In episode one, he blocks a coin accelerated by Railgun. If his hand only worked on the powers themselves, he would have been pretty injured by the coin, assuming it was traveling above terminal velocity. When he fights the Fire Elemental, despite it burning well past the temperature of fucking MAGMA, he was able to punch it without being hurt by the convection that should have melted his arm off by the time it got near.
