Anyone else watching the weird dragon vore-yogurt advertisement-JSDF propaganda? I'm surprised to see there hasn't been a thread here yet after two episodes but I'm sure some people are checking it out.
I'm not sure about anything that's going on in this fucking show. I can't grasp the tone they're going for but there are parts about it that are pretty entertaining if not flat out weird. What do you think so far? I personally like the ED a lot and the show can be very pretty at times.

Hardly. Having them ride on the dragons back wouldn't make sense in the airplane-dragon analogy. The dragon eating is treated as comedic as well and adds a strong uniqueness to the story that makes it stand out from similar stories.

Well, the first episode was great. Especially for us anons in the Air Force
It got the new Airman in their first duty assignment feeling down pat. Also the feeling of the Air Force in general.
>I can't do this!
Girl, you don't get to choose. The military puts you where it wants you, even if you're just volunteered against your will to do it. When a superior asks if you want to do something, you say "Yes."
In fact, sometimes they even approach you and say, "The answer to this next question will be 'yes', do you understand?" or "The next words out of your lips will be 'yes', is that understood?" or something along those lines before they ask if you want to volunteer for something.
>assignment was changed without permission
see above
>Even my term was extended
HOLD THE FUCKING PHONE. That right there is something else and I totally back Hisone here. The only thing some of us Airmen have to look forward to is the end of our contract
>Calling out bully on not being in regs
New Airman all the way. Straight out of basic. That's funny. Especially funny considering she's way more in regs than Hisone, who has those side bang things. All the hair should be in a bun away from the face.
>Personality Issues, can't keep from saying everything on her mind so she decides to be quiet.
This is a problem in the military. You should be able to speak when things are wrong, but you can't do it in the military. You will get punished. You're not paid to think and anytime they say, "Please talk to us if you have a problem. We need to hear from you, and find solutions to any problems you have with things." It's a trick. Never approach them. Never tell the emperor he has no clothes. Everything is fine, especially when it's not.
I'm the same way as her and got paperwork because I had to open my mouth once.

Just finished the first episode. I was pleasantly surprised about a lot of it. The pacing was brisk and didn't beat around the fact that it's about dragons or that the military treats it like just another AJSDF operation. I also really like that the main character is timid, but capable of standing up for herself. A shittier series would have had her shoved around for half the season before she developed enough backbone to speak up. The style of it all is unique, but it's pleasant because the characters are so dynamic and active in their movements and expressions. The gentle color palette helps too.
Like the other anons, I have no idea what to expect, but I want to see where this goes.

I don't know. I would have liked to see more of her being a repressed blabbermouth. I hope we don't see a different personality next episode because of it.
And yeah, the fact that the AF treats it as another operation is great. I wish we got to see more of Hosone in her camo, but it looks like now that she's joined flight line, everyone's going to be wearing flight gear instead.

Alright, feel free to MUAAH to your heart's content but they made a rather critical mistake in their subtitling.
So, Le Temps de la Rentrée is a France Gall song that's about a school girl who's really fucking glad the summer break is close to over because she can finally be with her boyfriend at school. The lynchpin verse of the song is "Moi, j'aimerai toujours, amenant mon amour, le temps de la rentrée". There's no real way to naturally translate this in english since it's awkward as fuck in french to begin with, but it essentially means "I'll always love the day we go back to school because it will bring my sweetheart".
Now, the problem is that, rather than "amenant", which means bring towards you, the ED subtitled "emmenant", which means bring to another place. That right there is a prime example of a simple mistake in wording going against the meaning of the entire piece.

Those are Flight Suits. It's what everyone has to wear in the Air Force when working on the flight line, which means around the actual air crafts.
The camo uniform she was wearing in the beginning of episode one and what the other characters are wearing in the chow hall scene was the usual attire for the majority of the ASDF, and this is the common way of things the world over. Someone in the staff really knows their military.

