And here's the sleeper hit of the season, in glorious shit 3D.

As much as the camera panning was crap at times, it was still visually quite impressive, especially the end. Music is good too. And they probably blew most of the budget hiring the VAs.

Not that I browse /co/ or anything but from what I understand the Jewess creator of SU created the gems as gender less as well which just so happens to mean there all girls, so if your statement is right than we may literally see the Japanese do SU better than the west by taking out all the progressive shit and doing what they do best. I was wondering about that. They're all clearly designed to be girls but the doctor refers to the poison bitch with 「かれ」, and I noticed how the subs kept tiptoeing around using pronouns until they finally had to use a singular "they". It seems an odd choice for a Japanese show to make, especially when the designs aren't really androgynous at all.

I don't recall the plot drawing full attention to actual benis-related stuff though (same is also true of girl stuff), I mostly dropped out of this because it deviates way too much from the atmosphere and relations I liked at the beginning. >Are they girls or not?

They don't have a concept of gender. This is the whole point, and unlike SU where rock people default to an all female race of lesbians, HnK actually sticks to this concept of immortal, alien rock people. No romance, all the gems use masculine pronouns, they don't have any sexual organs or noticeable breasts, and what mannerisms of humanity they do have are mere echoes of a forgotten past.

Really the problem with voice casting is trying to keep things gender neutral as the gems already look more feminine overall (with exceptions that will appear over the series) with characters like Rutile riding the line. So adding a female VA to most of the gems just pushes people in that direction. Not that the voices don't match the personality though.

You seem knowledgeable so ill ask you: was the use of female pronouns in the first 20 something chapters a translator choice or was that that accurate to the source as after the TL switches they start using masculine nouns? Asking because I specifically remember one of the girls early on saying "our youngest sister" and I cant tell if the TL didn't give a shit and completely wrote whatever they wanted or if that was intended

>was the use of female pronouns in the first 20 something chapters a translator choice or was that that accurate to the source as after the TL switches they start using masculine nouns?

Been reading since chapter 1 and I don't recall the manga using any female pronouns. But translations have changed hands a couple of times so it's possible that if it was there, maybe one group decided to go with female. I don't read moon myself so I can't confirm what is most accurate but listening to the anime, and going off this indicator that was in the first chapter I assume that all gems use masculine "boku"/"ore" terms.

I wonder, did Steven universe steal the idea from this? It seems to close to be a coincidence.

This came out as a manga in 2012, SU pilot was released in 2013 and wiki says the idea first came in 2011.

They also say Rebecca Sugar is the first woman to independently bring a cartoon idea of her own or some shit.

No matter how you look at it, it seems like she came up with an idea in 2011, but gems weren't in it(wiki doesn't mention gems for the idea in 2011, only the MC). Then she looked to Japan to steal some good ideas from some unknown fringe manga nobody in the west will ever know anyways and found this. When the SU pilot came out in 2013 Houseki no Kuni was going for a year already.

She probably didn't expect it to get an anime 4-5 years after the fact.

What's funny is she is congratulated for how brave and original she is and shit for being a woman and coming up with SU, meanwhile from what I can see Houseki no Kuni's mangaka seems to be a woman as well. Pretty funny, ripping off another womans idea and being congratulated for it in the west, meanwhile in Japan it's no fucking big deal to be a woman mangaka.

Isn't this plagiarism? I haven't watched SU but if you check they have referenced "anime" in the show before, including things like Amigara fault by Junji Ito. References should be fine but if something of this order happened in the west it'd be sued to hell. We live in an age where books about wizards get sued for resembling Harry Potter too much, how the fuck can SU get away with this?

Though while this post is relevant, it might be too off topic from the anime itself. Sorry if this thread is not the right place for this.

Re-reading the translator note it's stated that individuals may vary so maybe Yellow Diamond is one of the exceptions. I honestly don't care much for the back and forth people have over pronouns so it's possible I just glaze over wording entirely.

>I use Tadd

What is Tadd?

>I honestly don't know how many people have TLED this thing

It's more a linear progression of translators. One group does it, they leave, and someone else picks it up. At one point we had a guy translating from the Russian scanlations.

The whole reveal about HnK's "antagonists" seem to fit as an explanation on the SU Gems' hatred for sentient organic life. In a way Hoseki no Kuni can be treated as a prequel to Steven Universe.

