If that's autism, it's fairly low-spectrum autism, but fairly high-grade GAD. It's fairly obvious that the main thing getting in his way socially is his own anxiety, and he's found ways of coping with it via art and drawing.

Nagatoro, obviously, finds him interesting because he's good at what he does, but moreso because he's a nice guy compared to the guys she hangs out with, as seen in that earlier chapter. Senpai is just a tad to self-conscious to realize that Nagatoro's bullying is as much her enjoying having control over a situation with a guy that isn't brazen and overconfident as it is her enjoying his reactions.

However, this is having the adverse effect of desensitizing Sempai to bullying situations and building his confidence a bit. The first seeds of which we see in this latest chapter, that little outburst of "I'm not her boyfriend!"

At the same time, Nagatoro is getting accustomed and familiar with Senpai, which is the "familiarity breeds fondness" that is key to the -dere romance genre. By the time Senpai is confident enough to overcome the brunt Nagatoro's bullying, Nagatoro will have become too attached to him for it not to turn romantic.

It was good that he was established to be pathetic from the onset, though. Clearly Nanashi knew what he was doing since it's like you said.

Although I wouldn't say "slightly more likable" is the only addition to Neo-Nagatoro. She's very clearly undergoing her own far more subtle character arc despite Senpai being essentially stagnant as a person. It's from this arc that we see not only more of her possessiveness but also more of her insecurities. Those little sweat drops here and there, the careful attention to when she's blushing and how furiously, etc. My favorite aspect of MengaNaga as opposed to the ShortNaga is that in the manga we see how, despite being this devilish "bully", she's actually nervous herself plenty of times, and yet if Senpai was the kind of guy to take advantage of this and turn the tables she would go stone and drop him flat.

It's also curious how she's trying to man him up while enjoying the sight of him squirm. This change in her way of bullying, from outright searing mockery to more playful (yet constant) harassment was excellently contrasted in chapter 11 where we basically see Nagatoro confront herself through her friend as a proxy. In the beginning she really liked breaking him down until he cried, yet now she prefers to play and occasionally build him up instead - which is what happens when this kind of "I like her so I put gum in her hair" mentality starts to grow up. Slowly. Very, very slowly. This reflection was a great milestone. I'm just concerned about how soon it happened.

Ch.11 is pretty early for this kind of development in Nagatoro and I'm worried it would lead to Nanashi having to reel it back to keep things going without speeding towards the inevitable conclusion so soon, and often to backpeddle character development an author uses some kind of trauma or asinine, inane and pointless conflict which damages the relationship for no reason. I don't even know how that would work here, though. Maybe Nagatoro getting teased by her friends so she gets harsher with Senpai? Maybe Senpai trying too hard and starting to seem like those lame dudes she turned down in the cafe? I don't know. Don't like it.

Genuine cruelty vs playful cruelty. It's like you said, but I think the trade-off was worth it since Senpai is also partially an audience stand-in (like the husband from that titty monster wife manga). He'll develop more as she does, or so it should go. He's just an intensely late bloomer.

Clearly Nagatoro has fallen in love with senpai, and senpai is manning up little by little, but even if you take that into consideration the latest chapter still feels very off. For the first time Nagatoro actively bullies senpai in front of her friends. In the first chapter there was a brief scene where she was just waiting for her friends to leave just so she could bully him without anyone bothering.

Why would her friends (and since pigtails is there as well I am assuming they are the same friends) not care now all of a sudden? Was this bullying not a secret the whole time? Did she tell all her friends about it? Wouldn't they think it's strange for her to be spending entire afternoons with that stranger just to bully him a little? Especially the swimsuit stuff and all that, she could not possibly tell anyone without getting bullied herself.

The whole implementation of her friends is also kind of retarded. They are just suddenly there, and in less than a page we are supposed to learn that dark hair likes to bully harder than Nagatoro, while pigtails would like to touch too?

This is because there is a clear distinction between Nagatoro's love for Senpai, and the nature of females in a group. Not exactly. She still bullies senpai a little, but their relation seems to have stalled. Previously every little jab at senpai was to find out more about him. She made him reenact the manga scene to figure out if he would actually act like he envisioned he would in his works. She forced him to draw her to gauge his skill. She made him get his phone from her pocket to see if he was afraid of physical contact. She "fake" confessed to him to see how he would react to being in a relationship. She took his manga from him to see what he was interested in. In c6 she toys around with him far more than usual. Instead of "accidental" sexual contact she literally gets on top of him to open his shirt, and in the chapter after that we learn that she dooesn't bully anyone like she does bully him. Her intentions are obvious to the reader now.

The washing hands thing is just her toying with his insecurities. In c8 her facade slips a bit, but it's no real bullying, and she isn't digging any deeper either.

The valentine's specials are literally non-canon, so let's ignore that one. It wouldn't make sense in the story either way.

c9 is just a dream, and while we do learn a little about senpai's secret desires it's no real bullying either.

c10 is just her trying to build him up a little, and get praises while she does. However she does accidentally go a little too far. His humanity and his hair (being called a sheep and having ugly fluffy hair) are obviously something he doesn't like to be bullied about, but instead of abusing this newly found weakness she even protects him in c11, where pigtails tries to touch his hair and darkhair wants to put him even below the level of a pet.

Sure it's a love story, and her character is developing from being a mere bully to being his quasi girlfriend/bully. But in the past few chapters we haven't learned anything new about her character, besides that she is very playful around him all of a sudden and growing more protective of him, while senpai turns out to be just a pair of pants for any otaku reader to self insert, which is very amusing to me, see the first chapter where she makes fun of self-insert otaku fantasies is not a good way to steer an interesting story towards, because it removes character progression for senpai.

I simply hope these changes in character get used to develop the story further instead of to milk a cashcow.