>boring lecture and fighting to stay awake
Amazing. This is all of basic, tech school, and a lot of operational AF. Learning to stay awake during "Death by Powerpoint" is a skill you must master if you are to be in the AF. That Airman beside you nudging you awake before the instructor notices is a godsend. This is how we look after each other.
>Cleaning the rust from your equipment every three days due to high humidity
HAHAHA, this is most of your AF life. Right there. This is great.
>Security Forces useless as always

>She steals an officer's bike
Okay, this just makes me wonder why the hell they choose Enlisted members, one step above slick-sleeve for that matter, for a super secret Dragon Vore project. Every regular pilot is an Officer in the 3D AF, and they seem pretty jaded about it, too. I hope we get a reason for it soon.
Also, all these Officers are really high rank. Usually they should be spread around across more bases, but theres just way too many Lt. Col. and above consolidated in this one base.

It wouldn't help organization at all to have higher ranked Officers stationed there.
The one thing I can think of is that because they "know too much", they are never stationed elsewhere, so they spend their entire career there, but even so, there's usually a quota for how many X ranked Officers are in each base. They normally wouldn't rank up unless there's a spot for it at the base.
We should be seeing Lieutenants just coming in like Hosone, and those guys moving on. It's not like Intelligence Officers and the like don't already have Top ++++ Secret clearance and can't speak about their jobs anyway.

I kind of got that impression too. I think the reason might be that the artstyle and setting are pretty different compared to most anime, and the frogs are the only people who produce proper animation so it kind of makes you think of them by default when it doesn't fit into the anime mold.
Though that's only on the surface level. The actual animation and writing are still very Japanese.

I will say she does seem to be missing the key factor that D-Pilots are working with intelligent, living creatures. The whole military schtick is a form of disguise for the dragons, and she's got that down pat. But in doing so, she's gonna have to fix her perspective towards the dragons.
That said, she seems like the only one who isn't bumbling around like this is some high school club.

The only reason she's remotely interested in being a D-Pilot is because she cannot become a normal fighter pilot (at least that is what I gathered from her exposition about being the first female fighter pilot. Flying a fighter jet seems to be path of least resistance, so being a D-pilot must be her only path). She will definately have to stop being so self absorbed and meet the dragon, and her fellow d-pilots, half way.

Doesn't follow direct orders because of her personal ego problems, makes her dragon suffer, nearly fucks up the entire D-Pilot program which is clearly of national significance and highly top secret, then cries when people tell her to stop treating the living creature that picked her for such an important assignment like a mindless object.

She's worst girl now , but it's likely the setup of a character arc. Besides, it's rather clear the higher-ups set her up to have her big tantrum. I mean, it was still a huge fuckup, but some kind of shock had to happen for her to connect with her dragon. The higher ups couldn't have her keep up her denial but still kinda hanging in there. Something had to give, because the endgame here isn't maintenance or hiding and shit, it's complete bonding with the OTFs, which may or may not be sinister. Thus, the tantrum had to happen.
Besides, look at it this way.

It's not that they don't want her, it's that her aptitude isn't high enough to fly planes. Almost no women can actually fly military aircraft whatsoever. Only a handful of countries have successful trained female pilots, and plenty of first world countries have 0 female pilots.
More likely, she's upset because she's not good enough to be a pilot and this is a humiliating second place prize to her.

Pilots are expensive, and since men tend to score higher on the intelligence and physical exams it's probably more cost effective to get a man over a woman.

Why is Nao even around? She doesn't have an OTF, and Masotan is offended at the mere thought of having her pilot in place of Hisone, so she'll never be able to work as a reserve pilot. So that means that she's been in the D program for longer than Hisone while being completely incapable of doing anything. Now Hisone's here and the D program is back in action, but she's still around despite having literally nothing to offer to the team. I could buy it if she was just a bad pilot and was getting special treatment for her mother's service, but she's beyond useless, she eats rations and takes up space in the barracks that could be given to someone who's actually capable of participating in the unit.

I guess their purpose is to bring good luck and wealth to a country since they are mythical beasts and explained in ep1. Hisone has been called the choosen "miku" when she discovered Masotan name.
In that case OTFs are barely flying charms with girl priests inside.

