What kind of novels are you reading right now?

Which novel is your favorite so far and which would you want to see burning in a dumpster fire?

The one I'm currently reading is Kenkyo, Kenjitsu o Motto ni Ikite Orimasu. Just like all the other light and web novels that we are so very fond of, this one is also an isekai story. And like any other isekai story, normal person dies and gets reincarnated into a different world. Except in this case, rather than a game-like fantasy setting, she is instead reincarnated into a popular shoujo manga taking place in modern-day Japan as the ojou-sama villainess (Reika) who bullies and tried to get in the way of the manga's commoner protagonist's love with a rich boy nicknamed Emperor. Only to then face the retribution of the Emperor and his influence which causes not only her, but also her entire family to fall into ruin. As such, she does everything in her power to avoid and at least prepare for the end of the manga. Although it may seem relatively generic at first glance, what makes this series really shine is the gap-moe of our villainess protagonist, a cowardly, idiotic commoner that craves cheap snacks while putting in her best effort to keep an appearance of an elegant and graceful ojou-sama. Not only that, but a lot of the slice-of-life comedic monologues are highly reminiscent to the heretical spidery shenanigans of Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? minus the bullshit that happens later on in that novel.

Cute loli daughteru explores her hometown and learns how to not be a baka loli. She almost gets bullied to actual suicide because she had a horn growing out of her skull (because she is pureblood magic kin) and her teacher thought she was an evil witch kin. So she used her magic powers to break off her horn and she bled fucking everywhere only to be rescured moments before bleeding out. She gets saved by the local town priesthood and cries her heart out. Pic #1 from my post is from that scene

I just finished volume 5 of grimgar, it's being slowed down by official translators. I have a love/dislike relationship with grimgar I find it really engaging with nice worldbuilding but it suffers the re:zero problem of the main plot never getting resolved, addressed, or ever fucking moving forward. I call it the ME2 recruitment problem, ME2 starts off with you recruiting your team to fight the collectors little did you know that recruiting your team is 99% of the story and fighting the collectors is 1% of the story.

I REALLY want to know how they got transported to this world, when, if they can ever go back, etc but looking at the plot synopsis it looks like that doesn't happen for the next 5 books at more which is fucking ridiculous. Meandering and unfocused narratives seem to be a huge problem in light novels. At least grimgar gets the core stuff right with them being a bunch of vulnerable kids struggling their way through.

He had a pair of horns initially, but one was cut out as a punishment earlier when she was thrown out for some bullshit reasons along with her father by the community she was born into. So later she had only one because of that, and kept it hidden from strangers with her hair, because that would be some kind of mark of shame among her kin to have only one horn.

'Reika-sama' wasn't reincarnated, she possessed the body of the host girl that got in trouble for bullying her love rival. Is the translation still going? I have read it maybe a year ago. I never got the impression that Grimgar was ever going to address the isekai element, which I liked because as just a comfy/suffering/adventure story about living in an MMO logic world it works great.

Then I started reading the LN and now that I'm just starting vol.3 I'm kind of disappointed to see they are going to bring that up. I thought the whole "I try to remember but I can't so whatever" was a hint to the reader that you should just ignore that whole thing.

Are you reading the raws or the translation? I'm curious because it seems like the official translation is actually surprisingly good, although my only other experience was comparing the raws and yen press translation of Konosuba so I don't have much of a frame of reference.

 No.744038

>>744036

The translation.

It seems cruel not to solve/address it with them mentioning words from the other world and haru even having a flashback with a girl. There's no point to them being isekaid if it doesn't get addressed and them being magically unable to recall only makes me more interested though I guess it shifts focus of the story. But with the daybreakers wanting to learn how to revive people it seems a given that they'd be uncovering a ton of secrets especially with them entering another world in volume 5 with a strong hint of more worlds

I was reading some bloggers translation and now the official yen press translation that gets leaked. I wouldn't call the logic mmo logic so much as fleshed fantasy logic even the skills behave somewhat realistically with the blessings of the light God no longer working when they enter a dusk world and the dark spells getting a boost there's nothing very gamey about it you don't even get health or mana potions!

106 volumes in now, and i have a few things to say about the story.

