Please refrain from posting spoilers, i'd like for people to experience this anime on their own skin.
That said, if you really have to, discuss plot with the spoiler feature.
If you didn't see the show do yourself a favour and do that before posting here, you have been warned.
With that said DAT FUCKING ENDING. I had to fight the urge to cry and i still shed some tears. Just thinking about it makes my eyes a bit moist.
I also can't shake the "Hunter x Hunter" vibe this anime gives me in all of its core components: from the childish desire for adventure and exploration, to the quest to find your parents, to the curiosity to learn about all the secrets this world has to offer just to be faced with terrible odds and truths you didn't want to know.

First 9 episodes were really not that good in my opinion, then the rest were fun to watch. This manga/show would really benefit from exploring the layers themselves more, instead of focusing on character drama. Did we really need so much sentimentality from Ozen's trap maid?It felt really underwhelming up until Orby-chan. I went in hoping it would be like Hunter x Hunter, but HxH hit the ground running, whereas this show took a while to rev up and right when it was finally getting good, it ended.

With Nanachi's description of the abyss forcefield and how it works, couldn't you just ascend extremely slowly?
You're affected if you climb 10 meters in one go, because you poke through the field at that point. It can no longer bend around you. But does it relax after a while and allow more ascension? Or you can NEVER climb more than 10 meters above your lowest point? (Assuming you're in 6)
The fluidity she describes leads me to believe you could do 10 meters, wait a day or so, do another 10, etc. and never feel the effects.

The HxH parallels only heighten when you realize that Reg's seiyuu is the same as Killua. It becomes pretty obvious with his singing voice, but somehow it took until the last episode before I noticed.
I had a moment of insanity that nearly resulted in laughing myself into a heart attack, imagining Reg AS Killua, and of course this means that genki-girl (who is much tougher than she looks) Riko is Biscuit, which leaves Nanachi as Gon, who of course is carrying around Mitty which is actually the partially-melted yet still-alive HEAD OF KITE.
I'm not sure if this makes me a horrible person.
As for the series, it hurts that it's already over. Every couple of days, I suddenly have a longing feeling to want to watch another episode, and have to be disappointed that there aren't any, and probably never will be, (and even if there were, as I have now read the manga it won't be as enjoyable). It's by far my favorite anime that I've seen in YEARS. It gave me that extremely rare feeling where I became obsessed with it, think about it all the time, and couldn't get enough. Basically, the white whistles are made from a human sacrifice. I also glossed over exactly what caused it or where it formed, but because Prapushka wanted to go with loli and Reg so badly, she created the white stone after liquification. Now theyre in Narahate Village it can be made into a White Whistle.

There's also some element where the sacrificed person has to be emotionally attached to the person who then "receives" the white whistle, and that is why it only works for one person; that part was what didn't make much sense to me. I suppose it was just because Prushka really, really wanted to go traveling with Riko, that it overrode her undying devotion to Bestdad. But that being said, why doesn't Bestdad have like fifty fucking white whistles from all the cartridges of devoted children he's sacrificed?
The method where the white whistles are carved from their raw form is also weird, because Narehate Village is in level 6, so nobody should be able to return alive from there.

Japan has a gender-neutral pronoun on top of the normal male and female ones. It gets a lot of use when a character is of unknown or undetermined gender. However, one could say Nanachi is either, because they're not human at all and in fact not truly a member of any given species. For all we know they have flower genetalia.
The assumption is female due to the sack-cloth dress she wore as a human, but given their background it could easily have been a matter of convenience and they could have been male. So who knows?

This is ironic, because Pitou is canonically male in the manga, but for some reason Madhouse decided to give him a pronounced bust and make it more ambiguous. But at least here it makes sense; they're all weird hybrid creatures, so Pitou could have been made from a male cat and a female human, or vice-versa.
I find this is sort of the case with Made in Abyss, too. In the manga, there's no implication that Marulk is actually a boy (that I can find), but the anime calls it out explicitly by having Reg mention it.

