Dogs have a better read on strangers than humans do, whatever they're sensing (aura, attachments, whatever you want to call it) is present and real. If a dog hates a person on sight, you learn quick not to trust those people because experience will teach you the dogs are right, whatever they're picking up on.

The corollary to this that you learn is that most people who dislike dogs dislike them because dogs dislike those people. They're afraid of being found out, whether it's conscious or subconscious. Same reason burglars don't like home security systems.

Per furbabies, yeah, it's an overattachment and I don't like it either. My dog might be "like family", but that's in the sense that he's a coworker I've had for 13 years and we get along great and can chill whether we're on the clock or off it. He meditates with me and everything.

The cat/dog divide is telling in its own right too. People who fall one way or the other are imbalanced (masculine/feminine). They speak different languages but knowing both is good. Felines speak a language of service, canines speak a language of respect. Camaraderie calls upon both.

People are social creatures. Even extreme introverts and schizoids suffer physiologically from being alone too much. Your brain chemistry changes when you're alone too much. You become more stressed. You become prone to mental illness.

Dogs are also social creatures. They have a pack mentality, so they're intensely loyal. Because of this, they fulfill a psychological need in their owners.

I do think it's ridiculous when people talk about dogs like they're their kids, but not when they consider their dogs their family, because dogs do fulfill a familial role. They're comforting and accepting, and especially for lonely people who never succeed in building a family, dogs become the closest thing to family they have, pathetic though that may be.

I think that ethnic link is quite a stretch, but I agree with you that the purist fantasizing that people at every extreme make is colloquially "autistic." If a society has the wealth, it should provide basic services like healthcare and education to its citizens (socialism). However, it's also true that in communist countries, scientific progress slowed, indicating that you need competition and strong incentives (capitalism). It's true that people should have the freedom to do what they want with themselves, without input of people whom their choices don't affect (anarchism). At the same time, having a state to protect people's basic rights and relative safety is desirable to some extent (statism). As new problems in society arise, if the government has the capacity to help alleviate those issues then it should (progressivism). That said, our societies have done as well as they have because of sets of principles and values, and those should be preserved (conservatism). It's vital to counteract environmental destruction and preserve nature for the wellbeing of everyone (green politics), but infrastructure needs to expand to accommodate the booming world population (development). Ideologues without exception have little grasp of how the world actually operates, and when they gain power, they unfailingly allow for whatever death and destruction their ideology's failings cause, just for the autistic dream of their ideological utopia. It's pretty hideous.

Now watch all the ideologues come out and whine, explaining why their ideology is the right one.
