Im not against it, but id be stuck doing machine translation or proofreading work since I can't really read moon runes. It's not a bad excuse to start practicing more though.

Remember to google for the Japanese title as well just in case the raws are on a Japanese website.

I can translate stuff every once in a while, thought not that consistently because of uni.

The difficulty with niche stuff like this is that it goes deeper than just a word or sentence here and there. Works based on niche subcultures or a series you are unfamiliar with are often so subtle with references that you may not even realize it's a reference, and you can interpret a sentence completely wrong because you don't get the joke. I've made mistakes like that even in series that aren't deep in the subculture the joke came from.

There's no way to translate the culture of honorifics, so they should be included in names. You'll just have to learn the meaning behind them just as if you went into Japan yourself. I'm shit at remembering names so I don't even notice name order.

It's kind of how people say "sorry to intrude" or "I am in your care", you should just learn to understand that about Japanese culture instead of trying to localize it.

As long as it doesn't change meaning too much, it's ok to change some things that can't be easily translated or understood without TL notes. Anything that CAN be translated should stay as they were.

They exist to be read so of course they should have a translation somewhere. No need to redraw them, a small text beside it is enough.

Only for things that can't be properly translated/localized, and can't be properly understood if you're not Japanese.

Always keep honorifics because there's too much meaning in them that you can't express in English accurately. I also suggest keeping name order as it is in Japanese just because you might end up screwing yourself if at some point in the translation if attention is drawn to how the names are ordered for some kind of wordplay or other gag if nothing else.

Never "Localize" unless the intent in the dialogue can be very easily expressed with an equivalent English phrase. This doesn't usually extend past things like set phrases and expressions.

Find a big pack of comic fonts on a torrent site and pick whatever you need from there. Most of them will be useless but you'll also get a decent variety of generic dialogue fonts to choose from and the odd goofy font for things like special effects.

>SFX translation

Personally I think translating these is just a huge pain in the ass, so if you're lazy like me and you can get away with it, like if the SFX aren't very prominent or relevant to what's going on, you can probably get away with not translating them.

>TL notes

Use them wherever necessary, for things that an average weeaboo for lack of a better term would be unfamiliar with. In anime subs it might be a bit harder to do since the timing and immersion can be hindered by them, but for manga there's no excuse to not have them. I think having an extra page at the end for TNs is a good way of going about it if you have a lot to say, and less distracting than having them between panels. Sometimes authors put their own comments in those places too, which might get confusing.

Literal, only localize sentences when there's a very close English equivalent that makes sense in the context. For example, there was some mango with a hourglass chick, the MC went full harem MC and said "don't stick your breasts where you're not wanted" which got translated to "don't butt in", which was fine since it meant the same thing and the previous panels had focused both on her big milk and huge ass.

Prefer side text saying "sfx: blah" over redrawing. Sometimes a sound effect is a good piece of art in its own right and it's sad to see it go. Plus, learning the hiragana, katakana, and cultural details required to make sense of them isn't onerous to ask of readers, I think.

The number one thing when reading a translation is how good the translator's ability is in English anyway, this extends to both their ability to express the content as close to the author's intent as possible and to writing in English without relying on cultural norms that they're personally used to. I'd generally prefer a slightly inaccurate translation that sounds like a group of characters actually holding a discussion than something strictly accurate that sounds like it was written by someone from a malaysian call center using a machine translator to write in English. A translation that isn't entirely literal doesn't need to be 'localised' by default, and a good translation will often eschew truly literal translation in favour of capturing intent, but it's a fine line to tread. Raws are still better in either case anyway

I'd say that's one where you have to decide who you want to translate for. Maybe add a TN for a broader audience but if it's something that's going to be viewed by people who know their shit it's probably best to not explain the reference.

No I don't mean notes explaining the joke or the meta-joke, I mean just whether you include the 'tl note: keikaku doori means just as planned' or not. As in, is it culturally significant enough among english-speaking enthusiasts to justify adding in a joke that wasn't explicitly in the original content. Of course, if a character says keikaku doori without it being a reference and the tl puts in a note for it, that's almost always in bad taste, but if the author was clearly making a reference to the death note scene, how acceptable is including the tl note meme specifically for that?