Bart and Diamond defeat the snail. It shrinks small and stops rampaging, However Photoshop is gone. People start thinking that the snail is her. Cinnamon suggest that Photoshop got absorbed into the snail shell, they manage to reassemble her. For some reason, Photoshop can understand the snail. The snail suggest that she goes underwater for research. Photoshop goes underwater with the snail. The snail made a deal with the moonmen, gets its partner back and fucks off. Photoshop looses her feet to the moonmen. The bones of the shell of the snails partner gets used for replacement legs for photoshop. She gets fast as fuck. However still sucks at combat. A bit of faffing about. It becomes winter... Fuck it, can't be bothered typing out any more. Long story short, Photoshop gets arms of gold and platinum that makes her OP as fuck.

There really isn't much to fiddle with. I would actually go and redo some animations and the camera movements on some scenes if I wanted to improve on this, but that again would be altering too much for a BD release. They still do that typical nip thing with

So knowing that they store memories in their body parts, will Phos start storing new memories in her replacement legs? Because once or if they find her old legs and reattach them, she would lose those new memories she's made and revert to old memories, at least partly. Just caught up. I feel a little disappointed about breaking my rule of never watching shitGI, but this one is actually not bad at all. However, I worry of the day where every show will be CGI.

Back to the topic at hand, I'd first like to discuss those butts: These butts are perfect. I can't remember the last time I've seen butts as nice as these, and let me tell you, they make a happy loli out of me. Especially when they're combined with flat chests, cute clothes and legs that stretch for days.

Second, the baka. Not only is she a baka with a fantastic butt, but she is also voiced by one of my favorite VAs (responsible for all the Kumiko noises of Hibike!Euphonium). This is why Phos is best girl.

Thirdly, I'd like to point out that my dick says these are girls and it's totally not gay to want to lewd them.

I keep telling you bakas there's nothing wrong with 3DCG when it's done right. With fitting designs and artstyle, good directing and a decent budget 3DCG can look great. Sadly, it's canon that they use male/neutral pronouns. It's even weirder that in the manga "king" is actually referred as "ruler", a more neutral adjective.

Sounds like forced SJW drama of "our show is progressive they are gender neutral, but god forbid we draw any of them masculine in any way they are all feminine but still "neutral" "

 No.756887

That's because they knew to design it to look good in both 3D and 2D, so those 2D parts don't look horribly out of place, and the way the lighting is rendered also helps a lot. It's not popular but Bubuki Buranki did the same thing, and I think there was another show that also did this.

I don't think the nips are that corrupted, at least not yet. I think it is just because these are meant to be weird genderless rocks/skeletons. Also I wouldn't judge based on any translations.  No.756928

There's absolutely fuck-all SJW about it. What it might well be however is jewing, because the male audience can have them be the girls that they fairly blatantly are, what with female body proportions, hairstyles and female voice actors, but the female audience can pretend that they are bishis and fawn over them pretending they are male. The supposed gender neutrality is plot relevant anyway.

Sensei's name is also kind of a word play, Kongou means Diamond or Adamantine, but it's also Japanese for Vajra. Which means both Diamond and Thunderbolt and it's a weapon that is irresistible and indestructable like Thunderbolt and Diamond.

It also means indestructable truth or some shit in Buddhism I really don't know. Also this:

>The vajra is a male polysemic symbol that represents many things for the tantrika. The vajra is representative of upaya (skilful means) whereas its companion tool, the bell which is a female symbol, denotes prajna (wisdom). Some deities are shown holding each the vajra and bell in separate hands, symbolizing the union of the forces of compassion and wisdom, respectively.

Maybe this is why Sensei clearly looks male while everyone else is feminine.

 No.757607

>>757601

There are a number of good reasons for watching it.

In addition to the cute butts, the rest of the design is good, from the iridescent "hair" of the gems, to the exotic Lunarians, to the solid backgrounds, there is a lot of good stuff to look at.

The quality designs are allowed to flourish because of the high quality of the animation. 3dcg is often a turn-off, but this is one of the cases of good 3dcg.

There is a little characterization, just enough to distinguish the various gems in personality in addition to form. Nothing to write home about, but not a void either.

The biggest appeal to me is probably the mystery/world building. It seems like there is a lot of stuff which we simply don't yet understand, and the veil behind which the answers lie gets pushed back just about every episode. Admittedly, world building tends to be my preferred part of almost every fictional work.

So, to sum it up in a less gushy way: if you want a show that is pretty to look at, with a solid world, and decent action and characters, then pick it up. If you need compelling characters, maybe don't.

 No.759583

Was Kemono Friends prescient? I think it might have woken up all the second-stringer companies who have generally have the talents and capability to deliver A-tier concepts with B-tier production, plus or minus brief strokes of brilliance.

