It's a nice magical girl show. Of course it's still shoujo, so meant for little girls, and yes, it is going to be episodic a lot of times, but has some pretty nice developments later on, and just general charm to it.

Also I hope you're not watching 1. dubbed or 2. Crystal.

ps personally I loved the lewd loli, Chibiusa later on, one more thing that Crystal completely ruined by giving her stick limbs.

And speaking of old anime, Sailor Moon quality is atrocious. Galaxy Express 999, LoGH and original Gundam all have better quality and they are older.

I couldn't finish it. I got to the Sailor Saturn season like 150ish episodes in and just gave up because it literally is just a children's morning cartoon, monster-of-the-week trash show. The only redeemable quality is Usagi's seiyuu, and if you want that you'd watch Excel Saga instead.

That's primarily a Toei issue, as they have always been legendarily cheap niggers who threw out their original Cinetape audio which had higher fidelity than the optical film track that was used on re-runs and DVD releases of mostly their pre-1997 shows. DBZ is so far the only show to have its broadcast Japanese audio preserved and released after years of one fan hoarding it out of fear Toei would sue him.

See all of that is fine and funny for a regular 12 or 24 episode show, but when you drag it out season after season into the hundreds of episodes cheap humor like the kind Sailor Moon had gets fucking old. By the Sailor Saturn season they were trying to wring it back to something serious with the stupid future crystal city arc and it all just fell completely flat. It doesn't matter how hilarious it was when Kamen LARP'd as Aladdin for no fucking reason because this shit has been going on for 150+ episodes and there is never any progress. Sailor Moon was basically Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko.

There isn't any kind of end goal for any of the characters, the threats and villains are all disparate and vague, there's never any end in sight -- either good end or bad end. Nothing in any of the episodes has any consequences at all because it's just a monster-of-the-week show that got dragged out way longer than it should have for no other reason than to sell very cheap plastic toys to little girls.

I tried reading Sailor Moon a few months ago to see if it would be as entertaining as it was when I saw episodes on Toonami, but I found no redeeming qualities. It's just dress up meets monster of the week, but to be fair I can't find any shoujo I enjoy outside of K-ON.

It's pretty formulaic, but the characters, development, and panty shots makes it more worthwhile.

While you're right about those, I've found that nothing does emotional content quite like Sailor Moon. It goes from goofy shit straight to twisting a knife in your heart, making it have some of the best suffering and uplifting moments.

Junichi always targets the heart, in whatever he does and you can see his style in the current Precure where he's begun taking us for a ride.

This became the standard practice of all Sailor Moon seasons even after he left the series. It builds you up, breaks you down, and heals everything in the end.

Nothing does it like Sailor Moon because of the amount of time you spend with the girls, falling in love with them and having fun with them. The romantic scenes are much more fulfilling as a result, and the tragedy strikes so much more than your standard Princess Tutu or Madoka because you know what it's like having a SoL life with these girls and you feel with them when the big bad fucks it all up.

Quick Trivia: Takeuchi-hime wanted to kill off all her characters in dramatic ways at the end of the first arc like you see in the anime, but her editor wouldn't let her, saying that sort of thing shouldn't be in a shoujo manga. Later, when Junichi did the same thing she wanted to do, she got angry saying, "It was my idea first!"

The appeal of this show for me is the character designs and colors. 90s anime had so much range in what character designs were presented. Some were evolutions or carryovers from the 80s and some were those typical case examples of "bad" 90s deigns. Sailor Moon seemed to strive for something easy on the eyes and that makes it easy to look at. I would almost call it unique. The realistic proportions and right amounts of moe make it really appealing.

Except the english dub excerpts on that "sailor moon says" channel, those are fucking golden and mindbreak you if you watch enough of them in a row.

I watched it in German growing up and had my mind blown when I went to my Silesian friend who got some Polski sattelite thing taht merely talked over the original dub.

What I saw there blew my mind. Seeing the Actual Sailor Stars opening was about as powerful, if not more than seeing the Street Fighter 2 Victory intro for the first time, which was one of my earliest "clearly anime and in Japanese" things ever.

The most flashy stuff I've seen growing up was He Man, She-Ra etc, so seeing all those fucking animated special effects blew my mind, not to mention the super detailes characters, etc.'

That's what Takeuchi-hime thought as well due to the anime staff being all men. This lead to her "you do whatever and I'll focus on the manga" approach, making for a wide gap between the mediums.

I don't agree that the anime is totally shounen, though, because there are very shoujo aspects and it's still following the source material, however loosely.

Quick Trivia: While it's generally agreed that the manga is more shoujo than the anime, It was heavily implied by her manager during a 20th anniversary stream event (which you may or may not remember watching with /a/) when they announced the La Reconquista musical that her husband, Togashi, considered one of the best shounen mangaka, helped her with her deadlines.

No matter what, there will be shounen aspects to Sailor Moon. (Remember, too, that this was the first time Sentai was mixed with Mahou Shoujo, and Sentai is as shounen as you can get.) This makes the franchise a big gateway for boys to get into girly stuff.
