Just read through the neon genesis evangelion manga. It just seems a bit inferior to the original tv show + movie ending. Is there any point in watching rebuild? Also Rei best girl

Only if you're the type for whom later entries in a series don't ruin retroactively what came before.

Wait on watching the rebuilds until 4.0 comes out.

>Is there any point in watching rebuild?

Yes, it's very pretty. The battles in the first two movies are objectively superior to those in the anime for budget and timing reasons. Just don't bother with trying to figure out the plot, or care about the characters and how assassinated they are, and CERTAINLY don't even think about watching 3.0. I'm convinced that, as some kind of bizarre meta aspect, Anno made 3.0 in such a way so the viewer is as confused about shit as Shinji is, and it is otherwise a complete parody of NGE as a whole. More meaningless arcane terminology, more Impacts, more silly Eva transformations, more OP Angels, more Lances of Longinus (and Cassius), more Shinji being a whiny bitch, more Asuka being a cold mean bitch, more Rei being an emotionless doll, more Mari being a pointless Mari Sue, more Kaworu being a faggot who died for our sins, more Gendo plotting, more Fuyutski being depressed, more kids being kids just for the sake of being kids, more death and suffering and sadness and madness and mindfucks and conspiracies and keikaku and everything is completely incomprehensible the entire time, and not in a fun way.

>>748350

4.0 doesn't exist and will never exist. It's Anno's ultimate and hopefully final "FUCK YOU!" to his own fanbase.

Until his death you should always expect more tricks from Anno.

 No.748448

The anime itself was shit, but the things that make it interesting are from watching a show run out of budget while the director has an emotional breakdown while still having to fill another 120 minutes or so of TV. Not sure why reading the manga would give you anything of what made Evangelion good.

 No.748464

>>748448

The entire show was made on a shoestring budget; it's completely obvious from the earliest episodes. While famous for its static shots, NGE is also rife with minutes-long shots of unmoving characters being slid across a background while the VAs bandy dialogue without their mouths moving. Even so, the cinematography was creative and excellent, and what little animation there is, is extremely competent. It's like an NES game, where the limitations of the hardware forced the creators to do fancy things to get around them.

The problem most people have is when they take the technobabble nonsense plot too seriously instead of just shoving it aside as background noise; NGE is a character-driven story, and the characters are complex and nuanced and realistic, and change over time — something that Rebuild completely abandoned because it was abridging everything. If you can't see anything beyond "it's shit" and "lol those last two episodes, amirite?" I feel sorry for you.

No matter what he does Anno cant win. Wouldnt it be better if he just accepted that?

 No.748514

>>748464

Except Evangelion was clearly an action series for the first 13 or so episodes, with a psychological bent. There was a clear demarcation line where it became heavily character driven because they realized how fast they were using their money. And even then, the only reason NGE is really all that interesting is *because* they ran out of money, and had to make the last few episodes do "the thing."

 No.748580

>>748514

But even in those first episodes, it was often very slow-paced with a lot of dialogue. It's not like they were coming up with it by the seat of their pants every single week; there was a whole script and everything. Rather famously, the entire battle between Asuka and the MP Evas was storyboarded (and shown in the teasers for ep. 24) but then had to be pushed back until End because it was just too complex (to say nothing of the budget). There's a lot of shit about Anno having an emotional crisis and it affecting the subtle direction of the show, but it sure as hell didn't affect the PLOT.

Anyway, if you want to say you didn't like NGE, that's your opinion; but you're just sounding like a complete gibbering moron when you claim that it's not interesting except for the last episode. It's an excellent anime over the entire run (except maybe that one clipshow-episode), and that's objective fact given it's critical and commercial acclaim, and staying power over 25 years.

>complete gibbering moron when you claim that it's not interesting except for the last episode

First of all, claiming I'm a gibbering moron is pointless other than to make yourself feel better about liking the series and to elevate yourself to a ""superior" status without any real reasoning. That's the most retarded thing you can do in an argument and does nothing expect cement your status at someone who's only concerned with sounding better than the other person.