Kadokawa took a huge leap when it gave Tatsuki and Studio Yaoyorozu just enough money to make "something", a product that wasn't even meant to be good since the project was considered dead in the water, but they pulled through to great success.

Now, Studio Orange makes their first ever exclusive production, handling the entire damn project to deliver Houseki no Kuni, a manga that hasn't seen astounding success, even thought it was published in Afternoon. Granted, the publication itself has been waning over the years (good! is far more popular, especially for adaptations), but it was still unlikely to ever be adapted without this decision. It's not wrong to say that Orange would have otherwise probably been contracted in to do 3D backwork on some shitty Isekai, in all likelihood.

If it means we get actually interesting things animated, maybe 3D slowly choking the medium to death wont be so bad after all. The age of starry-eyed innovators generating whole new ways to draw and alias left and right has long ended, as much as it hurts to admit. Webnovels, ONA, and even increasingly advanced 3D? Maybe they're introducing new blood, and maybe that'll turn out to be the best thing anyone could hope for. The dangers of the shambling corporates doesn't go away, ex-geniuses and retired innovators alike, but it does open new avenues. Put frankly, the standard 'Anime' medium is getting lethargic, riddled with precedent and tradition, the very same sorts that it didn't have when it was in it entered its most exciting stages. Those stages of exuberance and innovation are precisely the ones that got a lot of anons here hooked on gooktoons in the first place. They're that massive backlog most people have, or their favorite series ever (that ended over a decade ago), an endless well born from the hearts of up-and-coming animators and directors.

But, focusing on this very thread, what tradition does 3D Anime have? I mean, other than traditionally looking like shit, but 2D Anime looked like shit too before it hit critical mass, so why consider that to be set in stone?

Frankly, Houseki is damned beautiful when it tries to be, and Kemono Friends rises above its godawful animation. The two together prove that beauty isn't impossible, and that it isn't the only important factor at any given point in time. I'd go so far as to say that excessive focus on beauty may be to the detriment of everything else, and symptomatic of the issues current shiny-shiny but passionless Anime have. Looking at ONA, too, they eschew and mitigate a lot of typical animation considerations, delivering concepts that may otherwise have been dismissed as 'not cost efficient' or 'too risky', still typically within the 2D medium.

Maybe, just maybe, all of this together heralds the cutting edge of a whole new phenomenon, rather than just being evidence that typical Anime studios can't keep up with the sheer volume of fantastic source material being generated every month. This could be a whole new frontier, the gentle revolt that everyone's been waiting for. Whether it's been mere years in the making or whole decades of mourning, the hero to destined save Anime may have finally arrived, and if it has, it has beaten all of the odds. Regardless of if Kemono Friends was the conductor that got the train rolling or merely a cute passenger who hopped right aboard, I don't think "3D will save Anime!" is a sentence that anyone expected to read, ever.

In summary, post more gem butts. Don't do it for me, anons, do it for the future of Anime as we know it, and do it to help usher in the idyllic era of renewed passion and creativity we can only hope it will pursue.

The show would have been much more expensive if they had made it with traditional animation. This is the original promotional video they made for the release of the first volume. I'd actually say that 3D looks better in some ways than the 2D animation, most notably with the reflected light and the Lunarians. I'm not quite sure how expensive 3DCG really is anyway. Is it really only a cost-saver for things like cars and mechas, i.e. where they already use it in 2D anime? I think >>759583 is right that we're on the verge of seeing a lot more 3D, but that's only insofar is it can gain traction. 2D still sells more than CG, so until CG anime can be shown to make consistent profits, traditional anime will still dominate. Most importantly going forward though, is that CGI will only be getting cheaper, while the cost of skilled animators will inevitably rise as less and less people learn how to animate, so that over time the profit margins of CGI anime increase while those of 2D anime decrease. It will take a while, but eventually there will be a point where CGI dominates with traditional animation remaining niche. Whether we're going to have another boom like in the 80's and 90's however, depends more on Japan's economy than anything.

 No.759620

>He doesn't know.

Studio Orange doesn't have that sort of cash. What they do have is years of expertise and a solid source aesthetic to work with. Traditionally, 3D was considered more expensive, but that's quickly flipped on its head as relevant tools and production companies (like Orange itself) have streamlined the process. Stills are easy, it's making everything look as nice as the stills that breaks the bank.

Ignoring the explicit price-point of the work itself, the more important element is that Houseki no Kuni's anime adaption was done 100% in-house, something typically reserved for giants like KyoAni. Cutting out contractors and extra fees is a big part of why big studios only ever seem to get bigger.

