In an alternate universe, the adventures of Weird McKid and his psychopathic puzzle Mindrape Man became the biggest hippest trend. Kids would run around setting up excessively complicated games that invariably end in physical agony (instead of just playing cards like lamers).

In an alternate universe, Dark Bakura's game, Monster World, would've gotten all the popularity, not Duel Monsters, and the market for Japanese RPG miniatures and War-Games would've boomed during the 90's, and /tg/ would've reigned supreme, forcing WoTC and GW to innovate to compete with their Japanese rivals, resulting in better, more original RPGs and cheaper miniatures across the board.

I still find it weird that they added that other girl for the anime. Especially since she didn't have anything to do, so they had to write in extra stuff that wasn't in the manga.

Yeah, she was perfect for both Yugis. It's a real shame they had to change the entire voice cast for the Gallop anime, the guy they got for Yugi is terrible. The fucker can't stop screaming for five seconds. Hell, even Dan Green was a better fit.

YuGiOh as a franchise got ruined sometime around the end of GX (the card game introduced shitty novel summons, OP cards, game-breaking strategies, etc).
5D's is just another step deep in the hole regarding that.
Anime-wise, the original Yu-Gi-Oh! was better than most of their genre and time, but it was still bad. Many people (me included) loved it and still like it because it was just so cool and profoundly affected us.
Now, we're living in a time where e-sports such as Dota are worldwide famous, why hasn't someone invented fucking holographic arenas/duel disks already? If the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game rebooted and featured holograms, with sound speakers (everything high-quality, please, no bullshit toy-level stuff), I think it would become popular again and even surpass its golden age, maybe even become an e-sport or something.

At this point, you'd either get a VR Yugioh with a Duel Disk Peripheral, or you could easily simulate 3d Holograms with 4 projectors shining on a glass pyramid.
The problem there is really the payoff relative to the investment, but /tg/ can explain that better than I can.

As a game it was always kind of broken, some of the best cards I can think of come from the first era of cards (pot of greed for example). Syncro's that came out of 5D's was more interesting to me than the fusions introduced around GX. I will never forgive Judai for leaving his EH's for the Neos deck I will also never forgive Konami for making the Neo-Spacians so shit.

I think Augmented Reality like Google Glasses or Pokemon GO would be more accessible(cheaper) and easier to make, it would also mean that you could "duel" on the street or in school. The technology does exist(vid related), but it would probably take about 5-10 years before we can get a fully fledged card game that looks good in AR.

I unironically liked 5Ds. The whole dystopia thing, with the city getting fucked by tech trying to harness power it probably shouldn't to power everything, and then the king of hell himself coming to crush your shit, felt like a modern take on the whole ancient evils + Zorc schtick from the first season. Plus it turns out card games on motorcycles was pretty fun. GX was kind of a mess though, and I like to pretend Zexal doesn't exist. PLAY RAIDRAPTORS.

>only 4Kids dub
You are missing out. They cut out so much shit, whole episodes, because localization and people thinking seeing a gun-monster in a cartoon will turn kids into murderers. With 5Ds you missed the entire series finale and the dub changed characters' personalities a lot. Ruka/Luna is a lot more reserved and tolerant of her brother's rambunctiousness, and Aki/Akiza isn't obnoxious and gives you a feel that she really wants help. Crow is still a bro, though. That's a universal constant.

I heard that the first chapter of the Duel Masters manga had them play Magic the Gathering then never talked about it ever again. Yu-Gi-Oh the manga started 1996. Konami's Yu-Gi-Oh OCG started at 1999. MtG came out 1993. What have you done 3 years? I honestly don't mind if they have an over the top story about TCGs. I just wish the duels aren't so clearly bullshit. The series never recovered from the asspull nature of season 1. At school when the show was still airing, people genuinely thought the game was played the same way as the show. Also, why was Copycat a dark attribute in the show but a light attribute in the game?

It may have just been a mistake, they change it back to light in the later shows.

For what it's worth, the anime came before the rules were established so it was often more about making a spectacle over being logical. In fact the first duel of the game is won because the blue eyes Kaiba was using was stolen from Yugi's grandpa and thus didn't recognize him as its' master and destroyed itself. I don't recall it being mentioned in the anime version but this was the reason why he destroyed it in episode 1 of the second anime.

>The bullshit moved from cards just not following the rules at all (the duel with catapult turtle and the castle of dark illusions) to special anime cards and effects.
The duels in Yu-Gi-Oh! would always be asspulls; but at least now, they pretend to play by the rules. The card game in the show wasn't realistically playable on a table but in-universe it was. If Exodia was your trump card, wouldn't make more sense to have search cards to draw it out? I don't care if they say the cards fell out of the sky from another dimension or something just make the duels not bullshit.

A reimagining of the series where the characters have good, functional decks could be pretty cool. Yugi's grandpa's deck with a lot of search and draw, Kaiba playing a modern Blue Eyes deck, Pegasus with modern toon cards.

No.822190
>>822189
Characters can still have their theme decks, I don't see why that's a problem. But they can have theme decks but still have decks that make sense. Weevil can have a bug deck that has something decent instead of the shitty moths.
Also in an anime they can make stage whatever the fuck they want for duels. I'm not a huge fan of the state YGO is in now, but someone who knows the game could script some duels that are back and forth and interesting.
