The episode was calm, the girls got used to the ship and trained to get fit.
I loved how they tried to compete with the other expedition members and finally got over their sea sickness.
The scene during the storm was one of my favorite scences from the series.

An unsung sysadmin spent his weekends maintaining servers, checking backups, shouting at ISPs and probably ignored Exchange licensing restrictions for this.
This is data that no user cared about for three years. A mailbox of a dead person. And you didn't lose a single mail. Whoever you are, you're my hero, sorayori-sysadmin-kun!

I mean, we all knew it was coming, right? We all knew that her mother was going to be there, "waiting." But holy shit... this whole episode was a crescendo of pain and depression and it left me in a pool of tears and snot.
I can't call it AOTS, but it has been a good show and absolutely worth it for this episode alone.

Wow, it's over.
I thought Yuru Camp was a better show and yet I have so much more to write and think about at the end of Sora Yori.
Shirase's acceptance of her mother's death and all the events that ultimately led her to "a place further than the universe" ended up being reconciled by A MOTHER FUCKING HAIR CUT. Absolute bullshit of the highest magnitude. Shirase was best girl all along with the best kind of autism and Madhouse decided to shit all over her character at the very end.
Truthfully, there was no way episode 13 could match the emotional nuke that episode 12 delivered. I feel like Sora Yori would have been a better show if it ended back then, actually.
The perfect ending should have been long-haired Shirase spilling all her spaghetti in the midst of a group of stinky pengi.
I also drew parallels between the girls' unbending desire to reach Nankyoku and what it's like going to Nippon.

Each of the girls got what they wanted and had their character arc so it is fundamentally done. They would have to be brought together with some kind of new problem for a new season, but it would most likely never feel as emotional as this.

>Episode 12/13
Now that its been a week, the emotional scars from last week have healed and I can finally post about this story. First of all, this wins the (1 cour) season. Nothing else has the story, characters, and writing of this one. Colors will be second. Slow start will be third. Yurucamp will be fourth. Ryuuou fifth. After that its all the same average stuff.
The whole point of episode 12 was finding Shirase's mother in some form. It was going to hurt to some degree. The first 11 episodes, rather the road to getting there, was what made it hurt so much. It was one of the most painful scenes to watch that you know was coming for 12 weeks but didn't really know how bad it was going to be until it arrived.
The whole point of episode 13 was the one scene where she gave back the laptop. The speech was just a speech, exemption of the change from "okaasan" to "hahaue", but giving back her mothers laptop and the attached picture made it clear Shirase has finally reached the end of one journey in her life and is ready to set that aside to begin another. Hence hair cutting, and the hair was left in Antarctica too. The mail with the aurora picture could have easily been more crying which would have suggested Shirase was not ready to move on but she didn't cry. Thats as good of an ending as you can get with this kind of story.
I forgot Megu even existed. Since she is in the Arctic, I wonder if they are leaving the door open for a season 2. I hope season 2 does not happen though. There is no way you can come up with another story to the (other) end of the world that will best watching this the first time. Hopefully if season 2 does happen it is simply cute girls traveling the world and leaves the drama behind. This production team can do cute girls doing cute things really well and we saw that in this show so let them really work their magic on a story with that as the focus.

I may be alone on this but I think the last episode lacked a lot. Not a good last episode. Episode 12 was a lot better and should have been used as the season finisher with the laptop scene, made me tear up. I don't know if this is a great show but its AOTS probably.

I agree with you that ep13 was lacking, but I feel like it was the perfect closure to any loose ends. Episode 12 feels like it was the end of the character arcs while ep13 is the end of the story.

It's pretty standard for the last episode to not be the most impactful but to just clean things up.
In the last episode Shirase left her hair, her laptop and her money behind and could deal with getting her mom's last email without breaking down, and even the other girls got something too (Yu and accepting her idol status a little bit more, Kimari with her small going home, going their way but still being together thing, I think just Hinata didn't get anything extra).
I personally think it would have fucking sucked if the anime had just ended with episode 12's emotional nuke. They had to go back home at the end.

Seems like a "rite of passage" or symbolic act of rebirth/beginning a new era of life (in Japanese).
In American culture, it's when a girl gets raped for the first time and turns into a bulldyke.

I'm a slowfag just got around to marathoning the series. It was a great show I can't say if it is my aots yet (as i have only watched Yuru Camp and Crybaby so far), but certainly not my aoty. I wasn't expecting this to be an emotional show at all until i started actually watching it and learned Shirase's motivation was her moms death and wasn't just some adventure wackadoo fun time.
I cried quite a bit during the show it touched me especially since I know the pain of losing your mother. I don't have much more to say, other anons already said pretty much exactly how i feel about it so no need for repeats. Its a great show and I'm glad i watched it, but i think it is gonna be another never watch again like Welcome to the NHK because it is just too emotional for me and i just don't like feeling that way.
Yuzuki is best girl followed extremely closely by Hinata. Shirase is great but just not my type and i can't stand Mari she is a shit with a bad haircut.

Just finished this. Loved it. Retrospective AoTS for me for sure. The pacing was perfect and that laptop scene was perfect in its own way. I thought it portrayed this kind of grief very accurately, especially in the way that it doesn't "get better" but life just somehow keeps moving. The way the writing combined naive optimism with slow wisdom was just absolutely lovely.
I looked up the sales figures and it turns out that Volume 1 of the BluRay sold over 10,000 so it ended up making a decent return. I'm so relieved.

What was like a cloud again? I forget.
And yeah, I was just thinking about this show this morning. It's probably going to become a cl/a/ssic in time. It's so well put together it's practically a perfect show.
Not a whole lot of "adventure" anime really asks what it means to be on an adventure like this does, and many "coming-of-age" type shows don't acknowledge the journey the characters went through. This show was made with lots of care to understand these aspects.
Also, outcast girls joining together to do something amazing is a great premise. And it doesn't shy away from showing why they were outcasts in the first place. Their flaws are ever present and integral parts of their characters. It isn't something to overcome, but transform as they grow. You got to really get to know these characters as a result, unlike most anime.
It was an amazing show and I hope more people watch it. Glad to see it sold well enough.
