I know I'm late to the party, but this is one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen. A heart wrenching tale of dying love, painful regrets, and the warm wonderment of childhood crushed by the cold melancholy of adulthood. Feels bad /a/, am I alone in feeling this way? Discuses...

Watch Garden of words

They should just rename it as: The fag who doesn't know how to use a mobile phone

I feel like Makoto Shinkai treats love not as a good or bad thing, just as something that people experience. In this case it was sad, but in the grand scheme the MC was a loser who couldn't get over a little girl who he had feelings for as a kid, so in retrospect I don't feel as bad for him.

I kinda feel that this movie is kind of overrated. It doesn't have any message and the only thing that really sets it apart from romance in other anime is that it's presented in a realistic way, which is actually far easier than writing a decent fiction.

People need to get over the idea that 'realistic' writing is some sort of achievement compared to a thoughtfully abstracted derivative of reality. Are Shakespeare's plays a realistic representation of interpersonal relationships? No, because he wasn't a hack writer.

In any other medium this story would have been considered mediocre trash, but because it's a little unconventional in anime it's lauded as the anime equivalent of the Mona Lisa.

Seriously, fuck this movie, fuck the stain it's left on anime and especially fuck everyone that uses it as an example of anime being 'art'.

He was a faggot who ruined his own life.

He had best girl all over him and he wouldn't stop being a faggot.

Now he's sad and alone while the rest of humanity presses on.

It's a cautionary tale. Don't turn out like him. Don't make me cry for you, too.

I agree with you, to me fiction is supposed to be escapism and creativity. But it's a fact that many people view capturing realistic human relationships as requiring skill. Entire genres depend on that public.

Nah 5cm/s is better than Garden of Words.

>shitting on 5cm/s because it is a realistic story

I think the word you are looking for is relatable. Not just in terms of romantic love either. If you can't understand why this movie is beloved by a bunch of social misanthropes, then you don't belong here. Not to mention its beautiful.

Also,

>It doesn't have any message and the only thing that really sets it apart from romance in other anime is that it's presented in a realistic way

is patently untrue.

One of my favorite movies of all time.

Not only am I a sucker for the extreme melancholy it sewed into me but I also found it extremely relatable to my own life (see: >>824312 ). It put a lot of things into perspective. Soaked my pillow in tears the night I watched it.

On top of it all, it was a beautiful movie to look at.

I still listen to One More Time, One More Chance quite often. I think I know the lyrics by heart now.

Admittedly this animu didn't do much for me until the very end. Not trying to be edgy it just didn't really click with me even though its kind of relatable.

It was so fucking dumb. Just go and fuck her already. All of the hang ups were personal and every choice to not have just gone to see her was his own fault. It's a couple hour train ride, not the other side of the fucking world. Stop being a sperg and just go talk to her. I have no pity for either of them.

Don't get me wrong, the music was great and the art was very well done. I just feel the cult jacking off of it is a bit strange. It left me feeling angry at the MCs lack of just fucking doing it.

>>824326

No, it's a realistic story, not a relatable one. I can't relate to it because I wouldn't have done what he's done (or not done) in his shoes, but it's typical for normalfags to ruin their lives with their own two hands through series of poor choices made for no reason, so I can accept it as a realistic story.

The fact that they both hook up with others later on further reinforces this. I don't know how either of the two characters are supposed to represent or even just speak to social misanthropes, at best the guy is the kind of /r9k/ poster that has had a dozen girlfriends, but he's a fellow loner too, because all those relationships just didn't feel right :'(.