I wish we got to see more of Reika-sama being an aristocrat and playing the game than we do. most the focus is on the benign shit she does, and the more commoner aspects. everyone thinks highly of her and discusses how she gets shit done and has a way with being an aristocrat, but we only get glimpses. In the setup, i was expecting it to be more like Overlord, where our lovable idiot Reika sasuga's her way to power by accident, and we get to see all the steps. Unfortunately, all those important steps are either skipped over or handled by her posse who bully people off screen (as discussed in one of the alt-perspective parts, i believe the girl with a name, boy with no name)

i dont hate it or anything, but it is quite honestly too banal to be terribly interesting. i think it could be really something if the author had some editorial oversight.

I like that the inept protagonist is inept across both her lives, and doesnt magically develop a super reverse harem because she is the MC. It actually handles her struggles with relationships pretty well and gets points in my book for her really acting like a love struck loser at times.

Now that I'm 25 chapters in, I gotta say my description of that last LN sucked balls. This LN, The Demon Lord's Urban Development, is a beautiful thing that needs to be shared with /a/. It manages to combine the best parts of Lazy Dungeon Master and hotsprings LNs with with what Dungeon Defense was supposed to be. It actually features building dungeons and doing shit, it has likeable lolis that are seen as MC's daughters for headpats, and it has hints of despair like you'd find in Overlord when a character realizes they just can't beat that fucking firepower without making the MC invincible by any stretch (in many ways, MC and his party is pretty much a glass cannon).

The story is about a /k/ommando who gets reincarnated as a Demon Lord without any of his old memories except the knowledge to build guns and the instinctual need to create lolis and give them headpats (his teacher starts spreading his name as "lolicell" among the other demonlords). The author releases relatively frequently (at least once or twice a week), and the writing/TL is actually pretty fucking good as well. Only thing that sucks balls are that his fanbase are largely anti-loli and just don't get it. Seriously, read this shit and wonder how you didn't find it sooner, anons. I promise you'll enjoy it.

Funnily enough, one of the Demon Lords is actually named Dantalion and he controls time. Definitely agree that that should have been one of the images, would have been delicious.

2nd volume is more SoL, but from what I've read of 3rd novel, they get back to work on the despair fairly quickly. It's actually a good balance for the most part. I hope more anons can enjoy this work for what it is (Moe overlord without exposition of every character and dungeon battles between monsters and /k/ommandos) while recognizing its shortcomings. I just hope that MC uses his gift from the battle to save his "parent."

Yeah, was a little upset about Morax. The author started out the volume with him as a pretty cool bro who liked to scheme, and made [Steel] Demon Lord out to be the 2 bit rapist, but it was disappointing to see the schemer turned into a standard rape villain. At least Viscosity might learn from his mistakes all things considered, and could even become friends with MC one day from the way the Creator left it off. Aura was definitely edgy that chapter, but I think it's painting out how the elf's the closest to a ruthless villain in its own sort of gap moe way. Sebas Wight was more edgy IMO, he just gets a pass for being edgy due to the shit he has to put up with/being best non-loli.

File: 941d1d72937780d⋯.jpg (824.3 KB, 1800x2572, 450:643, Rakuin_no_Monshou.jpg)

I've really been enjoying one called Rakuin no Monshou. It's a bit different from all the other LNs I've picked up in that the MC is not a reincarnated person with intact memories. This novel is set in a scifi-fantasy world where humanity was forced to leave earth several hundred years ago, but the new resources they found weren't compatible with the old technology. The new resources were dragons who were intelligent life, magic, and the like. However, humans found themselves facing scarcity soon after arriving; the planet didn't have enough ether source of magic to support both their and the dragons' use. After being forced to go to war with the dragons and conquering them and practicing eugenics to turn them into basically violent horses, humans started to split into different countries. Most countries looked for a king to protect them from danger, and practically all of them were constantly at war looking for land to grow enough food to eat.

