A cowardly character could work, if he at least had some agency. He never tried to convince Ratel not to participate, he never studied the map they were going to fight on, he never tried to train Ratel in any way, or device strategies or anything. Did the author really think it was a good idea to have 12 volumes of near-nonstop combat after 2 volumes of lackluster characterization? I hardly cared for any of the numerous stupid plot twists. The only thing that really irritated me was when the main girl suddenly started crying. I thought about it and then I realized that I couldn't actually remember her personality or whether crying was in line with had previously been established about her. It's not though.

Zaibatsu were the all powerful family-controlled corporation of the Meiji era owned largely by previous era noble families with strict vertical hierarchies (continental colonization was largely a way for the Emperor to dilute the Zaibatsu power by creating new ones).

And all powerful in the sense they had their own political parties (which were the only parties), as in they literally owned them, they collected taxes for the government, they largely had their "own" military units (the famous Satsuma rebellion was largely put down by troops payed by Mitsubishi for example) which is also why Imperial indoctrination got so strong, to curb the Zaibatsu power and make sure the emperor was still governing and not them, etc...

Keiretsu is the modern word for conglomerate, which are publicly traded (not family owned) horizontal (not vertical, multiple companies have multiple participation in each other instead of the one on top owns the two bellow, etc...) "normal" conglomerates.

Most Zaibatsu were disbanded by the US military government after WWII, those that survived are still very much a state within the state (but they even them call themselves Keiretsu and aren't family owned. In theory at least).

It's not a weeb thing, it's an economy one. There isn't a good translation in English for Zaibatsu because that system was largely unique to Japan and largely a continuation of the Japanese feudal system with only a couple exceptions here or there in modern western history (in Italy/Germany mostly) structure-wise, but none that really had that kind of power.

The closest western companies with similar power to a Zaibatsu were the East Indian Companies, but none were family owned (and the way they were formed, through hundreds of shareholders, became the basis of the modern shareholding system and largely the model for democracy. Well, let me put it like this.

In a battle royale a lot of the fun comes from seeing who knocks out who and how. Even if we have a main character who we know will win it all in the end, it's still interesting to see how the other conflicts pan out, and killing bites did this well. Ratel's fights were nice too, in a shonen kind of way. We basically know she's going to win eventually but the trajectory so far has been good, with every conflict so far being different.

Or maybe I just think it's good because the last 2 battle royales I watched were DBS and juuni taisen which are complete shit.