Even when your dick is completely flaccid, it stands at an angle. Now matter how hard you try to fight it, your pee comes out at an angle, following a parabolic curve, not a straight line downwards. In fact, trying to hold back makes it shoot out in gushes with possibly more pressure than it would otherwise. Plus, your dick is in the middle of your legs. Even if you manage to pee approximately downwards, it's not going to land on your leg.
>>754075 's explanation is much more plausible. That is, assuming he has a dick at all

In any case, I'm going with Occam's Razor, here. There's a whole bunch of myriad and convoluted reasons how Maruruk could be a boy and the pee could be made to be dripping down his legs instead of shooting out (chastity cage?); but there is no explanation required for where the pee is going (and why Maruruk has budding breasts) if she's a girl. The best lewd is the scarce, tasteful kind in an otherwise non-pornographic work. It's enhanced by your pre-existing love of the characters, it's drawn by good artists who are perfectly capable of drawing pages of nudity, but don't because they have respect for themselves and their work, and it leaves you wanting more but not starved. Ozen explained in passing that traveling through the Abyss and undergoing the "loss of humanity" caused deformations in her scalp, which is why she styles her hair that way. Don't know how they handled it in the Anime, but in the Manga, Ozen's body seems to have a certain malleability to it, changing and growing to fit her mood.
It's not been well explained, but for some of the White Whistles, it seems like it's a one way trip. They are revered for their skills and abilities, and the treasures they wield may grant them a certain amount of immunity to the curse, but once they go far enough down, that's it. There's no going back up.
Maybe it will make more sense once we meet Srajo and Wakuna, but their descent past the 5th layer into the 6th was regarded as their "Last Dive" meaning that most White Whistles seem to fuck around in the 5th layer and slowly come and go for a while, trying to find the really good Artifacts before they fuck off forever, hopefully finding some means of ending the curse of the Abyss.

Yeah, once you become a White Whistle, you aren't really fully human anymore. Bone Daddy takes it to the logical extreme, but there are elements in this sort of thing in everyone. I can only hope Riko actually does meet her mother someday so she can be completely mindbroken by seeing what kind of eldritch abomination Lyza has transformed into.

For all of the white whistles it seems to be a one way trip, is it ever implied that any of the white whistles made it back up from the 6th layer? (Aside of worst dad of course but I'll get to that in a second)
Ozen kept saying that past the 6th layer is a one way trip, her scars on her head don't seem to be a reaction to the 6th layers curse but the 5th layer's. A part of the 5th layer's curse is self harming and hallucinations. Which is why I think that its likelier that in one of Ozen's early dives to the 5th layer she inflicted massive injuries to her head on herself. Which require the weird hair to cover it up In the flashback with Lyza when explaining it she says deep within it the abyss creeps into your mind, eventually it gets your body as well. You can interpret this as her describing the 5th then 6th layers' curses or you can read it as the creeping into the mind part causing the phyisical part as well.
With Worst Dad it seems like in his fight with Reg that's the first time he goes down to the 6th layer. After he comes back up and recieves the blessing he says something along the lines of "so this is the blessing" or something to that effect. Implying that he's never experienced it before. Why else would he be experimenting so much and turning so many kids into narihates if he didn't yet have a guarenteed way of defeating the 6th layer's curse. That was the whole point of that. Even he calls a trip to the 6th later the last dive. I'm positive that the 5th layer is as far as white whistles go until they eventually get bored and yearn to see the 6th layer.

I think Ozen's maleability is more of an artistic representation of her intimidating presence and the fluidity in the way she moves. Not an actual phyisical trait

Several possibilities exist for the Mitty we've seen. The first being that it is the real Mitty and Reg's Incinerator doesn't work the way we think it does. Majikajya had no reason or way to know who Mitty was... Unless the town and the whole "value" thing gives long-time occupants the ability to discern what people value by peering into their minds. Meaning the second option is that it's some illusory version of mitty created by the town to trap you with your own desires. Nanachi did warn that the lower layers were completely full of beasts that could read thoughts/intent, after all.

There's also the secret 3rd option: Reg completely disintegrating Mitty did not kill her, but only destroyed the device Bondrewd was using to monitor her life signs. If this is true then it could lead to two interesting possibilities: 1. complete incineration "purified" Mitty and she reforms into the blessed Mitty we see in >>755401. If this is the case then she could follow our heros and eventually catch up to them for a fun reveal. Alternatively, she simply reforms in her old state or some new form and is waiting for Nanachi to return at the old hut, giving Nanachi a reason for wanting to return from the bottom of the Abyss. This came to mind because I feel that a "return from the Abyss" arc is inevitable, and each character will probably have their own reasons for wanting to return.