The main character's life was torn down by one such war. His brother was conscripted to the front lines, and their side's defense fell through. The general in charge of the failed defense ordered his men to burn all of the friendly villages near the border in their retreat so as to starve the invading army and keep them from pushing too far. As it happens, the main character was from one such village and his family was caught in the fire. Having found himself an orphan in troubled times, the main character turned to a life of crime to support himself. He was naturally caught at some point, and was sentenced to become a gladiator for life. However, his face looked exactly like the country's only prince, and he was forced into a mask that was magically fused to him to hide that fact. Years later the noble who was in charge of his sentencing was the only witness of the actual prince's death, and he hatched a plot to replace that prince with one that would listen to his every order. Thus, the main character is bought back out of slavery and told he will become the prince's body double. However, the main character realizes at some point that the prince is clearly more than just on a vacation, and no one will be coming to replace him at some point. Thus, somehow a man seething with hatred for several higher ups in the country found himself in a position where his words carried the weight of royalty, and the only ones that know his real identity will find themselves hanged for their treasonous plot if he is ever exposed.

The writing is pretty good and so is the translation quality. I don't know how far the raws go, but we've been getting a volume a month for a while now. I've pretty much found myself looking forward to it every month for a while now. The characters and events are pretty memorable. All of the countries feel unique, and the politics going on are pretty interesting. If I had one complaint it is that the MC can seem a bit like a Marty Stew, but this series is far less guilty of that than others and MC can fuck up on occasion and people around him suffer for it. I definitely recommend giving this one a try.

 No.749515

konosuba. Probably babby's first LN, the anime was so good and another season is so unlikely it made me give in and start with the LNs. I do read books mind you but I just couldn't picture modern literature being good at all, and a japanese piece of media that isn't anime or pre-2007 vidya being good on top of that. I don't even mind the translations being shit, I've completed all chapters up to 4 and I'm reading the megumin side story, loving the nonstop chuuni service.

Last night I dreamed I was a crimson magic clansman and I guilt tripped Yunyun into kissing me on the cheek, then we held hands from her house to the school. It was a very lewd dream, it ended right when we arrived at school and exchanged looks with Megumin. I don't speak jap so my brain couldn't come up with a fitting crimson magic name, but I think my name in there was akatsuki, It was written on the outside pocket of my cloak.

The Chinks are kinda crazy, but I can't say I didn't like this one. Humanity got fucked over big time as they all started being thrown into an inter-dimensional meat grinder. But on the verge of total extinction, the last remnants of humanity find a way to send someone back in time, so they send the guy with the greatest potential for growth with all the collected knowledge they managed to scrape together.

It's pretty grim, but the fantastic elements are truly fantastic. MC is not very multifaceted, but it kind of fits his jaded veteran persona.

That power's always broken no exceptions, why not just pop someones jugular or use psycho bullets? In both the x-men and fantastic four they counteracted this at first with the pheonix and invisible woman just not being able to exert that much force but powerwankery shredded that.

 No.758381

>>758364

Psychokinesis is practically the stereotype of esper powers, everyone knows about it. You could easily put limits on it just like kuroko has teleportation weight and distance limits like you could only move objects with your mind a certain weight and distance, or have to be able to see what you're moving.

 No.758391

>>758364

Also, even Kuroko can already use her power to teleport objects inside people, so she technically should be able to instantly kill someone by just teleporting something inside someone's brain.

I think the way I'm thinking it could be explained is that the Psychokinesis user would only be able to move objects that they can see. So that eliminates popping someone's brain. And they could wear special magnification goggles that let them zoom in on individual atoms to be able to control the movements of atoms, but without that they would be limited to the classic usage of the power like moving real world objects around.

The thing about Kamachi is that if he wants to he can continue Index simply by creating a new villain. Time and again the biggest threat at the time to Touma has been defeated just for someone else to show up and fuck his attendance. Hell, Kamachi has done so more times than you can count on your hands.

This is a man(?) who has downright stated he would figuratively crash and burn if he stopped writing.

So chances are he won't finish To Aru anytime soon.

There are actually plenty of ways in which Touma's hero streak is deconstructed in New Testament.

He himself acts as he always does most of the time after a brief slump but the interesting part is how others, mainly the villains, act around and even use his selflessness.

And how he is willing to sacrifice his everyday peace and make a temporary enemy of Index to save someone else

The End of The Century Emperor is still the saviour of To Aru, of course.

 No.764191

>>764167

My problem with Touma is that there isn't a sense of urgency or devotion to what he protects like the other 2 protags. Accelerator's entire character arc was about redemption and relying on the girls he was mercilessly slaughtering before that, and Hamazura is a true love story. Touma is protecting a mooch that fell on his balcony and treats him like shit, so it's hard to feel like his cause is as genuine when he says he's doing something to protect Index's smile.

