Ahh okay, I've noticed the subtitle thing and it bothered me a little bit but I generally don't skip around in anime so it was never a big deal for me. Maybe I'll switch to MPC or MPV I kow VLC isn't the greatest and I've just been using it since I've been too lazy to research a different media player and VLC has worked well enough so far

mpv has some nice features like scripting capabilities, but I agree that VLC works well enough. There are only a very small minority of videos where VLC has real playback issues, and a lot of the hate it gets is undeserved.

Issues like DRM on blueray disks are of much greater concern than your particular choice of media player.

I enjoy the user scripting and minimalistic design. The config file I find useful depending on if I want to watch a stream or a sharper image.

MPC-HC and madVR here. Using a damaged monitor.

SMPlayer. It's quite remarkable. Probably the best features of it are it's configurability regarding subs and audio, and that it remembers playback position of different files. While it is configurable, it doesn't react particularly well to MPV config file changes. Well it probably would if I didn't suck dicks.

This is a good point. Unless you've bought a top-of-the-range monitor and calibrated it properly, that's going to have a much bigger impact on your experience than your choice of media player or post-processing filters. Even the lighting in the room is likely to have a bigger impact.

The difference in the appearance of images between two different cheap monitors can be really significant, which is especially annoying when creating digital art.

I know from experience that I can get 1080p playback to work with zero issues in mpv using fairly low-end hardware (integrated graphics, budget CPU from a couple of years ago).

Graphics drivers can be shitty, especially some nvidia ones, but that isn't mpv's fault.

Not by much. The video is a bit blurrier than NGU Sharp, but it's good enough. Wouldn't switch to mpv from MPC-HC though.

MPC with the CCC pack. I've never really been too big on ricing my media player because I tend to read more manga than watch anime. I normally watch anime with Flux on because I did it by accident when watching Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul and wound up preferring to watch with the reddish tone. Virgin Soul fucking sucked.

Having used both VLC and mpv extensively, I can say with confidence that you're grossly exaggerating. VLC gives 99% as good picture quality 99% of the time. It isn't perfect, but it's a very long way from dogshit. If I were making comparisons, I'd reserve words like "dogshit" for genuinely awful media players like quicktime or the crappy proprietary software you get for free when you buy a webcam.

Honestly, VLC isn't that bad since the 3.0, but it's tarball is 25MB when mpv's is 3 while still not having stuff like advanced filters (ewa_lanczossharp for example), "smooth motion" or vapoursynth support.

mpv in general is less bloated and more configurable (via options or scripting).
