Now big publishers and the like are notorious for squashing artistic vision, but the side you don't see is turning down about 90% of that 90% of garbage. That 9% still gets through, but it's unusual when things that are abysmal get through big gates.

Webcomics have a lower bar for entry. There's little to no filter of garbage, meaning you have to sift through more trash. (about ten times more) But at the same time there's no "higher ups" monkeying with the content.

Remember that contest where Mousou Telepathy ranked alongside a poorly drawn comic about a Japanese girl going to college in the US and being friends with a towelhead.

I think Japanese webcomics are probably on average slightly better than western webcomics, mostly due to them having slightly more of a pedigree but there's some really shit ones out there too, and that goes for most media. We just don't know about them because nobody bothers translating them and I doubt many of us go sifting through those sites that host amateur manga or LNs to see all the garbage that coexists with the handful of things that do stand out thanks to their quality.

Achewood was a solid webcomic, but it was very much a product of its time and its setting. Very mid-2000s malaise-filled California. Lots of fantastic wordplay, lots of interesting cultural points without getting way too political, and had a lot of great moments. It's a shame that Onstad went absolutely fucking mental and descended into terminal normalfaggotry after his wife left him and took the child.

Aside from that, comparing webcomic cultures between Japan and the West is kind of like comparing apples and oranges. As far as I can tell, the types of people that would be on perpetual shitty webcomicry in the West are usually stuck on making doujin material instead. The big difference is that the Jap artists generally have to personally sell their material and work hard at making a name for themselves under the scrutiny of thousands of Jap autists. Western webcomic artists just need to survive on gibs culture if that, lowering the overall quality immensely.

There's a veritable garbage dump worth of awful doujin works but most of it never sees followup material for years and years, simply because the artist has to be commercially and critically successful to some extent for at least a few conventions in a row. Compare that to lazy webcomic artists in the West who don't have to pay for anything other than basic hosting and don't have to care about criticism because blocking someone on the internet is easier than hearing it in person.

I'm not sure if I'm making myself clear at all, and this isn't exactly on topic for the thread, so a polite sage.

I understand and agree with the sentiment of not liking Shimizu, but I can also appreciate an author that doesn't just forget characters or pretend they stopped existing.

This is a daily webcomic where things happen super fast, I can live with a short side story about a side character moving on.

I understand and disagree with the sentiment of not liking Shimizu. Ultimately, he's a great caricature that fills a versatile role in the story. In most Shoujo-esque plotlines he'd be the main guy, and a lot of the animosity seems to be because of how ridiculously dense and generally normal he is, just like those guys.

Nobel didn't romanticize it at all, instead opting to show why he's actually pretty fucked in the head and generally incompatible with Nokolo. I think this sort of personality and the way he's been presented is entertaining, a more accurate mirror of a type of person in real life that rarely gets a reasonable and un-glamorous depiction.

In any case, now he's got a girl who actually likes him, and who he may like back, and he and her will inevitably run into Nokolo and Toda at the fire (probably along with Mana and her boytoy).

The natural extension of this would be one or more of the following:

>Contrast puppy love, rebound romance, and a slowly developing relationship.

>Reveal that Shimizu's date is either somehow defective like Shimizu, a duplicitous standard Shoujo protag type possibly.

>Reveal that Shimizu's date has great animosity and confusion over Nokolo because Shimizu accidentally stirs the pot.

>Nokolo happens upon Mana's internal turmoil over going with the other guy instead, rips up their relationship to be patched piece by piece. (Harem ending ho?)