Index isn't really that much of a special case besides the fact she is rooming with Touma.

It's more like Touma has an almost pathological need to protect anybody whom is deemed to be in need of being "saved", Index being close at his side and often a target, and that's his real defining character trait. He isn't really doing this because seeing them smile ultimately makes him happy, he's doing it because that's what he does.

Which is why there are so many events that are orchestrated to induce someone that needs "saving" around him. It isn't helping Index that makes him Kamijou Touma, unlike Accelerator who protects Last Order or Hamazura who "protects" (for a rather loose meaning of protecting) the ITEM members. It's helping anybody (mostly girls) he meets. I said earlier it was an almost pathological need because he would have killed himself over it if objective best girl(s) hadn't convinced him otherwise

I've been reading Sevens before bed on my redscreened phone, web novel got finished back in February so it's actually a complete series. Unfortunately all the characters are Cow Tits RIP Aria's breasts my ass, best change they could've made for the female spear-chucker warrior from the WN-LN transition. DFC is best chest. The author's Japanese shit like Katanas/generic OP MC shit doesn't really start showing until about the end of the Beim arc, at which point you're 3/5ths of the way through the series. Haremshit started getting bad around chapter 12 out of 18, but they (Wai/Yomu) at least treated it semi-realistically and brought it back down a notch by chapter 14.

I'm getting bogged down with Chapter 14 because the authors have skipped over the boring parts and jumped straight to the important/fun parts in the past, but they aren't doing it this time. I don't really give a shit about all the little sub-territories and fiefdoms since the authors never put any serious effort into explaining the world/I only have a vague idea of everything's location in the Sevens universe through reading, so they really should have skipped like half the chapters in volume 14. Hope it doesn't proceed like this going forward to the end. I hate haremshit but at least they're semi-realistic in its treatment here so I can put up with it to an extent (Ludmilla aside, fuck that bitch that shit would never happen or slide in a real territory of Cartaffs' size).

I finally brought myself to binge the rest of the series instead of slowly finishing over the next few months. I have to say, the volumes from that point on jumped back and forth between wasted time and great- the last two volumes could have been combined, but that's another issue. This is definitely a must-read for any fan of "realistic harems" and who like a low-fantasy apocalypse setting. The ending was a bit of an ass-pull, but it was still enjoyable reading through it. The fact that the author teases at a greater plot but then pretty much says "well that's that and this is this" is great, probably one of my favorite parts. The epilogue/intermissions really show this as something other than the standard fantasy crap or OP MC. Sure, Celes shit was a bit of an edgefest, but the author showed tact and kept it all in order otherwise. The early volumes do drag a little, and it can be a little frustrating when you consider that this is a 18.5 volume read (intermissions/afterwards are pretty much half a chapter in their entirety) with each volume taking about 4-6 hours to finish as a fast reader, but if you enjoy tasteful comedy and fantasy settings, this really was good stuff. I laughed, I cried, my opinion of best girl changed through the series, and I don't think I've enjoyed a WN this much in a long time.

Would I go back and read the LN? No. Would I recommend reading Sevens Sequel? Fuck no, it's shit. This is something that I think anons should read though if they enjoy fantasy and comedy genres as well as MC growth (both literally and figuratively, you'll get it if you read it), even if they're like me and find harems in bad taste. You'll get to witness MC go from being a NEET who can't even wash himself into a young man capable of holding himself up/trusting in others, and you get to witness all the fun he has along the way both intentionally and unintentionally growing his harem as he overcomes his Social Anxiety/Agoraphobia. It's not a perfect world with perfect endings, it definitely needs more smut, but I think that's what makes this special in the dung heap that's been the last year of Light Novels/Web Novels coming out in droves. I'm gonna search out my next treasure from that dung heap over the next few weeks but I doubt I'll have much luck. I thought this was mediocre starting out, but now it's back to actual mediocre works while looking for something new and interesting that anons might not necessarily know much about!

