It's always had a horror edge that distinguished it from other shonen titles, but having great talent on the anime adaptation really elevated it to everything the normalfag could embrace while also scaring him from the milquetoast lineups he usually peruses. I did once but it went unread. The minute you try and explain the "truth" behind your story/setting despite not needing it that much when the focus and central plot/characters are more important than the origin story will either break or make your shit. But even before that this story was already starting to break into pieces. Attack on fucking Nothing.

So it started out as giant zombies, especially in the anime which told things in a more chronological order. And it was really cool when you had that survival horror, fighting against all odds sort of story. The maneuver gear was awesome, some of the characters, while not anything deep, were bretty fun. And then the Titan Shifting happened. So things started going to shit. But the anime adaptation was really well done, so it sucked in lots of normalfags. And the Tumblrites discovered the series, and used it as their latest vehicle to escape the reality of how miserable their lives are.

So it developed a fanbase, and sold lots of discs. For the first season, at least; the second season had one of, perhaps the biggest, disc sale dropoffs of a second anime season in history. I haven't been keeping track of the manga sales, but the fanbase does seem to have dwindled, hype for the whole series died down, as the author continues to move the series away from what it initially was, what got it initially popular. Which I guess is the fate of all shounen series, but this one crashed and burned particularly quickly. The hype has died down and the ride should be over but it hasn't ended yet. I've heard the author actually had a totally different direction he wanted to take the series, much darker, ending it much sooner, but that the magazine intervened, and said "it's selling well, keep it going". It would seem a victim of its own success, the fate of many a popular series, alas. It really is too bad, as the initial premise was powerful, and now we're guaranteed to never get the same setting but with the story done right.

I think it would have been much more interesting if the plot took a more conventional route and followed the progress of humanity slowly expanding and exploring a word that their ancestors ruled over. Moving around a deserted world to find small pockets of people and eventually linking up with them and through technology building a network of communication to push back against the titans. Realizing the hopelessness of how much ground they need to take back. Instead we get boring politics with a side of boring side characters that kill off good characters, and boring moral garbage. If it kept feelings of hopelessness and sense of smallness it could have been interesting at least.

I dropped this manga way back when they said they were going to go back and see what's in Eren's dad's attic and then proceeded to bumble about and not go there. Then part of the attic reveal just ended up being the twist from The Village. Is it still worth picking up?

I honestly would've preferred what I thought would be the original ending, where everyone dies at the end and get eaten by titans, with humanity having lost the struggle for survival only to reveal that some humans still live and will continue to fight when they are ready from their safe refuge or whatever the fuck. The moral garbage and WWII parallels are just irritating and bland, and the world building is even worse, but not as terrible as the writing got after titan shifting became a thing (which somehow got even worse when time travel memories became a thing).

The art was awkward and amateurish and the story was classic mystery box bullshit that fans excused because they were too dazzled by the ridiculous, intense OP music and the few moments of super high quality animation. The manga got popular, the execs said "draw it out as long as you can". We'll never know what the author's original intent was. Maybe he had the whole "Jews and Nazis" thing planned from the start. I'd like to think he didn't, or maybe had a better direction to take it in. Maybe he was really good at horror and building up a sense of doom and mystery, but wanted to take the story in a direction that exceeded his abilities. Maybe it started off good because he was telling the sort of story he was good at telling, but was too ambitious, flew too close to the sun, and now, everyone's a titan in Jew and Nazi land.
