How much handwavium magic in the guise of science do you find acceptable in your Science Fiction RPGs?

What setting agnostic systems out there do you recommend for far future science fiction?

Why is the predominant Sci-fi settings all licensed works when medieval fantasy isn't?

I absolutely fucking hate Bioware/Blizzard style "the epic 100 hour coupon hunt for the 7 magic McGuffins, because you're the prophesised chosen one" non-writing and non-worldbuilding and how those companies specifically have helped wormed all that into science fiction, if that counts.

Some family members bought me this for Christmas because they Know I love learning languages and we watch Star Trek together a lot.

How outdated is it? Is there anything in it that's wrong now / been retconned or is it just missing things that have been added later? Publishing year for this supplemented version is 1992.

I prefer the Wh40k route where everything's handwavium. Space fantasy >>>>>> science fiction. Science is for nerds and extremely boring. What could be interesting would be a world that uses IRL magic systems like Enochian to attain sci-fi effects, not written as a parody, but a serious setting.

What's the difference? IRL magic systems start with a holistic explanation for everything, then get into details from there. Science starts with details of boring shit, then moves to just a slight bit more interesting stuff, then finally peters out as everyone shrugs their shoulders and goes "I dunno, maybe quantum particles or some shit"

Good 'old fashioned "Get touched with this green stuff and it's gonna mutate and burn like hell".

Rather annoyingly, I don't see many mechanics for random mutations or mutagenic exposure in Tabletop Games. Annoyingly, even TMNT&OS lacks it. And the other half of the time, they have all the undesirable outcomes as things you can roll.

I don't think I've seen a system where you're guaranteed to get something beneficial and then has you roll for a side effect.

What's your opinion on mutations as a gameplay element?

Pathfinder also has some stuff with mutations due to expanding Expedition to Barrier Peaks into an entire country giving plenty of places for comic book radiation to exist. Just search d20pfsrd for mutant and you'll find all sorts of stuff. The mutant creature template is most in line with what you're looking for, but there's player options that give mostly straight positives.

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/templates/mutant-creature-cr-1/

There's actually a PFS module that gives characters an arbitrary cosmetic mutation of their player's choice. Can't remember the name though.

There's also this bit from The Reed Richards Guide to Everything (a book for Marvel Super Heroes Adventure Game - SAGA Rules). I recommend tracking down a download for the book even if you have no interest in running the system purely for the often hilarious in-universe articles that serve as a framing device.

It should be considered as a *setting* element first. For example, in 40k it's obviously a thing. In most settings it's retarded.

Can somebody please explain to me the actual fucking purpose of ability scores?

Seriously. What is the point of having 18 strength if, I try to break a door, and roll a 1?

Or why bother having 20 charisma if I'm just gonna have to roll whenever I use it, and depending on what the dice lands on, I succeed or fail?

Ability scores seem inherently pointless. Change my mind.

Honestly, it'd be better if the score actually had a rank/description of feats achievable through the score. All 18 STR tells me is that I'm of the requirement to make it so that my enemies EXPLODE INTO GORE if I kill them by chance.

Ability scores don't really cover things like my build, muscle tone, if it affects my attractiveness, or if I can open the Jar of pickles. CHA is great as a determination of me being NOT the introvert- but I'm pretty sure the Necromancer afflicted with Taint, Vile Darkness, and 2e Necromancer Flaws Does not command a compelling personality to give him benefits as an undead or command them- the commands are mental and vary per undead in complexity- and It doesn't seem to cover, say if the necromancer is an introvert or otherwise hates verbal communication- or is a Dread Necromancer in the Forgotten realms who is an Ex-Wizard who traded in his/her Wizard levels through a ritual that changes them to the class- they'd still have their wizard ability scores, and the only thing they'd do is recalculate- so it really seems slightly off.

In the instance of being a mute in D&D- you can't actually cast anything with somantic components unless they're modified with silent spell metamagic, but there are some non speech creatures that have aracane spells prepared, though some have non-verbal means of communication.

Then there's abject results of ability drain not doing what they always do- where some effects may cause different results than default if they're reduced to 0.

The setting, the story, the goals and the challenges are always the easy part for me. I tend to design campaigns that are very "sandbox" in nature, with some basic ideas, a few specific challenges I'd like to give the players and a general progression of the world events as the campaign goes along. The only thing I always struggle with is making good combat scenarios.