 No.775489

I don't keep a list, but if I'm sticking to recent reads that I can recommend:

>Main Character Hides His Strength

I normally avoid anything with a title that has less effort put into it than what someone puts into figuring what they'll have for breakfast, but I'm glad I didn't with this one. It's one of the few web novels I've encountered where the main character isn't a teenager (or younger), actually acts his age and doesn't suffer giant personality shifts for the author's convenience. Not to say he's one-note, while he is bitter as shit, as the story progresses we're shown the nuances in his convictions. The second arc (Magical Academy) is rather dull though, feeling like a retread of the first. Thankfully it's not all that long, and the climax is decent whereupon it picks back up.

>Hunter of the Ruined World

Decent premise and characters, but there's something off making it less than the sum of its parts. Like it meanders between being slice of life, fleshing out its world and having an overarching story with impeccably bad timing. Still, it's early so it might have a payoff.

>About the Reckless Girl Who Kept Challenging a Reborn Man Like Me

Oneshot. Working class nobody dies of natural causes in his late twenties feeling unfulfilled. Enter the reincarnation, as he ponders how to change his life for the better and be a positive influence on those who surround him. Nothing really deep, it's mostly a cute/fluff read and the ending is rather plain and matter-of-fact. You could do much worse if you're looking for something to kill your time with.

Been reading this piece of shit. Just dropped it at chapter 90. The story is actually somewhat enjoyable even if it has no aim and the author can't decide if they want the world to be grimdark or light hearted.

That being said, the TL is a piece of shit who deserves to die in a fire. Raisingthedead wasn't perfect, but it was at least legible. These Estelion folks clearly picked up the series because they're fucking attention whores. Their translation is like a google translate meat grinder, and their editor sucks ass so bad he can't even fix shit while the "TL" insists it's "translating" shit by running it through google translate and fixing a word here or there with a Jap to English dictionary. It's fucking disgusting and they clearly are only translating it for attention. I wish they'd die in a fire so someone half way competent could pick it up, even if said person just did a machine TL with editing.

>Night Ranger

Chinese novel with DnD inspired setting; mc is a dual wielding rogue with a plan to kill half of their pantheon before the world ends, while still at level 5. It's fairly interesting, though very little character interaction of note as most are just kind of boring. Fights are quite good and the basis of DnD mechanics gives it a lot more stability than most other fantasy WN have.

>Death mage doesn't want to die a 4th time

Pretty good. Set up scenario where shit flows into the utter dumpster fire that the beginning of the novel is, with the various character-types building it all up. Suffers a little from the "Japanese MC builds utopia"-syndrome, but given that he is literally growing into a god who brainwashes all creatures which fall under his attribute, it does make some sense. Fights are so-so, the characters and harem is okay but not very developed. Honestly a shame that the mother died like 10 chapters in, because she would have been a really interesting limiter on the MC all things considered.

>Monster that Levels Up

Shit.

>The Amber Sword

The fights are a chore and the MC sucks.

This concept is intrinsically conflicting with dominant narrative trends in Japan, so you'll have a damn hard time finding anything like what you want; the shadow of D&D is stretches long and weighs heavy. The Chinese have tried some stories like that but the quality tends to be subpar, and the Korean writers are off doing their own thing anyway.

 No.782269

>femenist term

Lolwhat

If you're going to twist my arm and make me explain a joke, you autist, I'm using term "Power fantasy" (which i forgot to put a space between, sorry for that) as a synonym for isekai. I do this because there is a widespread theme in these stories of seemingly powerless or humble men, such as Otaku or gamers (to who me the primary audience can self insert), with powers or abilities that look weak at first becoming overwhelmingly powerful, to the point where they quickly outpace the people of the new world in skill or ability.

This in and of itself is not bad, per say, but tends to be used as an excuse to have a shitty, generic harem or paper thin story, focusing only on the massive destruction that the main cast is capable of. I understand how fine trends and symbols like these must be hard for you to keep track of, you sperg, but I'm sure if you read just a few more shitty webnovels you'll finally have enough examples to connect the dots yourself.

As far as the the words "Power Fantasy" go, they were selected because of the above focus on powerful main characters and a double entendre with regards to the fantasy setting that is common in isekai stories and the purpose of allowing nips to feel some power in their life amidst the crushing corporate lifestyle and general status of your average slant. No consideration at all was made for the screeching Bulldykes or their low test rapists in the modern feminist movement.