I don't think Evangelion is absolute trash. Yeah, It's got some good direction and some nice characters and is a decent deconstruction of the genre of where it was at the time. But overall, it's not really special. The major thing going for it is the last 3-4 episodes where shit gets weird and psychological, and this is only because of the complete lack of a budget at this point. Shows and movies do that sort of crap all the time intentionally, and it's pretty obvious usually. They have 78 minutes of normal-ish movie, and then 12 minutes of deep introspective ART. If you ignore the ART episodes, you're still looking at am "okay" to "pretty good" deconstruction of the mecha genre depending on how you feel about the animation and characters. but the last few episodes are art school bullshit used a million times over for the writers to *directly fucking state* how they feel about human nature without worrying about how it fits into the story. I'm not saying this isn't interesting, but for a tv show this is absolute garbage to do. You can call it deep and emotional all you want, but what it really is is interesting and different from anything you've seen before. That's the reason people like it. Other shows have done this since NGE and they have been REAMED AND ASSHOLE for it because the endings were random and made no sense while refusing to tie up plot ends. I'm not saying liking NGE isn't allowed, but the only real reason it's popular is because it was *weird.* Interesting can be "good" in it's own right but it doesn't guarantee it's actually a solid show.

 No.748781

You just don't get it. I'm only calling you a moron because you are. You're trying to be the big man who is "too good" for NGE and spouting this nonsense about how the show was mediocre and only remembered or liked because of the ending being "different", as if that's the way it was. In reality, outside your hipster little delusions, it was the complete opposite: the show was very popular during its run, but the ending was hated so goddamn much that Anno got death threats. Yes, all that garbage happening cemented NGE in meme history, but it doesn't devalue the rest of the anime, and certainly doesn't rewrite the history of what ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

>Other shows have done this since NGE and they have been REAMED AND ASSHOLE for it

That's because those other shows weren't actually any good, where NGE was. That's the difference! That's why it was able to survive a complete collapse at its conclusion, which should have destroyed its fanbase entirely and that would have happened if the characters and plot weren't compelling enough to make people want more. That's why they were later handed a massive budget to make two movies to bring their storyboards to fruition.

The way you bandy about buzzword terms, like "deconstruction" and "ART" and "psychological", and speak of NGE with a vague and non-committal air makes it completely obvious that you're simply parroting what you've been TOLD. I can almost guarantee that you've never even watched it, or at most have seen a few episodes here and there. You aren't even getting the number of "weird" episodes correct, because you merely have been told that "the last few episodes" were the zero-budget ones. As a point of fact, that only applies to ep. 25/26; all the episodes before that point were normal. For the point where "shit gets weird and psychological", you'd have to go all the way back to like episode 16 where Shinji gets sucked into one of the Angels and has a lengthy discussion with himself as a child, and meets the soul of his mother.

Even shitty movie critics actually bother to watch the movies before talking about them.

The whole thing is obviously a sequel; 3.33 is just where shit goes completely off-the-rails and bears no resemblance to what happened in the last "cycle". Mostly because of Kaworu.

You know, right before he dies, Kaworu says, basically, "it's okay. we'll meet again". I've always interpreted this as breaking the fourth wall, as in: he's not talking to Shinji, but to the viewer, who will forever be trapped in their own "cycle" of rewatching NGE. In fact, everything Kaworu does is to try to deconstruct reality to make a happy ending for Shinji and thus the viewer, this time around, only to end up failing because Eva must always remain a mindfuck plot, and in response to his actions it mindfucks EVEN HARDER to prevent it from happening.

You're allowed to have your own opinion but... seriously? The manga was fantastic, and the way it's Gendo in the end in the hallway instead of Misato was my favorite part of the entire ending books. I mean come on, the motherfucker generates an AT field from adam in his hand. It's awesome.
