helpful. It might be better to just group of categories with a few keywords under each title including suggestions for popular 'entry' titles for particular categories.

What about the contemporary Nurse Witch Komugi and Twin Angel? The new Twin Angel was kind of shit, but the new Komugi is more rounded compared to the meme-y joke OVAs and I'd have it take that slot instead.

Also, like anon said, the flowchart doesn't really help. In the right side you just give up and "go nuts".

Maybe just group them into buckets and draw lines between shows that are good transitions into other buckets.

I think Symphogear and Vividred should be included somewhere close to Nanoha, since they are otaku pandering and more fanservicey than the usual mahou shoujo/idol shows while still playing their premise straight instead of being straight parodies. Maybe take out a few of the joke shows from the right and replace them with these two, people who like the ironic stuff will be able to quickly find more of it, even if you just give half as many examples.

What about chronological order in a weighted tree diagram? Obviously this means digging up some history and studying works for influences. You would not include every mahou shojo ever either, just landmark titles and a "for more X see list A". The weights of the tree diagram describe the amount of influence, e.g. Nanoha lets say is colored purely red influencing F/K would make F/K having some shade of red as a glow effect or something. The resulting color combinations then describe the amount of influence older titles have on newer ones. Readers who prefer Nanoha-like shows would simply pick the reddest looking titles. Obviously things get out of hand if you go too far without careful planning and design.

I'm not a big Shoujo fan, but my first series was in fact Madoka, kinda okay, is good but I think half the series is just a waste of time there's too much plot and little character maybe except for Homura and Kyubey being the only tridimensional characters Probably Sayaka, my main grips is that while the themes are messed up it doesn't feel adult, probably the directing, I think it was trying too hard to be a deconstruction that it kinda forgets to be its own thing.

On the other hand Utena I think is fantastic, while a deconstruction of the Mahou Shoujo concept more than the genre itself, is more of its own thing and as you put it is just subversive in general and the directing I believe is less try hard and feels more adult IMHO, it feels like is not messed up in themes but messed up in its very basis to the point the messed up becomes the status quo and you forget how messed up it is in the first place.

Although I won't ignore 39 episodes to flesh out stuff compared to 12.

It reminds me to Evangelion, beyond whatever you can say about any aspect of it there's an underlying aspect of sincerity to it from the author, like it reflects feelings more than ideas.

I think I'll continue with Rayearth, looks right in my alley, is there more like it.

I like plot more than character, so that's actually a plus in my opinion. I had someone recommend Yuuki Yuuna for better character development than Madoka, and yet I hated it despite wanting it to be good. The plot made no sense and the tragedy was over-the-top, whereas Madoka's plot was fairly straight forward and not so unbelievable. The characters even felt more static than Madoka's with the exception of the little sister. I watched it all the way through, but I ended up deleting it. I don't really see anything wrong with the way Madoka was done besides Madoka's own character. We don't get to see a whole lot of her due to the show taking place in the timeline it does, so she seems static as fuck. At no point though did I feel like it was not a solid work. The world building, the fights, the music, the character designs for the girls, the art direction, it all really came together I think. The QUALITY was a problem, sure. The wide heads and general art style might not be everyone's cup of tea, and the boy Sayaka liked was indeed the weakest of the character designs. I really don't think it's enough to say "it's shit" like some people do though.
