What program / app do you use to watch your animu?
For me it's MPC-HC. I previously used the Kawaii Codec Pack but found it was outdated since a few years ago and I'm too much of a brainlet to use mpv.

But even a tech-retard can use MPV on winblows by running it like you normally would anything else, instead of accessing it through the command line.
Just install a windows build ( https://mpv.srsfckn.biz/ ), open mpv.exe and drag&drop your animu directly onto the open window.
Read the manual that comes with it to learn the usefull hotkeys. "s - screenshot","shift+s - screenshot without subs", etc.

Any faggot can use mpv. I don't know why people think you need to be a techfag to know how to use it. Just use it as any other player. Set it as default and double click what you want to watch. It's not hard.
The only difference with mpc-hc being that it's more lightweight and uses different keys for things.
f=fullscreen
s=screenshot
S=screenshot without subs
,=back one frame
.=forward one frame
That's it. That's all you need to know. Everything else is just like mpc-hc but faster.

The problems I'm aware of are:
Slightly worse color reproduction/banding. (I've never noticed this)
Occasional video glitches when VLC misses an "I frame".

mpv has some nice features like scripting capabilities, but I agree that VLC works well enough. There are only a very small minority of videos where VLC has real playback issues, and a lot of the hate it gets is undeserved.
Issues like DRM on blueray disks are of much greater concern than your particular choice of media player.

>easy audio and subtitle selection and language priority can be set so you never hear dub even by accident

>configurable hotkeys
>screenshot filename customization and format selection
>remembers playback position of each file
>thumbnail generator
>audio emulation for instances of shitty audio track so you can just go stereo or even mono channels

This is a good point. Unless you've bought a top-of-the-range monitor and calibrated it properly, that's going to have a much bigger impact on your experience than your choice of media player or post-processing filters. Even the lighting in the room is likely to have a bigger impact.
The difference in the appearance of images between two different cheap monitors can be really significant, which is especially annoying when creating digital art.

As a great man once said, "NVIDIA, fuck you." But no they're pretty hostile to open source and only provide closed drivers, which generally don't match well to the kernel, and the way the open drivers do things. By far the worst I had to deal with was NVIDIA Optimus where you can't even use the NVIDIA card without some filthy hack-around. There is an open driver being pieced together but I have no idea how that's progressing.
I don't know how the situation is for AMD, apparently their closed drivers suck even worse than NVIDIA. Intel graphics generally work OK and have open drivers.
