Well, daydreaming is the same principle of dreaming but without the paralysis or hallucinations. If it helps you construct mental images then it can only be helpful, a lot of my thinking is done with daydreaming, which is just relaying your subconscious to the conscious for that idea to then be assessed, which is why you're not always in charge of your thoughts.
It also helps to have a dream journal to identify the patterns of your subconscious world and to then become aware of the differences in reality and dreams. A lot of the time, checking the time will be difficult or strange in dreams, also, running, particularly for me seems impossible in dreams.
