I thought it was really sad. Mind you, it was a different kind of sadness than what I imagined when reading about it beforehand; Some kind of bitter-sweetness nostalgia and broken hopes and dreams that come with adulthood after lady life takes you out and opens your eyes to what a cruel bitch she is. It was like that whole experience of being a kid with stars in your eyes and growing up to be a bitter and jaded wageslave condensed in one short movie. But I suppose what strikes each of us as "sad" is a very personal and relative thing that changes significantly based on our own life experiences.

I didn't think this movie was perfect by any means, but I really liked it for what it was. I thought the landscapes were beautiful and the mood they conveyed seemed vivid. And this one fucking song still gets to me to this day.

This is a movie most people either love or hate. You either relate and sympathize to the protagonist's situation, or you don't and will think it's "gay".

It's a film for an older audience, mainly people in their late 20s or 30s who had similar experiences.

Personally it hit very close to home for me since I've experienced an almost identical situation in my life.

Story aside, the visuals literally hurt my eyes. I had to take a brake every 15 minutes so my eyes could rest.
