So I just watched this last night, and I didn't care for it. I like the design of the suit, the use of the folktale of Red Riding Hood, and Grace Omega, but it feels like something unmemorable. In particular the dilemma at the end did not affect me at all, for although I had hoped he would choose to "settle down" with her, his choice of and grief over killing her didn't impact me. I saw the choice befitting his character. From my perspective it is more in line with an ancient sense of warrior-ship, as odd as that may sound given the context. So what is /a/'s opinion?

 No.747949

My initial impression of it was similar to yours. Plus, I tend to despise anything that I think is trying too hard at being "intelectual". In trying to appear to be made for "smart people" sometimes creators get too artsy. And appearing smart of the sake of appearing smart is just pedantic.

But after seeing some analysis of Jin-Roh I came with therms with the fact that it seems unnecessarily convoluted only because it tried to convey the story in a very specific way. The whole paralel with red riding hood works both from the perspective of making the MC the bad wolf, but he can also be seen as red riding hood as well.

There's one particular youtuber who delivered the analysis very well, if I can find the video I'll come back and post it here.

I think that's the one, judjing from the begining of the video. Been some time seen I saw it.

It was one of the first animes I watched. I grew up in the kind of environment who thought manga and anime began and ended at sailor moon, and completely dismissed it. Then in one of my holidays with my aunt, who was in the habit of recording a shit ton of VHS, I watched something critics recommended. Ghost in the Shell, Perfect Blue and Jin Roh.

Of all those, Perfect Blue marked me the most. RIP Satoshi Kon. Jin Roh was definitely the one I didn't remember much, and in fact I haven't rewatched it even once since then.

 No.747961

I liked it, it was a slow burn (and on repeated views it can feel like a really slow burn), but once he reveals the girl YOU FELL INTO MY TRAP THAT WAS MAKING YOU BELIEVE I HAD FELL INTO YOUR TRAP, it gabe me a pleasant surprise.

Also, those uniforms still are one of the most iconic to me, though I may nitpick how can padded and thick clothes withstand something like a terrorist bomb with only minor concussions, but it isn't anything glaring. Him slowly hunting down the other guy was fantastic.

Same kind of situation here. A best friend that I used to have once showed me the way to a lot of great anime. We binge watched a lot of shows and movies that I had never seen before. Ghost in the Shell was one of them, and I really, really thought it was something amazing. Akira was another, but I got too stoned that time to remember any of it. Should probably get around to watching it "for the first time" again one of these days.

Anyway, for me it would be a pleasure to re-visit Ghost in the Shell again. Never watched Perfect Blue either but I might get on it based on your comment alone.

 No.748052

Watched it while drunk and passing out. Didn't really remember much other than him shooting up the chick he was dating. Seemed gay.

Watch everything Satoshi Kon has had a hand in, especially his original movies. They are some of the best in anime.

I sometimes wish I had been "introduced" to the good shit. I was introduced to anime by my dad who watched Gundam and Princess Mononoke which were nice, but he let me watch then when I was like 5 or 6, so I didn't think about it. Didn't get reintroduced to anime until my older sisters introduced me to shojo and fujoshi shit like Fruit's Basket when I was 12 (by which point my dad split up with my ma') and didn't discover /a/ until I was 20.

 No.748064

>>748055

Damn, you came in through the back end. The only "fujoshi" anime/manga I liked was Princess Jellyfish, and that hardly counts.

I was introduced through Vampire Hunter D, Voices of a Distant Star, Miyazaki/Takahata, CLAMP, Sailor Moon and the Cartoon Network spread, the latter being pretty average for people my age.

It is a good sign that you have remained uncorrupted from such shows at least.

Jin-Rou is slow, and i didn't feel like i got it before talking to somebody, who i strongly suspect had watched Pause and Select's video on it. Even after feeling like i get what it's really about, i can't say the plot, story, or characters are compelling to me. It's an audiovisual masterpiece, but for me, the praise ends there. Particularly some of the politics feels very redundant.

Yeah, I fucking hated it. There was nothing compelling about any of the characters, so there was no way a slow movie like that was going to hold up. The attempts at being intellectual made it all just feel like the director was just masturbating publicly. Fuck that.

What irritates me though is the action scenes are what people (especially /k/) continually try to sell the movie with, and you could pretty much remove them without changing the movie at all. A bait and switch was the most intelligent thing the director accomplished.

You've summarised Mamoru Oshii's entire MO. I really find it disgusting how this wanker is constantly praised and celebrated in the mainstream industry when he couldn't even put together a coherent story if his entire career depends on it.

The problem is that its intellectual aspiration/posturing didn't even faze me. Pic-related was what I thought when it tried to come off as profound.

>What irritates me though is the action scenes are what people (especially /k/) continually try to sell the movie with

There were only two action scenes of any import, and they were alright at best. The action scenes worked seamlessly with the metaphor of the Wolf Brigade being a wolf-pack and the conveyance of that was done well with the shots.

I think what would have made the series work is if it had been an OVA series that developed the characters more. The first one could center specifically on Jin-Roh and its duties and ending with the girl's suicide in the sewer. The second one would focus on establishing the fake sister and the main character. One thing that should contrast between the first and second movies is that you never see any of the faces of "Kerberos Panzer Cops" in the first, but in the second, it begins with the viewer looking through the eyes of Fuse, the main character, who stumbles to get up after the explosion and finally take of his mask where the viewer now has been detached from his view. The third movie would wrap up the rest of the move, where Fuse goes to save fake sister and kills the cops.

Yes, as the death of the fake sister would have had more impact.

>>he never watched The Red Spectacles or Stray Dog

No, I haven't as I'm not /jap/ but /a/, and I don't see their relevance to the specific story told in Jin-Roh. I like animation and the only animated stories typically come from Japan.

I first saw Laputa: Castle In The Sky (and possibly nausicaa) when I was a toddler. And I also vaguely remember another one which depressed me because the MC was getting beat up by some guys and NTR'd by the big bad.

The actual proper introduction was NGE, Akira, Ghost In The Shell and Legend of the Overfiend on sci-fi when I was a teenager.

I mean he was a beast in the end, that was the point his commander made. What really got me was how shocked he looked at the end, after he pulled the trigger. I think this was meant to parallel the opening scene, where he doesn't shoot the girl, and then later says he intended to shoot her, but didn't know why he didn't. I think it was the opposite here, he intended to not kill her but pulled the trigger unthinkingly. Destined to be a wolf to the end.

Urusei Yatsura and Patlabor are his best works, but they are seldom mentioned as Mamoru Oshii works. Honestly, though, they're good because of everyone but him. The first GitS, too, was decent, but only because of his animation team, which is the only place the movie really shines.

Same conclusion as you OP. I feel they could have done a lot more with the world they set up but wasted it on something a bit soft.

Gives us good material at least.

>Honestly, though, they're good because of everyone but him.

Exactly.

If there's anything positive I can say about his works, it's that at least knows how to surround himself with more competent people, and by the end of the day take sole credit for what is clearly a team effort.