Honorifics are case dependent. Sometimes the english equivalent is feasible, sometimes its better to leave it in furigana. One shoe definitely does not fit all here. I'd say that might occasionally apply to name order as well, though in that case I'd be personally biased to keep them as written for majority of the time.

Literal without question. Foreign translators might not be able to catch all of the inside jokes and not all of the puns will translate smoothly into english, but its better to keep it as close to original as possible lest the result be some unholy abomination like whenever Nippon vidya gets "translated. Personally I might use english idiom instead of literal translation for the same meaning at most, and even then it would really depend on the context.

I'm crap at those, so if I were to translate something I wouldn't care too much about the font because other anons could just edit it into better-looking one if necessary. In case of manga I'm personally satisfied as long as its readable and does not take outrageous amount of space.

Personally I would leave the Japanese originals in place unless its absolutely crucial to translate them. Other anons might disagree, but I believe that translating them just isn't worth the time investment required for most of the time.

Mixed opinion, mainly thanks to the way they are used. I wouldn't mind leaving TL note in marginal when encountering puns, inside-jokes etc. that doesn't translate well into English. Other than that, making short glossary at end of the chapter with brief summary/explanation of some relevant Japanese events/terms might be cool as well. Attentionwhoring with pointless TL-notes just seems retarded to me.

As for honorifics, absolutely keep (unless it literally doesn't make sense in the context; e.g., in a hypothetical historical manga set in 17th century France, where two French characters are talking about a Frenchman). As for the name order, I'm partial to keeping it the Japanese way.

Well, this is a tough one. A short one, say, up to two lines of horizontal text, (such as one briefly explaining a wordplay, or a character talking in a certain dialect) is much better (in my opininon) if it's placed in the page's margin. But a longer one (such as when 'getting' a refrence requires giving a short introduction to a certain TV series or a historical character your average western reader is not likely to know of) is perhaps better kept in a separate, dedicated TN page at the end. But keep in mind not to clutter it with notes pointing out obvious shit the majority of your readers probably get.

But on the whole, literal as can be, keep the honorifics and name orders, and provide the TNs, if need be, preferrably in the margins.

No no, I meant that basically every time I see the death note reference I see the *keikaku means plan tl note, frankly I've never really had a problem with it but strictly speaking it's a meme that wasn't part of the author's original intent. Of course if the author is making a pop-culture reference anyway it's not exactly in bad taste to add the tl note. I was asking, mostly as a joke, what the opinion of people on this board was to adding in the tl note when the reference shows up.

I understand the sentiment, there are a lot of ideas and connotations given by honorifics that just don't translate well, but you do realize there are way more honorifics than just "kun", "chan", "san" and "sensei", right? Leaving every honorific in makes for very awkward reading, and being selective with which ones are left in and which ones are written out is usually done by lazy translators, partially because of how hard translating the idea the honorific is trying to pass is, and part for pandering (high school and MAL type weebs love seeing shit like "Sakura-chan" and so on on their translations).

Do you speak more than one language? Not trying to be mean or anything but literal translations can be fucking shit. Literal translations are frequently what beginners do when they don't understand the idea the foreign speaker is trying to pass.

Say someone speaking a foreign language says a proverb or a saying to two people who understand the language, and these people have to translate what was said to a third listener, who doesn't speak the language. One of the listeners is someone who just started learning it, and the other is fluent. The newbie will have to translate word for word in his head, and build a sentence with them, and end up with the literal translation, while the fluent speaker will understand the meaning of the proverb, he doesn't need to translate it in his head because he's fluent of course, and when relaying it to the third person he might go about it two ways: translating it literally and then explaining what it means (basically a TL note), or straight up giving the third party the intended meaning, a "localization". This is a very generic example and ultimately neither way of doing things are wrong, it's just very context dependent.

I agree. I guess I can sometimes give the literal meaning in a TL note and if there's need for more details/background I can go for a glossary at the end.