So here I am, day dreaming at work, and the idea occurs to me that maybe I can use irl military training concepts as a basis for my combat scenarios (current and historical).

Anyone try this before? Any good resources out there for this stuff? I'm talking about community stuff that adapts these to tabletop or old manuals from history that lay out these basic concepts for drill instructors to train their troops. Any good books that detail the tactics used by squads in history?

>2nd Pic related, maps and details to get the imagination going.

This will be an Only War campaign, which is why I'm looking at more modern battles and tactics, but I'm also interested in historical, more traditional small unit tactics for the next Fantasy campaign I run.

I'm more interested in small skirmish type stuff you'd see in your typical group campaign, but large scale battle ideas are also important for communicating scale and scope in a story.

As a professional seafarer, I find that the ships and sailors used in gaming are bad

Very bad

Rather than cringe and ridicule, I thought I might put together a primer for Dms/Gms, game designers, and fantasy writers could use as a quick reference to get things right

I’m not trying to write an 800 page tome but something of a cook book to get the spirit and the flavor down

I’ve worked on everything from nuclear powered ships when I was in the navy to sailing ships as a volunteer

So what do you guys think?

KEK

I don't own the ship, I just work here.

The rate for cargo is calculated by factoring weight, volume, distance to travel and customs requirements. I believe a standard cargo container on this run costs about $15k to ship.

I don't think there's any dead bodies that have been shipped on this particular run but it's possible. I believe that quite a bit of narcotics make the run every trip but no one deals with me on that.

I can think of two ways to do an adventure on this ship. First could be "The Quest for the Missing Bolt" where a vital piece of equipment necessary for the safe operation of the ship is missing a crucial bolt. It's a non-standard thread pitch so you can't just throw another one in. The pressure is on while the Captain keeps calling for an update. You have to interact with the NPCs to see if they have any clues as to where it might have gone or how to get a replacement. The final battle is with the machine itself as you try to put the bolt in without cross threading it. It'll be an intense skills challenge while fending off impatient Mates eager to get the ship underway. The second could be some silly nonsense about Canadian pirates or something.

I've been running a dnd 5e campaign for my friends here in china that takes place during the Ming Dynasty.

While the west has tolken, canterberry tales, and whatever Appendix N material that the classic Gygaxian dnd is based on, china also has a very rich history of fantasy fiction such as Jouney to the West, Water Margin, the Classic of Tricks (骗经), and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Whenever I'm reading these there's always a great setup for an encounter in a campaign. There's poisoned yellow wine, magical chinese medicine, fornicating buddhist priests, clever battle maneuvers, bold tales of fighting monsters, etc. It's all already there in shenmo and wuxia fiction.

As students of chinese we are all familiar with these settings and themes and it goes pretty well. In our game, we had a monk that was secretly an alcohol-dependant rogue, who took on the disguise to solicit donations and sympathy. We traveled to the forest to rescue a fat fire-breathing hermit monk in the woods so he could make an NPC some of his famous hot-pot, and travelled to a town where shengshengs were being preyed on for their meat (which allows one to run faster if eaten) by a local medicine tycoon among other things. The setting fits so well with tabletop role-playing I want to write up a sourcebook and introduce this to my friends and others back home, and there's enough interest in the country nowadays in the US for an audience I think.

The problem I'm running into now is fitting this into 5e or another system. While I'm up for writing a short book that creates the setting, some monsters, and an adventure or two, but creating a whole new system would be a lot of work. The races have no map to Chinese mythology, the classes have a little connection but needs work (druids - daoist priests, paladins - fighting for a court, monk - typical wuxia wukong sort of thing, fighters/rangers - martial classes, warlocks - channeling ancestors Confucian-style?, etc.) The combat rules and spells seem OK, but messing around with the classes/races would be difficult.

So I want to know from you guys (especially since the other chan's tg won't let me post on the china ip range or behind by vpns) if you have any thoughts? Is there any ePost too long. Click here to view the full text.

I ran a campaign of Wulin for a good few sessions. The book is an absolute mess that didn't have an editor, or if it did a shit one. The book is like it was translated from chinese to french to english in google translate.

You have to basically study and decrypt the whole book. Rules for related things are spread throughout the book and you basically have to call an Ecumenical Council of you and your most Rules Lawyer players to figure out how the game works.

