You misunderstood him, females don't like when other females are attractive, because it means direct competition that they can't overcome. No matter how physically beautiful a male is, you can still outdo him in other areas; or if you prefer dishonourable or underhanded methods, then you can tarnish his fame. An attractive women is simply attractive, and an other woman can't really do anything with that (other than pouring acid on her). So they want them gone, and therefore they don't want to see beautiful cartoon girls. They prefer pic related.

Look at GuP for a good example: they are so far away from how most females behave, you might as well replace them with aliens or androids or horribile dictu: boys. Here's the thing: because anime typically has a diverse female cast, it's easy to find a female character that any given 3DPD can identify with. The answer to the question posited in the OP is definitely not "3DPD can't identify with characters in anime".

Perhaps, it's sort of the opposite. Maybe they hate anime because they don't find any of the male characters sufficiently attractive. Look at the media women do like. Soap operas, smut, normalfag sitcoms, etc. All or most of the male characters are impossibly perfect chads. In anime, the male characters are typically more flawed and realistic than the female, if there even ARE male characters.

Women are a fairly big audience for anime, just not in the way men are, because men and women are different. Additionally, you need to understand the following:

Feminists are insincere liars - They do not believe in the things they whinge about.

Women see other women, even fictional ones, as competition - Seeing cute girls doing cute things often reminds them that they have no stable relationships, because western women are typically far more neurotic and mentally unstable.

Feminism, as an ideology and mentality, is deeply hypocritical, contradictory, and leads to dangerous levels of cognitive dissonance - This is why "sexually empowered" characters, women who are dominant and in control of their bodies and their lives, are seen as "problematic" even though feminist desperately preach that women should be sexually liberated and empowered, and that they should do slut walks and even though they should be seen as erotic goddesses, no one should sexualize them either.

Feminists don't want a solution to their problems, they want to be mad - Complaining about things and battering hobbies into submission is a means for them to gain social power and influence. They want control more than they wanting a show or two that's relatively in-line with the things they claim to believe, but actually don't.

I could see it for different reasons.

-The normalfag woman is highly social and like many, defined in her tastes during her teen years. If she never engaged in anime, she'll hardly want to do it now. If her acquaintances don't care or don't watch it, why would she do it, she'd think. Kinda hard to venture out on a new hobby alone and especially one with a social stigma like anime and its "icky" parts.

-Media says what's cool and not, so the anime recommendations are the flavor of the month, easy to digest stuff. While at the same time, some of these series exalt the icky parts of anime like the large eyes, the fanservice, squeaky voices/screaming voices, so the normalfag woman won't find out about a more grounded series. And series featuring a mostly female underage cast will keep her away. Dunno how many would be interested in ikemen series, you can't round them up in the same group.

-Fans themselves. The people that are still in that obnoxious, loud, screeching phase that throw their weight around as experts, and that in their attempt to be accepted, want to be some kind of social "otaku" so they will obnoxiously share their tastes, memes and whatnot, and will follow social cues so they'll stay away from the icky stuff saying they don't like lawlis and whatnot. They want to be accepted but still have their terrible quirks like not knowing social cues, their hygiene, the way they dress, etc. The normalfag woman will perceive this crowd as the average and will stay out. We try to keep our powerlevel low for various reasons, so like hell we'll want to risk recommending a series to these women, and being exposed.

-The media itself. The normalfag woman will be able to binge watch older series, but it's not easily accessed, they'll either need to have a Blu-ray/DVD borrowed or someone sharing the series on a hard drive. And if it's not on Netflix, she'll need to learn how to torrent or search for a series, so she might not want to do all that work. Manga or LN have a slow schedule, so if the series is still running, she might lose interest and fast if she's not super hooked on it. Then artstyle can be a huge factor too. With real actors you know they're just people, some attractive for your eyes and others that aren't. How is gonna be a normalfag convinced that despite the ugly artstyle or wonky animation, X series has a story that might interest her?

-Culture. Be it because of globalism or sharing similarities in different countries, the normalfag woman will digest or understand foreign works. But Japan has its very own distinct culture that is so different from others. The normalfag woman might be confused when they start telling a joke or a pun, the long silences, the long wide shots of nature or animals, why are the characters living alone with no parents, why are the parents distant/so chummy, why do they enjoy drinking milk so much after hot springs, etc. Even today, you keep learning about a small tidbit or concept, so you enjoy the series more or look for more series that share this. The normalfag woman will have to learn this as well, and without someone or something to guide her, she will not understand, lose interest or not appreciate what we can appreciate. I'm not saying they're stupid, only that they'd have to understand a lot of new concepts, and that depends on how interested they are.

Do you live under a rock, anon? I'm not sure how it is on the coasts, but Jesus Christ, it's a completely different makeup in the Great Plains. Hetalia, Black Butler, Fruit's Basket, Kodocha, and a handful of other anime are all the fujoshits girls in my anime/D&D circles would talk about to the point where I had better luck talking with the two other male autists in the club about any hot-blooded anime or things like Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star (or really even things like Evangelion). There was one weird girl from a borderline-homeless-poor family who was really into loli to the point where I'd study with her after school so we could discuss the latest lolicon anime or doujins, but she was a Dyke through-and-through and it turned awkward after a while. It got to the point where us three autists considered making a separate club to talk about hot-blooded anime, but we couldn't get a teacher to sponsor us/the principle found out and told us forming rival clubs was against school policy even if the Fujoshits were in charge of the club from every position on down. We ended up forming a "Japanese Language" club but that turned to shit since none of us spoke Nip. Afterwards we formed a "strategy club" and played war games (like Risk, Warhammer, and some 1960s WWII model tank game called "lightning panzer" or something like that, that the Math teacher sponsor bought for us) while we were discussing anime. Shit was cash. I think I still have my Russian heavy tank models somewhere.

Anime is well and good, but anime has taken this weird turn like twenty years ago where everything has gone towards this whole trend of little girls.

Moe anime creeps me out on a couple of levels. The first being, how saccharine-sweet everyone is to one another. Western women don't act like that. At all. Anyone who does act like that, is doing precisely that: Putting on an act. And it's super annoying to watch. It's like watching some idiot girl you knew in elementary/middle school, suddenly adopting some stupid fake accent all through high school to appear cute/interesting. It's infuriating, it's fake as fuck, and there's always some motive behind it. Except in moe stuff, there is no motive behind it, it's just cutesy posturing for the sake of being cute, which makes the whole thing completely two-dimensional and completely unrelateable.

Because it's so unrelateable and outright fake, makes me think that everyone must be on some serious antidepressants, they're mentally disabled, or they're all aspiring serial killers trying to exploit others into letting their guards down by this fake cuteness, but anime isn't that clever. Especially not this kind of anime.

It genuinely creeps me out because guys are drawn into that fake cutesy crap, because they like having someone to protect, I get it. It wouldn't be so annoying if it wasn't so overt and constant. Also creeps me out because there's always that high-school/college story about that guy that watches moe stuff, and it's usually the weird, smelly fat kid in the back of the room who listens to his anime music while drawing naked fox girls or whatever.

Atop of it, it's just incredibly banal to watch. I honestly don't know how people can watch that kind of stuff and not feel completely bored. Had an ex who tried showing me Lucky Star a few years back, and I was bored out of my skull.
