Good fucking riddance. Shit stopped being amusing after the anime adaptation came along where for some reason the manga had a drastic dip in quality. Never underestimate the power of adaptation. It's always had a horror edge that distinguished it from other shonen titles, but having great talent on the anime adaptation really elevated it to everything the normalfag could embrace while also scaring him from the milquetoast lineups he usually peruses. I would unironically look to the production staff for tips on how to make source material seem better than it actually is.

Has anybody brought up how the "Ackerman" backstory is completely, completely RETARDED and badly written? "Uh huh, how do we explain how Levi and Mikasa are adept at combat and related? Huh, huh, let's say they're part of an ancient bloodline where they're GENETICALLY ENGINEERED EXPERIMENTS THROUGH TITAN SCIENCE to be that awesome and skilled, AND THEY CAN'T BE BRAINWASHED BY THE STUPID MAGIC IN THE SETTING. And uh, and uh....fuck, I can't think up anything else, let's leave it at that and hope nobody notices." It's not even interesting or intriguing and Levi and Mikasa never ever end up having meaningful character interaction on this aspect.
If they actually go with this explanation in the anime I will laugh for eons.
Attack on Titan as a concept died the moment they actually had to explain where the Titans came from and it became another human-fighting-human-in-the-sandbox series instead of invoking the primal fear of being crushed between giant molars at any second.

I did once but it went unread. The minute you try and explain the "truth" behind your story/setting despite not needing it that much when the focus and central plot/characters are more important than the origin story will either break or make your shit. But even before that this story was already starting to break into pieces. Attack on fucking Nothing.

>Why do people actually like this shit anyway? I guess because it's basically zombies but with giants and people seem to like zombie fiction.
So it started out as giant zombies, especially in the anime which told things in a more chronological order. And it was really cool when you had that survival horror, fighting against all odds sort of story. The maneuver gear was awesome, some of the characters, while not anything deep, were bretty fun. And then the Titan Shifting happened. So things started going to shit. But the anime adaptation was really well done, so it sucked in lots of normalfags. And the Tumblrites discovered the series, and used it as their latest vehicle to escape the reality of how miserable their lives are.
So it developed a fanbase, and sold lots of discs. For the first season, at least; the second season had one of, perhaps the biggest, disc sale dropoffs of a second anime season in history. I haven't been keeping track of the manga sales, but the fanbase does seem to have dwindled, hype for the whole series died down, as the author continues to move the series away from what it initially was, what got it initially popular. Which I guess is the fate of all shounen series, but this one crashed and burned particularly quickly. The hype has died down and the ride should be over but it hasn't ended yet. I've heard the author actually had a totally different direction he wanted to take the series, much darker, ending it much sooner, but that the magazine intervened, and said "it's selling well, keep it going". It would seem a victim of its own success, the fate of many a popular series, alas. It really is too bad, as the initial premise was powerful, and now we're guaranteed to never get the same setting but with the story done right.

Yes, it was a random bullet by a two-bit character introduced late into the series. Sasha died as a sacrifice for the idiotic moral relativist theme of the author. Her corpse is his soapbox for why revenge begets revenge and it's bad.
>>823616
Reminder that you're completely wrong. The author intended to massacre literally the entire cast - everyone dead. Once the series got acclaim and fans flocked to it he wanted to give it a more "Guardians of the Galaxy" type of ending (his words), but then he watched a movie where a serial killer was portrayed with a boo hoo backstory and it reignited his moral relativism, so he set about changing his series into "revenge is an unending cycle" and "who is the real 'good guy' anymore?" theme.
What kept people around was, surprisingly, the characters. Killing them off means destroying the fanbase. Hopefully Sasha's pointless death helps kill the thing.
Though I wouldn't be surprised if it was a ruse and she was actually just fine. The mangaka wanted to test how far he could push it. Still, probably not since it'd ruin his little soapbox.
He wanted people to be struck and reflective but all he did was make people want to see kids tossed out a blimp to their deaths. Idiot doesn't know how human beings work.

I think it would have been much more interesting if the plot took a more conventional route and followed the progress of humanity slowly expanding and exploring a word that their ancestors ruled over. Moving around a deserted world to find small pockets of people and eventually linking up with them and through technology building a network of communication to push back against the titans. Realizing the hopelessness of how much ground they need to take back. Instead we get boring politics with a side of boring side characters that kill off good characters, and boring moral garbage. If it kept feelings of hopelessness and sense of smallness it could have been interesting at least.

I honestly would've preferred what I thought would be the original ending, where everyone dies at the end and get eaten by titans, with humanity having lost the struggle for survival only to reveal that some humans still live and will continue to fight when they are ready from their safe refuge or whatever the fuck. The moral garbage and WWII parallels are just irritating and bland, and the world building is even worse, but not as terrible as the writing got after titan shifting became a thing (which somehow got even worse when time travel memories became a thing).

To further spell it out for you: Sasha was murdered by the same kid she spared earlier on a few chapters back.
Gabby, this kid, wanted revenge on Erin and "the devils" for what happened during the national rally - where the nation declared OPEN WAR.
Erin responds to the OPEN DECLARATION OR WAR.
Somehow this means it's a cycle of revenge and his involvement of the team - who would have been involved anyway since it's an OPEN DECLARATION OF GENOCIDAL WAR - leads to Sasha's death.
Let's nevermind that Gabby, some kid, is able to headshot a guy zipping around like Spider-Man, somehow get his gear which didn't break on impact, somehow understands enough to utilize the maneuver gear despite never using it before (no training - hey, remember all those chapters where the characters had to learn how to use the gear and how Levi and Mikasa was special because they're Ackermans or whatever?), somehow zip her way up to a moving blimp a half mile off from her, somehow spin aboard and somehow get a steady-aimed shot into a group of people who are completely unaware despite currently escaping hostile territory.

I'd like to think he didn't, or maybe had a better direction to take it in. Maybe he was really good at horror and building up a sense of doom and mystery, but wanted to take the story in a direction that exceeded his abilities. Maybe it started off good because he was telling the sort of story he was good at telling, but was too ambitious, flew too close to the sun, and now, everyone's a titan in Jew and Nazi land.