That said, if you can manage to do that, the mechanics work solidly for what it tries to do- but a single fight takes up a whole session or more if you play rules as written. The flavor behind all the mechanics is great, the wuxia setting in the book is great, but the game is a clusterfuck.

If I were to run another wuxia campaign, I would do Fate Core Blood Silk and Jade or Flying Swordsman or any other wuxia system.

Great ideas, terribly put together, difficult book to read, massive pain in the ass. My love for wuxia is what drove the campaign, and the rule sytem and book itself was more of a hindrance than anything.

Will answer questions about what it's actually like to run and play the system if anyone has any.

I'm looking to add to my collection of board games, but I'm not sure what to get, tell me your absolute favorite(s). I'm not exactly picky about what kind of game it is. I already have Betrayal, Pandemic, Specter Ops, Mysterium, Scythe, and Tales of Arabian Knights.

Crusaders: Thy Will Be Done.

Really nice eurogame. Really nice art, gameplay is alright with a bit of planning, too little player-player interaction for my taste but otherwise good.

Good question. From my understanding, they do not like the concept of TTS very much, since they consider the competition, but I will get to see them this Friday, so I will just drop the idea of offering some of their games as TTS DLC. Will also ask them where to get the English version, while I am at it.

You could try to combine them. After 3 turns of catan, you could play a turn of diplomacy to get some resources or cards to trade for development cars. Would get confusing if yo u kept jumping back and forth.

Hry /tg/, what game system would be best for playing alternative apocalypse scenarios? Like say if all the water that evaporates from earth goes away mysteriously, a small nation that gets such a thick an avalanche of rocks and dirt that they start running out of food and water to survive, aliens programing toys a mind of there own to systematically kill off all humans, a wizard that accidentally cause everyone in the 1st world to switch their geographic location with people in the 3rd world at random?

That's rocks fall everyone dies-tier apocalypse. How the fuck is humanity supposed to survive beyond the first month or two? You can't grow crops to make alcohol without water.

If it all evaporates, eventually it should return as rain, but if it's all just gone then the planet is fucked beyond saving. I think the complete lack of water in the atmosphere would fuck up the atmosphere and cause everything to just combust.

Discuss anything in relation to it such as cowboys, zombie wranglers, holstaurus, wendigos and things relating to North American mythology.

I've been looking through some games and I've been told about both Deadlands and Wild West Exodus but don't know much about them. I am interested in the cowboys setting.

the context of the comic makes it clear they were people, regardless of the eyes. But, yes.

That's what I was getting at.

Looks like deviantart low quality fetish fuel.

I ain't even that against TF shit. I quite like it now and again. Just not the rather low quality weird deviantart shit ala the classic "I want to turn into a girl's menstrual pad" zone. Though, honestly, I guess most of that's at least not usually forceful transformation of others into inanimate objects because they had the audacity to look at you.

Why'd this shit get posted? I can rationalize giving FATAL a try, given it's ridiculousness, but, this strikes me as guaranteed garbage not fit for even that.

Hey /tg/ i was thinking; why is there not any official FF tabletop game. It is perfect for it. It could have its own unique world amd job system. Some sort of cross between 5 and 7 jobs system.

How would you guys craft a setting for it and what wluld the crunch of it be like? Traditional DND stats or something else more unique.

Would there be secondary stats and skills?

I was thinking we could homebrew our own unofficial one as well. I found one online but it is just a 3rd edition copy paste

Pathfinder definitely works better for that I think, but I've only ever seen detailed homebrew for 5E, so maybe a 5E->PF conversion could work. Ultimately, it'd come down to captivating the players in a world that feels and looks like that of the game, so I'd probably sit down and read through the FFXIV wikia since its probably the most comprehensive for Creatures, people, societies, items, etc.

Hey /tg/,

Looking to present you with an idea that I want to chew on with you.

I had a few ideas for some custom guard armies and eventually it turned into an entire planet with three distinct armies populating the surface. This bloomed into a whole loregasm as I cant help but overthink things.

If you would, listen to the story of a planet with no grand history save to its inhabitants. A planet located close to the Cicatrix Maladict established as a hushed inquisitorial and administratum joint operation. This experimental Bait World knows only secret war in defense of the larger Imperium. This world is only know by is simple, yet apt, name.

Dis.