So, aspie, how is that? Joke sufficiently explained, or do I have to explain the practice of synonyms and word changes on Mongolian moving picture forums to you to (you see, I know your slow, so I'm explaining again that the last sentence there was a joke that's supposed to have me avoid explaining the last part in any more detail).

 No.782300

>>782258

I won't spoil too much if you're going to read it, I'll just say that it becomes bad in my mind because the author falls into the same trap as every other isekai authors, he makes the main character too powerful too quickly. It basically devolves into MC is now so fucking OP nobody can do anything to him (and not in an interesting way) and he gets a harem, i.e every fucking generic isekai. It kind of feels like marvel shit where the most interesting thing is the origin story, but they try to fast forward through it as fast as possible to get to that part where they fight generic bad man in order to get mcguffin.

I think isekai author's need to realize that while being OP is part of the fun, it quickly becomes a slog when the reader realizes that the protag is never in any danger, which is why I rate kumo and shield hero pretty highly, at least the heroes have a long journey to being OP.

It starts of as a nice story about "you don't need to be a hero for heroism", then it goes "Linkin Park EDGE 2000" then it tones it down and tries to build up to have a nice moment with rabbit family and all... but ruins it completely by bad attempts at (bad) jap comedy.

You don't even need to be that good at all of that (well being good at comedy is definitely something you have to be good at or else it falls flat). The author's just have to realize that conflict + tension = good. You instantly lose tension as soon as your character becomes a god, so you have to either work around this (Have other characters who are still potentially in danger) or else make sure your character never becomes OP or else delay it as long as possible.

My biggest issue with Chink novels is they suffer from "Korean-tier Chuuni syndrome." Characters either spend shit tons of time "cultivating" giving them large powerups from virtually nothing without the exposition featured in Jap novels (I think someone called it "Xioshit" or "Jianshit" one time to explain it), or they end up becoming Korean-style mass murdering edgefests.

>>782740

Typically that's what happens from my experiences. I like to think of the WNs as a rough draft, and the LNs as a more "final production." You get juicier morsels and more of the author's emotion in the WN, but the LN tends to be better writing.

Update: Chapter 216

I didn't think a pile of shit could get much worse, but now it's swapping between SoL and Gorefest in the most unimaginative way possible. Author-san clearly went off the deep end after leaving the Labyrinth, and it's only been getting worse from there. I knew from the moment Kumo got pride that it was going downhill and she'd probably become a godly character but I didn't realize she'd literally become god. At this point the "oh I'm weak" joke has worn off. It was fun when she was an itty bitty spider in the world's most dangerous labyrinth, but now it's devolved into "lol, no one can defeat these edgy characters so now we're gonna slaughter everything with these big plans for a plot I won't even give hints to even though what I'm gonna do is obvious as fuck because it's generic as fuck!"

Why do good novels have to be ruined by poor decisions midway through their progression?

Power creep is a hell of a drug. Authors need to stop being tempted to make their characters more powerful for the sake of it because then it just because mind numbingly boring. Or else they need to make their world and daily lives interesting enough to keep reading.

On the other hand, without escalation, how do you keep your story and readers engaged without eventually burning out?

 No.785737

>>785731

You gotta actually make the readers care about the characters, that way the powers and everything else is just fluff. If you dial up their power level to insane levels, the reader stops caring because there's no stakes involved or the stakes are too ridiculous it's hard for the reader to relate.

Taking shonen shit as an example, The most interesting characters were the ones who weren't necessarily that strong compared to the other OP as fuck characters and win despite their supposed weakness and have to actually use their powers effectively instead of just hot blooded determination and punch through everything.

Pic related. I figured it was taught in Elementary school, it's pretty essential in the music industry when holding a live concert to follow the story arc(s). There are conflicts other than "oh, that enemy is stronger than me, I must become an even stronger existence!" There's romance (doesn't work with Kumo but that's besides the point), the day-to-day struggle, drama, mystery, horror. A character developing over time alone is worth its weight in salt. You escalate, bring things down, have a bigger escalation, bring things down again. You have nonlinear power progression- power can be determined by things other than just stats and skills. Take Sevens for instance (about to spoil the plot of Sevens for you).

