I took a look at one of the fight scenes and decided once again that the original FLCL was good enough/these sequels aren't worth watching. Half of the stuff I saw was pure "quality" and the other half that did look good was all mechanical/superficial, the sort of things that an art student would go "this is the correct way to draw this based on this design theory" without any thoughts into how to personalize it. I can get over it looking like modern Chink anime-design garbage which has spread through the industry but it has no soul to boot.

Definitely better than Alternative's first episode. Hits the same beats but adds a little something different between them. I guess this will be the trend to mimic the first episode if they continue to do more FLCL after these two come out. Did anyone find it weird that they used the word unisex? Was metrosexual too outdated? I'd cringe less if he said he wanted to live the trap lifestyle than say his cloths are unisex. Thinking a man wearing a skirt is weird is someone who hasn't seen scotland. They better not drop genderfluid into this or I'm dropping this shit.

It's for compression in martial arts. The ju-jitsu guys like it to prevent getting scraped up on the mats. The compression is used for muscle soreness recovery generally speaking.

No this one is actually worse. The first series was a bit of a fluke with how it turned out great. Each episode felt like the animators were just experimenting with what they could do with the animation while the director and series composer had a good idea of where everything would head. Progressive not only looks generic as fuck but they're trying really hard to make a deep plot and it's just not interesting at all.

Hated FLCL: Progressive. Felt like an unnecessary soulless cash-in sequel in the same vein as Adieu Galaxy Express 999 and the Rebuild Eva movies.

Went back and watched the original series to make sure I did not unwittingly have a pair of nostalgia goggles on so tight that they were cutting off the supply of blood to my brain. Almost 20 years old, and it has aged like fine wine:

-Characters that are fleshed out and worth caring about, lending itself to emotional investment and truly touching, affective, and memorable moments. In contrast, outside of maybe Haruka herself, Progressive has a mostly flat and forgettable cast, lending itself to an overall experience that left me feeling nothing.

-Much better soundtrack, and much better use of The Pillows.

-Despite being chaotic, eccentric and experimental, still has a plot and themes that can be reasonably followed and deciphered with attention and repeated viewings, in contrast to Progressive's sparsely explained nonsense, along with some blatantly lazily regurgitated elements.

-Despite going on 20 years: objectively overall superior animation, cinematography, character/creature/mecha design, experimental elements, and action choreography, to it's 2018 sequel.

I'm going to go ahead and watch Alternative out of morbid curiosity, but I predict that like the original Eva TV series and movies to the Rebuild Eva movies, I'm probably just gonna continue watching the original FLCL from time to time and pretend the sequels don't exist.

Just watched it all tonight. I didn't hate it like a lot of big fans of the original FLCL seemed to, but it's not like it was great or anything. It was just "fine". It was a quintessential 6/10 anime that is entertaining (and short) enough to watch in a single sitting, but certainly not something you'd ever wish to revisit.

I found myself thinking throughout the first few episodes, "this is just following the same narrative beats as the original", but then the actual plot turn into "this is just following the same narrative beats as the original". That would be fine if they'd been willing to actually DO anything with it, but instead they did...nothing. The series just ends in the exact same way as the original, but without any of the emotional attachment to the characters or what you've just viewed.

I have a feeling that Progressive's existence might be justified once Alternative is finished, and sew all of the storyline threads together (what happened to the characters from the original? Why was Canti still in town? How did Haruko get the same bass guitar that she left with Naota etc.), but at the moment I'm left feeling like there was no reason for this to have been made. It was a sequel in the same way that Jurassic World was a sequel. It felt like a remake that they simply didn;t want to label as such.

To further expand upon this, the idea of just doing the same beats as the previous entry/series or whatever can be interesting if done right, or for an actual reason. MGS2 is a good example, as a deconstruction of the typical sequel. Most sequels that do it just don't acknowledge that fact though, and are comfortable being the same thing but BIGGER (like Die Hard 2), so it was weird for the show to openly admit that it's a carbon copy of the original and then just keep copying it until the last second.

Yep. I'd hate this a lot less if it was such a blatant soulless cashgrab. I'd honestly be fine with it being merely mediocre 6/10 if it TRIED to do something. How did we get to a world where the sequel to FLCL is soulless? I'm not blaming it all on 9/11 but...

Maybe the idea is it's supposed to be about the meta-narrative of FLCL itself "growing up" by selling out. Ironic shitposting is still shitposting though.

Usually when something TRIES though, it doesn;t end up being medcocre. It ends up being "up and down", with all of the good shit being balanced out by aspects that didn't work. This show was a constant stream of benign OK-ness. There wasn't anything to get upset about, because the show would have been required to take some risks if it was really going to upset someone.

Yeah it kind of has that feeling to it, as does Alternative. Haruko as a character doesn't really have any influence on the actual protagonist, and is more of a vehicle to make Ko behave in certain ways. Compare this to the original, where Haruko was very clearly one of the three forces trying to pull Naota in different directions.