>>759614

>Whether we're going to have another boom like in the 80's and 90's however, depends more on Japan's economy than anything.

This is a measured and reasonable assessment of the situation. At the same time, the romance would be a new set of college students approaching the medium with wonder.

There's something to be said for the gaping wound that was left in the Japanese culture as the West's social output devolved, too, but I hold hope that the creative minds hard at work on Syosetsu and NND will eventually prevail, not to mention neat manga like Houseki no Kuni that presents something entirely of their own even through more traditional channels. Manga publishers have a whole host of issues, but since the burden of production is both lighter and often only on one Mangaka, it's still a fairly healthy field.

I think it's also telling that when Frame Arms Girl turned out surprisingly popular It was surprising, right? 10k units sold per BD volume is certainly more than I was expecting the amount of 2D jumped a lot. Towards the end of that show there was a lot of traditional animation that in early episodes would have been 3D, and while I might be totally wrong I don't see that being what they planned from the start, so there's definitely a lack of confidence in 3D.

Maybe Polygon Pictures are truly incompetent and have fooled us all this time, and have been releasing shit that doesn't really represent the total potential of a full CGI tv show. Pretty sure it's safe to say that Houseki on Kuni and Infini-T (also from this season and not Polygon) look better than any of Polygon's tv series.

And if anyone doesn't think this is one of the best looking series this season then they're blinded by their own prejudice against CGI.

 No.759773

>>759753

>Do you have a source confirming that this is a cheap production?

You have to contextualize "cheap" with the general market. For a variety of reasons, this anime's level of production and consistency on its current budget would not be feasible with traditional 2D animation, and I feel that the general pricepoint may even be somewhere in the middle or lower end of this season's lineup.

For an easy to imagine example, Studio Orange is about 70 people. That's about the same as Bones, a studio worth 3 times as much on the market. Orange probably allocated nearly 50 people to producing this anime, since it's their first fully-controlled production, while Bones can have one or two projects at about the same time, about 35 for each or a similar 50-20 split. However, the only reason Bones can manage this is because on many projects it contracts out:

>Huge chunks of framing.

>Almost all of the background art.

>All of the finishing/QC.

>Significant portions of the tweening, too.

>Keyframes and fancy stills.

Eventually, Bones becomes as much a talent bureau and production checking company as an animation studio, accruing numerous fees and expenses in networking, contracting, and from hiring freelances. All in all, it's still cheaper than running 200 people on a project full-time, but you're being hit for that money either way. Meanwhile, Orange is doing it all in-house and with only their limited staff. That difference may give you a very surface level view of why it would be easier for Orange to do something as ambitious as Houseki on a "whim", while Bones might turn it down or ignore it outright.

Studio Orange is anomalous in a number of ways that haven't even been brought up yet, and I suspect the ludicrous things it's pulling off (seemingly) effortlessly is the product of advancements of technology (check the CGI conference's keynotes over the years, also everything ever done by Allegorithmic), new design concepts, or extremely high-quality personnel within the building. In their case, probably all of the above. It just so happens that those conditions being met spurred the generation of Anime as we know it, and that's part of why I think these recent turns of events could be indicative of future trends.

I just read up to the last chapter, let me see if I got this right.

The moonmen are the souls of humans. They are immoral and they want to die. Sensei is a robot that has the power to let moonmen die. However, for some yet unknown reason won't kill all the moonmen off. The part I don't understand is why do the moonmen want to destroy the gems and grind them into dust? It would seem way more efficient to try to get the gems to go to the moon and explain their situation to them. That is what got Photoshop to agree with them

The main cost of gems comes from their cut (unless they are incredibly rare). Also where it is from and thus what colour it is, affects prices. A nicely cute Euclase would go for around $400-500. But you could get something much less nice for like $20-100. I would recommend having a look on ebay.

I really liked how that standard power-up trope was actually legitimate for once. In your average shonen the MC just screams harder and harder until they can eventually do the magick thing and kill defeat the bad guy.

Here Phos actually had a psychological block, was terrified of the lunarians, and the nanomachines were following the subconscious instructions, hiding, staying quiet, until she eventually reached her breaking point and really put her mind to fighting back. Then she could control her body properly and cut the xenos up.

 No.762095

It was a wonderfully niche series, with an acquired charm and a great sense of mystery and worldbuilding. But you had to wait until it was served to you with bright colors and attention grabbing sounds before your low attention span allowed you to try it. And when you did hop on, you still couldn't muster up the cranial awareness to enjoy the story. No, it has to be delivered in brainlet sparkling color and music form.