>MC is thrown out of his home/abandoned by his family

>MC has no experience in the real world

>MC must learn to survive on his own

>MC learns to survive on his own

>MC doesn't have enough friends to progress even though he can sort of survive at his current level of living

>MC takes the plunge to go somewhere new

>MC grows a little stronger, but the focus is on him making new friends/companions

>MC has to solve personal relationship issues with those companions

>MC learns to command and act as a true leader

>Plot points revealed, MC realizes how weak he actually is when his Imouto kicks his shit in/rapes all his companions figuratively, not literally

>MC finally has the talent and the companions to become a full-fledged adventurer, travels to the adventuring city to try and find a way to get around his own shortcommings

>MC mulls around in the Adventurer city, various plots occur that mostly involve MC cultivating as a person rather than just gaining power

>Of course he also gains power along the way, but he doesn't become ridiculous strong

>Loses something every time he gains power, forces him to reflect

>Climax is MC realizing that his skills as a leader were more necessary than his own personal power, finally overcomes his philophobia and realizes his companions aren't perfect either

I know not every novel can be an epic like Sevens, but if you can't find challenges to overcome that don't involve leveling up, you need to figure out a good end point for your novel. In Kumo, for instance, she could have left the Labyrinth before all the taboo bullshit, and figured out ways to communicate with the humans or enjoy life despite being a spider. The arc where she's a "divine beast" for the people is actually one of the best post-Labyrinth examples of a plot that doesn't need to just be getting stronger to kill the next bigger baddie, as we see Kumo begin to grow as a person. Getting her shit kicked in only improved that, and there was legitimately something going with the Demon King and her coming to terms. Then they ruined it again with the scifi bullshit and loli vampire who's only actions like a vampire are mimicking Shalltear in the most generic way possible. I mean for fuck's sake, the author just went on a volume-sized rant explaining the stupid blood slut when the Oni plot was both more enjoyable and shorter to boot.

I use balabolka and an ivona voice to turn my LN/WNs into audio books, it's super convenient when you listen to it on the bus I've finished Goblin Slayer (I'm skipping vol 4 since it's filler) and I'm currently listening to mishoku tensei.

Goblin Slayer is half-great, some of the japanese cliches seem really out of place and from an objective perspective he's not as clever as the story keeps claiming he is (especially when he pushes forward into danger instead of pulling back and assessing the situation). Under the water city and in the ogre dungeons I felt like there were pretty big fuckups he made that could've been easily fatal, even chasing after the goblin leader at the farm with just priestess was foolish (he almost died from it too). And I can't get over how this retard goes to dinner trying to shove food through his helmet visor, it's just impossible I know it's supposed to show how 'prepared' for an attack he is but there's no great risk in having a helm with a movable or detachable faceplate and there's no fucking way he doesn't get rotten food and drink every fucking where in that thing. And why the fuck wasn't he interested in a short sword that never dulls? Or a free fucking gate device?

Mushoku Tensei is something I love more than think is great, I'm getting a little WN/LN fatigue in that it feels like there's only at most a handful of events of note in each volume because they plan to push out volumes and volumes of this crap so they'll spend forever detailing an event of little consequence and then speed through shit you'd rather they spend more time on. I still enjoy the shit out of it and am in the middle of vol 6 of the WN, it's nice to know it ends too and doesn't drag on forever like Re;Zero which has mystery after unsolved mystery.

I need to update my balabolka dictionary though, when they use symbols or numbers or "H-h-hey" "hmm" it really fucks up the machine reading.

And that's the thing- not every novel needs to be some epic. There's some good manga out there like pic related that are good examples of how a story doesn't need to be endless. LNs can be long as fuck if they're interesting, but they still must eventually come to an end. If a LN isn't working towards one day having an end, it's probably going to eventually turn to shit one way or another. Good WN/LN writers realize this, and realize it's better to leave some plot points unfinished or give brief glimpses of the future in an epilogue than to continue on forever.

So far, the only novel I'm following (all the others completed) is Only Sense Online.

I like genderbender and the author is not even a little bit shy regarding putting the MC (a guy in a girl's body) in very 'good' situations.

The story per se is not good, but the game they're in is quite nicely done, really, with many ideas from Ragnarök Online and Tree of Savior within it.

