The OVAs are some of the funniest episode in my opinion, and the LN isn't nearly as funny as the anime specifically because it lacks the visuals and fantastic performances. I'd say ever volume has a few funny moments, my favorite being volume 10(where they go to the casino), though I'd say the humor comes from the context or the situation the characters are in, and how they react to it. In volume 10, they go to another city, and as they explore the city some rich dudes say they would like to go out with the "beautiful ladies", the girls are flattered and think this will make Kazuma jealous, and he will treat them better, so as not to loose them to some random guys, Kazuma on the other hand knows that they will cause trouble for him, but if they were to go on a date with those guys, they would cause trouble for them, and they would be responsible, so he physically pushes the girls to the guys, and then runs, before they could change their minds, the girls are flabbergasted that he would dump them like that, and the dudes are a bit unsure if they made the right decision. Later in the evening we see the aftermath of the dates, and the girls describe to him what horrors they inflicted on the guys.
Of course someone could argue that this scene would be infinitely funnier if it were done by DEEN with the voice acting, sound effects/music and voice acting(but then almost anything could be better if properly animated), but considering there is no guarantee that they will ever do a season 3, let alone animate Volume 10, you might as well read them.

I finally got around to watching this and it was kind of boring. They're just dicking around in the same places and nothing happens. I would also consider Dante's Inferno as an Isekai, as it's about a guy who is in another world(hell), is helped by the gods(Virgil) and who had to defeat the Demon Lord(Lucifer). Some anon, in a previous thread sad the vikings also had a form of isekai with babies being stolen by "demons" and replaced with Doplelangers, though I don't think this really counts. You had a lot of reverse Isekais though, were gods decedent from the heavens into the world of humans, hell even the New Testament is all about that.

It's about elves/fairies/dwarves/gnomes/goblins/witches/whatever-the-locals-believe-in stealing away a baby and replacing it with a copy, the changeling. Overlord is filled with glaring inadequacies that make you think something along the lines of "this is an initiate writer who is writing his first book". Comparing him to old writers would put him on the lower end in a fair comparison, but these days someone who can put out consistent mediocrity is worthy of praise. I'd give it a 5/10 for mediocre with not many heavy flaws, I'm reading volume 9 right now myself and it's one of the LNs I'm catching up to so I can follow, but comparing to what is coming out nowadays it's on the higher end so 7/10 is more fitting. It certainly earned its spot as one of the more sold LNs in Japan, looking at the competition.
Overlord shoots in all directions. It's about the world, it's about generic isekai fantasies, it's about being on the lesser developed side of the isekai genre where the protagonist is the villain, it's about likeable characters, it's about heavy plot, it's about detailed descriptions of everything, it's about this new foe of the week that keeps things fresh, it's about character development, it's about comedy and whatever else I fail to name. And I rate everything acceptable, so I read it.
I think separating old from new is important because people have a tendency to look for things that are more relevant to the present day. It's why LNs are so attractive even though we have historical literature and supposedly most of it is better.
Konosuba on the other hand seems to be written by a smarter guy, he knows what his books are about and his own skills, so whatever he lacks doesn't hinder things too much. He knows it's all about the quality likeable girls he wrote, his sense of humor and the beautiful on the surface but darker at depth world. Most importantly the humour. Animes are always either about innocent protagonists in an innocent environment, or perverted protagonists in a perverted environment, but in konosuba we have this perverted protagonist in an innocent world that knows perversion, so I think it's original that way, at least nothing else in its genre does the same. Everything else that one may feel is obligatory in a book only appears to forward the clear objectives of konosuba. I rate it higher somewhere between 8/10 and 9/10 for the standards of today, for the past I don't know.
But this skeleton the stories have and you pointed out will be the downfall of things, either the writer is being malicious or he's falling to his own lack of experience and skill but if this gets worse that's what will kill konosuba, and if it's not solved then the series will instead fall to mediocrity.