I don't think Reg was always Reg, but Reg has inscribed the name into his soul/made it a part of his value, so Faputa can't tell the difference and doesn't know if he was actually Reg or not beforehand since she was reading his very essence and his essence itself hadn't changed.

Maybe it's the strength of a thousand men like how light works on a logarithmic scale? I mean a fluorescent light tube is ~240 times brighter than a candle and the sun is ~3-4x brighter than a fluorescent tube light on the earth's surface, but because we process light logarithmicly, it's not significantly brighter if you were to "turn each on" in a dark room. Similarly compared to a single man Ozen's strength is 1,000 times as powerful, but compared to 100 men it's only 10 time as powerful.
No.758470
>>758469
Er, that is to say, if Ozen's strength is the equivalency to 120,000 men, then in reality her strength exponentially decays as compared to the number of men her strength is equivalent to similar to how sunlight isn't that much brighter than a well-lit room, but sunlight is much, much brighter compared to a dark room or candle-lit room. You don't process the voices of 100 men as being 100x louder than the voice of 1 men since sound also expands logarithmicly, even though "technically" it's 100x as powerful.

To be completely honest "strength" is a rather meaningless measurement for the amount of power a character has. Take something really simple: a punch. Well, since force equals mass times acceleration, just having stronger muscles doesn't mean you punch harder. That is either a function of the mass of the arm, or the speed of the punch. Given that Ozen doesn't break the floor where she walks, she can't really have any additional mass behind her body, so all that is left is speed. A professional boxer can punch with a speed of about 25-30mph, and you can pretty much half that for an average person; which means that in order to have the "strength" of MERELY 1,000 men, Ozen would be punching with the speed of mach 20. Her fists would be igniting the air in front of them into blinding plasma, and hitting with the force of missiles.
Anyway, how I guessed it, (besides that the "1000 men" thing is an absurd overstatement) was that the pins actually have a deleterious effect on her body and health and so each subsequent pin has a diminishing return over the one before it, as more and more they are compensating for the damage the ones before are causing, rather than adding any additional strength but if she doesn't keep gathering more the ones she already has will kill her. This would fit in with the nature of a lot of the other abyss artifacts, as being double-edged swords.
No.758526

But anon, you are forgetting about inner strength/energy/chi/qi. It's a thing that many classic martial artists still believe in, and if it's actually true(it probably is in some degree) we can speculate that the pins increase her inner strength, rather than making her heavier or faster. Plus this is a universe with talking a robot that can shoot lasers out of his hand, so it's not all that preposterous.

Nothing in this series has been plausible so far. And if you want shit to make sense, "radiation that is harmless no matter how close you get to it, UNTIL you try to move farther away" makes even less sense than magic. If your story/world is pure fantasy, you can make whatever rules you want and as long as the events in your story don't contradict each other or the rules you made, the reader will believe it. But if you bring in something that exists in real life, people will expect the rules that thing follows IRL to apply here too.

>Technology vs. magic
I'd like to point out that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. The lost civilization has been shown to have been extremely advanced, so essentially the author can still do whatever he wants and pass it off as advanced technology. It's kinda like Star Wars, as dumb as that sounds, where a lot of the tech in there is absolutely impossible with actual science, but it's supposed to be super duper advanced so it can still be passed off as technology rather than magic. Also, we are excluding the possibility of magic AS technology here. We have seen the surface tech and it definitely doesn't look like ours, which means that this world may function under slightly different laws where certain things we would see as magic are entirely practical and scientific to them.
>It'd be different if you were still surrounded by air.
Actually no, decompression sickness would still occur if you tried to ascend extremely rapidly in a hypothetical giant hole, however it would take a lot more depth than in the ocean to achieve the same results. Water is a helluva lot more dense than our normal atmosphere. This is why, in real life, spacecraft reuse it rather than lug around huge water tanks along with LOX and LN2 tanks for breathing. It doesn't matter what medium you're in, simply the pressure and how quickly it changes. Alexei Leonov got decompression sickness when he vented his EVA suit in orbit (which was a legitimately good idea at the time I swear), so you definitely don't need water for that.