 No.762101

>>762093

It literally was a willpower power up though. There was zero in story rationalization for her climactic sudden control of her arms.

>>762092

The gold/silver flows through cracks in her entire body, she can project them out of every orifice. When she gets shattered or damaged later on, it gives a bleeding effect. She loses her hair for the typical cliche female character progression through hair cutting, and she does it again when she gets her next head. Ties with >>762093 's incorrect assumption that the series doesn't follow tried and true cliches. It does.

 No.762114

>>762108

Except that's exactly what a cliche willpower power up is, suddenly getting brave at the exact moment it's needed. Later chapters have the inclusions take months or years to properly take effect, her roadblock for this event was completely emotional, just like the shonen series you're getting all contrarian about.

>>762093

I understand where you're coming from but >>762114 is right because psychological block/reaching breaking point = MC just screaming harder and harder

Her weird gold tentacle arms turning into a devastating asset that turns the tide = doing the magick thing

 No.762118

>>762114

Okay, but my point was rather that it made sense for her change of heart to have an actual effect, whereas in the typically executed cliche, shit just works. The gold was an inclusion from the moment it started going tentacles, and she was already controlling it to form the cube to hide in and the hands to cover her mouth, but it was her deeper desire to hide over the superficial desire to fight. When her desire to fight finally trumped her desire to hide, shit worked. And that's the thing, because in the cliche it's not an emotional block, it's that through emotion they overcome some vague magic threshold and they're suddenly another level stronger, unleash their true power or what have you.

 No.762121

>>762112

If you actually cared about the story, you'd yearn to squeeze out every last bit of it at any opportunity. Which is what a lot of anime introduced people do, they migrate to the manga as soon as they can, because they want the most out of the story. But you however aren't, the chapters aren't enough for you to contemplate for whatever reason, you need the colors and sounds like a child needs a book read to him. I didn't accuse you of hating the story, brush up on your reading comprehension. I'm putting you down for not having the attention span to get the most out of the story, stiffing discussion as a result.

And don't give me that crap about time constraints, 30 minute episodes spread out over multiple weeks don't take more time than reading up the series in half a day.

 No.762124

>>762118

It is what it is. Some series do the climactic willpower power up better than others, but the overall trope is the same. That it felt better than other series means the author succeeded in writing out the scene better.

What you're describing as the ideal is pretty ADHD too

>I could watch this extremely well done series in anime, where the great audiovisuals further enhance the experience and see it for the first time in the best possible form, then read the manga to get more content

>or I could binge read everything that's available in the manga, with the same story, okay art and no audio, because fuck me I can't wait for the next episode, and then be a dildo on my favorite Christmas sweater knitting forum dropping spoilers on every opportunity that presents itself, because I know the story for the next 30 episodes

But alas, if you prefer the second one, that's on you, just tone it down a bit on the unspoilered spoilers. Also this is a retarded thing to argue about, but we'll have a new thread for the next episode anyway.

Bullshit, I've read plenty of mango that eventually got an anime adaptation and I've had the decency to not spoil shit to people. When an anime adaptation comes out people here are polite enough to let the threads be mostly about the anime, using spoiler tags for stuff that will happen ahead. And I've also picked up plenty of anime that were based on mango and I had the patience to wait for the anime to end before picking up the mango, to not spoil myself, have more fun participating in the threads, and because the manga is usually better so I get to have fun twice in a more optimal order.

Obviously elitism is good and expected to a degree to maintain user quality, but this isn't the issue here. This isn't a F/SN sittuation where secondaries have had over 10 years to read the LN but actively chose not to, this is an anime about a not very well known manga, and a lot of people are learning about it through the anime, and like people explained before but you conveniently haven't addressed yet, after you pick up an anime, it's usually more fun to watch it until the end before picking up the manga. Are you so perfectly immaculate that you never watched an anime episode before reading the manga it's based on?

And just like elitism is important, so is behaving properly. Your dismissal of etiquette as something to be expected on reddit but not imageboards paints you as being pretty fucking new to me. Finally caught up with it, I can't believe how fantastic this series is. I've watched a few CG anime that were alright but this is the first time I actually love how the CG looks. It actually adss to the series' feel and looks fantastic, instead of just being bearable.

I think the Lunarians are pretty fantastic too. They faceless, mysterious, Non-character enemies, like Neuroi, Noise or Ceruleans for example, but their design is actually interesting and they have even seems threatening.

I almost wish there'd be a Musou or character-action game based on this series.
