It was edgy in a boring kind of way. Other than the fucking skull ship from a heavy metal album cover in the beginning, and one sided beat down at the end, I was really bored. I hope it at least goes over the top as it goes along. I didn't think it was possible to mess up Nazi's but Dies irae proved me wrong.

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play. I could only stomach the VN until the dream sequence, so the last third of the first episode is new to me. Compared to the original the anime is not that terrible. They cut out all the "overwriting", so you don't have to listen to an edgy teen going on about "muh everydays" for nearly an hour. The animation and art style are trash. The "blood song" was not bad, and it seems to be excellent compared to what the VN had. Also, senpai seems to be a cute autist, and that's nice.

The skipped over some of the introductory banter between Kasumi and Ren, which I felt was a mistake. They showed Kasumi's obnoxious, hyperactive side, but not the parts where she gets suddenly shocked or embarrassed, which are the parts that make her actually endearing. Those mostly happened when Ren was bantering at her, and they toned that down too, he comes off as more beta in this version. At least I feel they captured Himuro's character well enough. It's not too rushed (the major problem with the VN is that the author pads stuff out so it can take too long to read through stuff that could have been said in fewer words, in this regard the anime moving at a faster pace is a good thing mostly), but they did cut out some stuff, Ren's inner monologue as he watches Kasumi practice her kendo, that I feel should have been preserved somehow in the anime adaptation.
Instead of that awful episode 0 they could have just animated the VN's prologue at the beginning of this episode, and ended it with the guillotine scene. Which I don't think was handled as well as in the VN; why wasn't she all ghostly white when she appeared? I would have saved that scene for the end of the episode. Also, the part where Ren says he doesn't like knives they show a flashback there that gives a bit too much away in my opinion, they could have just shown a hand holding a bloody knife, without showing who was doing it, would have left it more ambiguous.
Overall a decent adaptation so far, nice seeing these characters animated with the great soundtrack from the VN, not really thinking this will hit all the heights the original did, hopefully it can avoid some of its pitfalls though.

It was really odd how swastikas were mostly absent from the VN in visual form, there's a certain swastika shaped magical symbol that's supposed to extend across the whole town but it's mostly only described in text. Also in the prologue of the VN there was a giant swastika in the sky absorbing human souls, but again described, not drawn. I was looking forward to seeing that animated, too.
Not really sure why they removed the swastikas though, Japan definitely doesn't have a prohibition against displaying them. Unless it's something to do with displaying swastikas in a WWII German context.

He does have a special power, he's cursed with foresight that allows him to perfectly know what's about to happen next. He foresaw every one of Bey's attacks, so was able to dodge them, though only by pushing his body to its limits. Though Bey wasn't fighting anywhere near his full power level in that battle.

I don't know if it's the writers fault, or if the problem lies with the source material, but they just can't hype up anything that happens in this show. They try to end every episode with a cliffhanger, yet they immediately diffuse all the pent up tension at the start of the next episode. And when something actually happens, it happens so suddenly you can't care. And what happened so far to begin with?
>muh everyday life with some asshole who beats the shit out of me
>suddenly ghostgirl
>then pedopriest
>then the secret organization Nazis Sans Swastikas starts some shit
>Spinne is kill
>asshole is here again
>everybody wants to sing Déja Vu , but nobody knows the lyrics
Most of the show is just exposition, and that is just boring. I fear that they will realize this when it's way too late, and try to cram everything into the last 2-3 episodes. Not to mention that the VN has multiple endings, and that gives them a good chance to fuck everything up even more.

There's some fun dialog when the characters are just talking with each other like pals, there's a few really nice dramatic highpoints. But yeah it's mostly battle, a lot of it is pretty fun but the author is a terrible overwriter and has a tendency to try and stuff too much into a climax to make it the most epic and over the top thing possible, when scaling things down and maybe not having three or four cataclysmic magic battles going on simultaneously, and just focusing on the one, would be better. Also too edgy for its own good, especially early on when the story feels all gloom and doom, it actually lightens up the further you get into it. I'm just starting Himuro's route now but I've read the other three and I can say it was worthwhile for me and the highpoints were good I doubt I'll reread it any time soon, not for a decade at least, because of how overwritten it was. Were I a slower reader I don't think I would have enjoyed it half as much as I did. The soundtrack at least is excellent.

I guess 'overwrite' is the wrong term, I wasn't referring to the quality of the prose, overall it's nice and can be quite good in places. I meant in terms of length, there are lots of unnecessary paragraphs, and even scenes, that could have been cut, that would have made the story flow more smoothly. And I think for a VN of this scale that it not be any more longer than it already has to be.