There still hasn't been any further mention of the birthday sickness or what causes it. It's almost as if it's been forgotten.

I think it was possible to treat cases as long as they didn't go back to the mold infested houses, but I'm not sure. The only solution I can think of for this mystery disease becoming immediately fatal on a specific date is because it's an 'intelligent' virus that operates on the hosts biological clock or some shit.
>>759678
That's a fun theory, especially since people have played with the idea of using black holes in generators before. So the abyss could have been the result of a containment field collapse, and whatever energies from that field might have an adverse effect on biology. The only thing is that gravity doesn't really explain the layers that Nanachi can see, or why they seem to disappear the further you are from the Abyss.
Ultimately though, I think it would be better if the 'Magic vs Technology' debate was left unresolved, as it has been so far, if only so we can jerk off to our shitty theories.

The manga clearly explains that the 'curse' of the Abyss is a naturally occurring force field, of sorts, which naturally draws light and moisture and life giving energy down into the lower layers of the Abyss to nurture the life within it. It's definitely more on the magical side, as it reacts to thought and intent, as evidence by the way the curse manifests and how it can be circumvented through especially strong desires... or even human shielding.

Well, the thing is Bondrewd's methods of using human cartridges to absorb curse effects are entirely based on science. That's kind of his thing.
As for the rest, gravity bends light, so... yeah. The entire tone of the series is more science fiction than science fantasy; less Star Wars and more Star Trek. That may change in the future, as either Srajo or Wakuna may be more like mages whereas Bondrewd is a scientist, but as of now there is no evidence of "magic" in the abyss. "Supernatural" things, sure, but that just means "that which science doesn't (yet) understand".

To be precise to the point of being pedantic, the pick didn't have infinite gunpowder; Lyza added the gunpowder to it, transforming it into a WEAPON, because that's just the kind of person she is. I suppose willful violation of Conservation of Mass is a bit magical, though there are ways around this (some kind of teleportation? it's not actually gunpowder?)

Also, was it that Lyza added an artifact to a pick in order to make it a weapon, or was it that she uses the pick that had an artifact attached to it as a weapon?

the problem is that there aren't any holes deep enough or any method of ascent in a hole fast enough to cause it currently, so as far as I know there really isn't a more applicable example than that. I've heard that some pilots have gotten it while ascending rapidly in unpressurized aircraft, but that's about it. I use that example because it shows that all you need is a rapid pressure change. Also because it's a cool story on it's own, arguably the coolest individual story of the Soviet space program.

I'm fairly content in calling the central theme of Made in Abyss to be, "Define Acceptable Losses". Absolutely every interaction is colored by a character sacrificing. Lyza left Riko for the bell. Riko left her world for her mother. Maruruk disobeyed orders and was punished for trying to help, and was even called out as having done the right thing for it by his punisher, and the main two then left him to continue. Riko tells Reg to make the most painful possible amputation in the hopes of retaining at least a stump below the elbow. Nanachi's experiment was playing with the mitigation of loss to render out and obtain the gain. BestDad's entire schtick is making others pay for his gain, in various ways: he inverts the trope and is the villain for it. Nanachi had to give up all hope of regaining her best friend to allow them both to continue on, somewhere or another. The White Whistles themselves are obtained by sacrifice. AnCap Village as a whole is a literal metaphysical manifestation of the trading of value.
The ultimate question of the Abyss is, "What are you willing to lose to keep moving forward?" I hope I don't have to point out how an overbearing reality, both in theme and practically, is that there is no going back. Keep pushing forward, through anything.
>>759855
I think it was mentioned that it was always intended to explode, but it was designed to use single-use gunpowder charges and it was intended for use on cavern walls. Lyza went full playercharacterplans.jpg and put the unlimited explosive in it and started hitting monsters with it instead. Or maybe she was already hitting things with the single use charges and later upgraded to Peace Phobia.

Which I don't even understand why since a black hole only a couple millimeters long would be enough to absorb the entire solar system into it. I don't even understand how a black hole theory works for the abyss. Shit, a Kugelblitz would make more sense and that would require about 1/10th of the light produced during the big bang great stretch-expansion to even form.

