The yugioh show (after season 0) was based of a card game that didn't seem to have set rules within the show, either breaking them or just making up new ones throughout the show. Given that, the plotholes/inconsistencies throughout the show, the over-reactions to the outcome of a trading card game which most of the time only even had the impact they did due to holographic battle arenas, and the strange dub edits, there was plenty of material for satire.
I've never seen SAO or its abridged series so I can't comment on it, but I imagine it improved the show for similar reasons.