It's true that the part of the flesh closest to the skin of fruits usually has the most nutrients and by extension sugars, but I don't think there's a single fruit where the actual skin itself is sweeter than the flesh, that is if you can truly seperate the skin from the flesh. My issue with eating kiwi skin is that unless you're growing the fruits yourself you can be assured they're covered in all sorts of horrible grime from the handling, packaging and distribution they go through, and there's no way to really wash them with how the hairs go.

Who knows what they can really do? they don't seem to obey any physical laws so far as the stomach cockpit and feats of contortion for the camouflage go, or to combine those two and wonder how the smaller dragons manage to make enough room in their stomachs for the pilots to fit while also squishing themselves into their plane camo Plus, that one time his one kicked masotan during the airshow masotan pulled some pretty radical maneuvers, I'm sure there's something they could manage if they needed to.

That is what we see almost every time there is a "dragon rider" trope in any fantasy setting. A guy sitting on top of a dragon and controlling it like an airplane.
I find the insider (vored) pilot more interesting as it gives the pilot a much better protection from outer threats.
But I have another question in mind. The fancy hi-tech helmet seems to project a full VR image of the outher sourrounding area out of the dragon.
How in the hell did old time pilots (even just few generations back) managed to have a look out of the dripping interiors of the dragon belly and... pilot?

Like another Anon said previously they don't seem to have any means of attack and even if they did, using them in combat would immediately blow the lid on the whole keeping the mythical monsters a secret thing since the enemy would find out about it, so why are they even under the military's control? Why aren't they being tended to by some secret society of dragon keepers? Why even keep them a secret when every random soldier who happens to be at the right air base just knows about them? They mentioned in the first or second episode that the dragons need to fly to burn off energy or they become deeply ill and the country regards them as divine bringers of prosperity and peace, so they have to keep the dragons happy. Flying them around as jets under the guise of normal training and drills lets the dragons fly around, keeps them happy and healthy, and is presumably good for the country.. We're still not entirely sure what all the shady whispering and secret meetings are about, nor do we understand the cryptic hints they've been dropping, but it seems to imply that there's a purpose between bonding a pilot and dragon, beyond simply tending to its need to fly.

Magic. Theres already dragons masquerading around as planes, talk about chosen dragon mikos and the odd shrine with wall paintings. Everything related to piloting a dragon will probably be explained by calling it magic.

It is true. As someone who spoke a Latin language natively, I can attest to how easy learning Nip has come for me as opposed to English-only acquaintances who struggle wrapping their tongue around the most basic Nip words (especially when it comes to pronouncing the "R's"). Conversely, like Yuropoors, Nips have one hell of time wrapping their minds around such sounds as "th".
There's also the matter that, like Latin-derived languages, Nip is read almost exactly the way it is written as opposed to English where learning the lawlessness of pronouncing each word is the biggest challenge.

Yeah, it's not like French has any silent consonants. Let's look at a line from the ED song:
>Je ne pensais sur les rochers et les plages ensoleillées
Je , ne , and sur are all pronounced the way they're spelled. Only 70% of the words in the sentence differ significantly between spelling and pronunciation.

>Why do they need to break their hearts for the ritual? Why do they need to be prepared to fall asleep inside their OTFs?
Being awake three days straight and piloting is basically impossible so they need to be completely in synch with the OTF to be able to sleep and fly, having a love life fucks that up so it was necessary to keep them loveless until the ritual is over.
They lost another pilot of Masotan already to marriage three years ago while the ritual was close. They can't afford to lose one of the pilots when the ritual is months away.

Yeah. It's all down hill form here, isn't it?
The easy-going and charming atmosphere we've become accustomed to thus far feels like it stands to lead into untold pain. This could be especially effective due to how likable and "warm" the cast of OTF pilots is; They're all innocent angels. If anything should happen the suffering will be amplified.

>The real ritual is human sacrifice
That'd be exactly why they're keeping Nao around. Why else would she even be informed of all this crap? She's the fifth sacrifice for the giant dragon.
This also means the only reason the granny is still around is because the last ritual failed. She fucked up and survived when she wasn't meant too. I bet they'll even imply Japan lost WW2 due to the ritual failing. The writers chose to make the last ritual 74 years ago for a damn reason.