>Kugelblitz
That is an awesome phenomenon I didn't know the name for. Thank you.
Also, I doubt it's a literal black hole. There is definitely something 'wrong', not just dangerous about it. It produces reliable patterns of instantaneous mutation, for one. Even if you could get near enough to a black hole to be irradiated by it, it's not going to turn you furry and grow you a tail. You'll just die from spectacular cancer formation and possibly just immolate.
Whatever's down there is definitely sucking in everything it can get, but last I checked black holes don't create semi-gaseous spiritual mediums through which monsters can see the future and dying lolis can contact eachother through fever dreams. There's got to be some kind of collective unconscious thing going on at minimum, if it's not a full blown soul network like the Lifestream or something.

A black hole with an event horizon a few millimetres in radius would only have a mass comparable to the Earth. If one magically appeared in the centre of the Earth, an observer on Mars would barely notice.
It wouldn't work as an explanation for the Abyss anyway, since a black hole's gravity is still just gravity. The scaling doesn't work to have the time dilation we see in lower layers while not having anything noticeable on the surface. And then there's the fact that people in the Abyss don't feel dramatically heavier as they descend, which is such an obvious disqualifier I'm surprised this theory came up at all.
A "Kugelblitz" has exactly the same problems and even less to recommend it, since at least we observe black holes to exist in the real universe.

>Even if you could get near enough to a black hole to be irradiated by it, it's not going to turn you furry and grow you a tail. You'll just die from spectacular cancer formation and possibly just immolate.
Black holes don't produce radiation like that. That's part of what makes them black. No, Hawking radiation is not relevant.
What does produce plenty of radiation near black holes is accretion, but if you had enough matter accreting for it to be noticeable, there wouldn't be a planet left for very long.

No, nuclear radiation won't turn you into a furry, even if you're lucky, nor can it make eternal life, unless you believe cancer can be symbiotic. If you look at the Abyss map, you can see the magic is more eldritch in origin, and the force field is more akin to a Junji Ito style trap than modern science.

Nuclear radiation/leukemia can't kill you on your birthday every time, nor does it go away the moment you step off.

>Magic can in fact be science, if its laws can be decoded
Exactly this. The thing that makes magic be magic, narratively speaking, is that nobody understands what they are doing. They have a magic wand, they recite the spell, and stuff happens. They don't know how the wand works; they don't know what the spell is for or how it affects things; they don't even know where the "energy" that powers the magic even COMES FROM. They just know that it works. A big part of magic is tapping into energy from some great beyond using symbols or objects or phrases that don't actually TOUCH the source.
In a sci-fi setting, there are explanations for things and people understand them. They may be able to do "magical" things like teleport, but there are at least attempts to recognize the fundamental laws of physics involved with this. If there is some vast energy being tapped to power these reactions, it will be firmly grounded by actual physical objects. Star Trek does have a supernatural power source in dilithium, but in order to use it they have to mine it, refine it, and put it inside a complicated nuclear-reactor-esque machine.
But there can still be overlap, especially in anime that don't adhere to "genre" as much as Western media does. FullMetal Alchemist is a good example of a series that PRESENTS itself as based around science, but is actually more like magic. Except for a bare few, the alchemists don't know how anything works. They know how to draw the circles, and they know that it makes stuff happen. But they don't know what the circles are for, and they certainly don't know where the energy powering transmutations comes from. There doesn't seem to be much of an attempt to understand it, either, because people who dig too deeply (for example human transmutation or philosopher stones) tend to have REALLY BAD SHIT happen to them.
But as for MiA, it's more science because Bondrewd uses machines and objects to experiment with the Curse of the Abyss. It would have been more magic if he'd sat Mitty and Nanachi onto some kind of fancy alter with arcane symbols written on it, and started the test by reciting a phrase in some dead language. But he didn't do that, he used an elevator with some tubes and wires. We might not know how the Curse works, but HE certainly does.

>Star Trek does have a supernatural power source in dilithium
Dilithium isn't a power source.
The actual power comes from matter-antimatter reactions, and in Trek lore dilithium doesn't react with antimatter like most matter does because of a peculiarity in its crystal structure, so it's used as a flow regulator and containment system.