In fact, I'm only reading for the tidbits and because I really want the author to create something in the lines of MC becoming a mother, or losing his head and becoming a girl due to long exposures in his female avatar, or actually marrying the childhood friend, or doing some outrageous lewd stuff.

A very weak point of it all is how the author gave the guy not only a girl's body, but also a girl's mind, with him saying stuff like "eh?", "fueh!" and "umu" - which kinda disqualifies the guy as being a de facto guy (kinda how they create a girl and call it a boy in the case of Traps, but while in this case it is Visual, in the LN it is Textual and reversed). And I also believe that, at some point, the Author fell in love with the MC character and is now "creating a story for his waifu", an often seen phenomenon.

Now, about the one you recommended, I'll check it out.

Don't disappoint me, Anon, I'm putting my faith on you.

I used to play Tree of Savior and it was a good game to some extent, very beautiful, but with many balancing problems. It was actually the first time I played a game of the kind seriously, but some things happened and whenever I read a manga/novel or watch an anime with this theme, painful, hard and embarrassing memories come back, now specially because you mentioned said game. I think I just can't read any "trapped in a game" stories anymore because of that, but I don't think I'm loosing much, as the vast majority of them are male power fantasies.

 No.787444

>>786099

So, I'm this anon here >>786097 and >>786104

I read it all as per your recommendation, and I have some things to say:

>1. It reads as if the author has anime production in mind, he clearly create the scenes and interactions like it was an anime. This may be good, or bad, I found it shallow.

>2. Which comes to my second point: this author is a horrible writer. He writes with a teen-level quality of dialogue and interactions.

>3. And also with the tired Asian power syndrome: the MC is vastly OP, everyone is envious of it, and is sure to demonstrate it, the girls all flock to him while they do that out of some sort of benevolent stockholm syndrome (they don't have motives nor drive, their actions are driven by the author's will).

>4. I really don't like the archetypes the author chose for any of the 4 girls. In fact, best girl to me, personality-wise is Dwarf Smith. Felsias got it going for her waaaaay to easy, cheaply too. But they're all good girls, hey, that's because

>5. The author is a fucking loser. You can see that the whole story is about his fantasies, specially when Aura killed the [Evil] guy. At that moment, it became as clear as water that the author has a pathetic worldview, he didn't even realised how similar [Evil]'s behaviour was from MC's, the only difference being that the MC's girls entered submission by the author's forces, not by MC's. The whole "soft feminist" thing (I know it wasn't intention, it's just the case that it's already part of this guy's worldview) was cringe too.

>6. The plot is not bad actually, and it's quite nice. I'm referring to the whole idea now of the Dungeons, Medals, Monsters, etc - not how the author managed and wrote them.

>7. Fuck off with the retarded Gun trivia, the super-ultra Orihalcom mega blaster things. No one cares.

>8. "It was like cheat". "That was a broken ability". Lazy writing all the time, specially because he has full control of all of that. Again I'm to emphasise how much of a bad writer the guy is. Dungeon Defense was a cringe edgefest, but at least the author knew how to write better.

Overall, it was likeable precisely due to the plot and due to the arc-based anime movement that gave it a sense of progression, and indeed the whole "urban development" thing is a must to contribute to the story's appeal.

It's readable, but as a delicious guilty pleasure and is not to be mistaken by something that hold its own as good. And when I say delicious, it's specially because I like incest, although the author doesn't know how to handle such device very well, he manages to deliver something.

Now,

>>786111

>>786112

That was insane. Since the whole Marcho [Rebirth] thing I thought that the MC was digging his own grave, specially because of the Fel stuff that happened earlier.

If [Time] doesn't do anything, and the author makes MC gets away with it, it will be just another bullshit in the list of crap so far. The [Dragon] guy will be quite angry as well, remember that he had explicit intentions of uniting MC and Stolas and even thought of getting them married.

Again, either this won't end up good (as it should) or the author is retarded.

Procell also lied to Rorono about the baby thing, will this get buried like that? And the Water Diva girl, how did she fell so easily for MC? That was imbecile as well, with cheap/no development other than she was so kind of dirty-minded tomboy with trusting problems inclined to such to begin with. Yasashi my ass.
