I read Devilman so long ago that I forgot everything that happens in it besides the beginning with the sex party and the end with him and god sitting in a destroyed world.

After reading Devilman I also read a bunch of other Go Nagai works and most of them were honestly pretty ass. I suppose this happens with most people with production as huge as his. Most of his good stuff is super well known, a lot of his lesser known things are total shit.

I just watched Crybaby today. I liked the additional plot stuff to explain the seemingly random scenes in the original manga, like the modeling set up leading into the bath monster and the leading up to the relationship between Selene and Amon. Nu-Miki was good but I still prefer the feisty original Miki. My favorite addition was actually seeing between Akira and Satan, instead of just the ending monologue. Overall I think the storytelling was better than the original, but watching the overall darkening of the tone felt much more satisfying in the manga. Crybaby did feel like a fantastic entry to the series.

Is crybaby any good?

I personally had a huge issue with Crybaby's intense focus on sex compared to the original manga, but those weren't issues. Overall, if you're interested, go for it; I personally enjoyed it since it did some interesting things to the flow of the original story, but don't expect it to be a faithful adaptation of the manga. It has a lot of changes that are either hit or miss.

If anything, the OST is fucking gold.

I really hated that they changed the ending from Satan realizing that he was a huge hypocrite for doing to humans the same thing as God did to demons and genuinely repenting for his actions before God sends his judgement on him to Satan actually realizing he loved Akira all this time and despairing at how his actions led to this conclusion.

I love the original manga, but I feel its pacing is super wonky.

I'd say start with the Devilman manga. Maybe watch the OVAs before reading it. I think the beginning of the first OVA is one of the best horror anime in general, it feels almost like some cosmic horror story. You can then go straight to Devilman Lady if you want but I'd say you should read Mao Dante and Dante Shinkyoku (the later being the actual Divine Comedy drawn by Nagai) if you want to enjoy it fully.

The anime for Mao Dante and Devilman Lady aren't that good. The former is enjoyable in a kinda cheap trashy way, the later suffes from character re-designs, re-writings and an "anime original ending". It's kind of a poster child for what was wrong with late 90s/early 2000 anime.

All the bonus stories and crossovers are optional. I'm not sure if I even read all of them.

I started with the anime New Getter Robo and Getter Robo Armageddon. I think they are a pretty good introduction, just work your way from there if you want to get more.

You only really need to read the original 1972 manga, other stuff aren't really important. It's not very long, only five volumes and you can breeze through it in a day.

Lady has its moments for those who read the original, and has a few interesting new things, but it's mostly an exposé of Nagai's fetishes. Read if you enjoy watching muscular hairy women suffer and get raped every page.

So I read Getter Robo Go and I have no Idea why it ended like that and so abruptly. Does anyone have a history on the making of the manga that explains why?

I finished reading what I could read of Violence Jack

So Violence Jack is Akira and Ryo and Miki are the dog people in that universe.I understand Ryo being incarnated as punishment since he is satan who turned away from God but what is the importance of Ryo and Miki?Why are they there to be resurrected? Why does Ryo always have a positive opinion on Akira? Why is Akira being a good guy but is built like what the bad guys are like (huge mad max dude and 2nd in command Demon)? Why does Miki have to suffer like she does?
